Rating: 4 out of 5 stars It's been almost three entire years since we've heard anything new from Northern Portrait , but this four song affair will make us forgive the gap between releases, as this is some of the most accomplished music the band has crafted to date. The Pretty Decent Swimmers EP may only be a short little stop gap until a full-length comes our way, but fans old and new will surely find solace in the well-manicured pop of these Danes. [...]

"Stefan Zweig'in [...]

In this special, Friday edition: The Wiggles get Rewiggled , discover Analog Rebellion, and we resume our Blogophilia re-posts with Volume 18. Rewiggled? If you've had a child in the past twenty years (or if you've been one in the last twenty), it's hard not to go by a bowl of fruit salad and proclaim it as yummy, yummy. Thanks to the Disney Channel, The Wiggles have left an indelible mark on children worldwide. It's hard to believe this Aussie act is 20 [...]

The Phil Spector -penned / Ronettes -performed “Be My Baby” intro is probably the most iconic drum beat in pop music history and we here at Music For Kids Who Can't Read Good can't get enough of that classic "Boom! Boom boom, cha!". This spring I posted two mixes with about 40 songs worth of "Be My Baby" drum beats and since then I've been hearing it everywhere (twee-poppers and lo-fi bands like Waaves and Best Coast seem to have a particular affinity for the beat). For version 3.0 of this mix, I've [...]

Flashbacks is The Lodger's third album and was recently released here in the U.S. The Lodger is essentially born out of lead-guitarist/singer Ben Siddall's solo bedroom demos and the name of the band is borne from his accomodations as of that era. I have to admit I have not heard any of the prior albums or EPs from this band so I hit this album completely fresh. There are a few parts in here to like, and there are a few things that the group does well and with some style, but in a larger sense [...]

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars San Francisco of late hasn't really offered up a lot of genuine pop records, instead it has a great deal of bands weirding out if you will. That is until you hear the delightful sounds coming from the self-titled album by Magic Bullets. There's a lot of obvious influences that you'll hear on this, their second album, but regardless of where they're coming from, the group is sure to be up for good things in the future. It's hard to tell [...]

Pop music formed by '60s girl groups are often subjected to ancient stereotypes. Joyous harmonies, lyrics consisting of nothing more than multiply layered “doo-wop-da-doo-wop”s, and a subtle sway of the hips for sex appeal (or the most of what was allowed of it on TV at the time). While much of what was considered [...]

Given the volume of music available for consideration on One Track Mind, we invariably have to pass on a lot of tasty morsels. [tweetmeme] In a desire to share even more great, free music with you, the Sunday Sampler will offer a handful of tracks without the usual critical and biographical write-up. Less talk, more tunes: Blackmarket "Tongue Twister Typo" from St Vincent Décor [released 4/20 | indie rock] [ download ] [...]
Leeds trio the Lodger released its third full-length, Flashbacks, last month via Slumberland Records. For this project, the band enlisted the help of former Spaceman 3 guitarist Richard Formby, fresh off the success of Wild Beasts’ Two Dancers. Check out the album’s opening track, “The Back Of My Mind." It has a trippy vocal echo over [...]
We have another batch of recent singles we dig from 2010 releases that we haven't had the chance to share with all of you before. This happens a lot because there's way too much good music.
