As a native of the Cincinnati area, and a former resident of Austin, Texas, I have a sizable place in my heart for both cities. So when the bands from my hometown are planning a trek to Austin for the best music festival in the world, my ears perk up. And that is exactly what is being planned this spring. A couple amazing acts from our neck of the woods, The Sundresses and Wussy, along with Lexington's Oh My Me are traveling from the Midwest all the way down to Austin and need your help with cash [...]

After a little over three years of serving as a home for live experimental music in Cincinnati, Northside's Art Damage Lodge will be closing its doors at the end December. As a way of saying goodbye (and to help fund the move), the organizers of the D.I.Y. space are planning a final farewell show and garage sale. Uncle Dave Lewis and Stare Case will perform on tonight and Ryan Jewell and the Gospel of Luthor the Geek will be there Saturday. Both shows start at 9pm and will feature many other acts. The garage sale will [...]

With CBC threatening to cancel the 5 PM airing of the Simpson, it only seems fitting that I run a Simpsons inspired "clip-show" style post trying to bring some shine to local artists. It's been an impressive year already and with Rich Aucoin, Jon McKiel and Ruth Minnikin all holding finished records in their respective vaults, we obviously aren't done yet. Obviously, record like Joel Plaskett , Classified and Jenn Grant would be standing high on this list, but if you are from Halifax and reading a music blog, chances are you already [...]
David Serby was a punk kid in Orange County and then an insurance adjuster in L.A. and took a long time and a lot of lumps to become the country singer he is now. He performs monthly at dark bars with old photos on the walls and he has just released his third album Honky Tonk And Vine . This interview by Chris Ziegler.

Ok, so here's the second edition of our Friday show roundup here at the hill. We've slowly been stocking it with some of the more interesting shows taking place in and around Halifax, but if you have something we should add, let us know. So what's on deck for this Victoria Day long weekend? Well tonight you'll find Gus' chock-a-block with raucous rock & roll as locals Myles Deck, the Cuban Assasins, and The Gideons will be joined by Ontarians Hot Kid (this Cambridge two-piece has a song on their new record named after our town, [...]

Lots of great releases to be had this week, with a few in particular that I personally recommend, which are Camera Obscura's My Maudlin Career , Cryptacize's Mythomania , and Pet Shop Boys' Yes . There are some excellent songs that standout on Camera Obscura's record, but I'm still not quite sure if I enjoy it from top to bottom. Though, I've been playing that Pet Shop Boys' release almost non stop since I listening to [...]
Patrick Michels Pikahsso & Tahiti of AwkQuarius made the most of the woodland setting last night at the Lodge for their bit as the warm-up act for comedian Paul Mooney.Mooney was in town to film a... Continue reading "Picture Show: Paul Mooney at the Lodge" >

Not that I'm feeling lazy and not wanting to write my own post, but how could I possibly write a better comment than what the Lodge 's record label/management describes: "With member of Inbreds , Thrush Hermit and the Super Friendz , the Lodge is kind of like the Velvet Revolver of Halifax Pop...minus the bad music and leather pants." It understand what it means. I'd go for this East Coast pop sensibility over Velvet Revolver anyday. Their album, Take That Devil is out [...]

Santigold and the Sounds to return to the Twin Cities, Big Quarters announce CD release show & Sick of Sarah @ Hot Topic.

myspace Right now, hundreds of angry bloggers are collectively losing their shit because the hype machine is only posting the Top 100 blogs on the front page of the site. There are screams for equality and demands for a revolution. In reality, most of the people that visit herohill from hypem.com stay for exactly one second... just long enough to download the track and move on, so while we might miss the traffic, I don't think we'd lose any of our audience. It's no secret that 95% of the shit we post on is [...]

After last week, if my name were Mike and/or Michael, I'd be running out to buy myself a sleep mask. After seeing Michael Scott rock one on Thursday, and then seeing Mike O'Neill rock out while rocking one on Friday, I think it's pretty clear that all the Mike's are doing it! Well perhaps not all, but some. Or two. Anyway, the Ack and I braved a rainy Friday night to check out a fine Gus' Pub lineup consisting of Hamilton's Cam Malcolm and The Owls , Halifax's [...]

Sometimes you just need to kick back listen to some plain old Rock'n roll. One of the bands that deliveres such a thing at the moment is The Lodge from England. These four songs have been my favorites the last two weeks. The Lodge - All Wrong (mp3) The Lodge - Piece of Cake (mp3) The Lodge - Slapback (mp3) The Lodge - Lemonade (demo - mp3) [...]
