Christmas music is not just nor even mostly Broadway show tunes and pop hits like the ones I've been sharing. First and foremost, Christmas music is carols and what we usually call classical musical. Classical Christmas music goes back far - very far - and I'll be sharing some of that music in the weeks to come, but the most well-known Christmas classical these days is surely... The Nutcracker (Russian: Щелкунчик, Schelkunchik) is a two-act ballet, originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and [...]

Artist: John Williams (Composer) Album: Star Wars: A New Hope - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Released: 1977 (Re-released 1997) For the record, I listened to the 1997 re-release of the album which coincided with the Special Edition release of the films, which happened to mark the first time ever saw the Star Wars films on a big screen. Kind of a big deal for 9-year-old me (I promise this is the last time I make the majority of my readers feel old for at least [...]

Photos by Anika Mottershaw I had never seen a stage so cluttered as that of the Barbican on the night the London Symphony Orchestra and Grizzly Bear collaborated. Before laying my eyes on the stage it hadn't quite computed with me that we would be seeing the full orchestra on show. I had expected a stripped down affair, similar to Grizzly Bear's performance with a string quartet on Letterman earlier this year. I was in for a lot more than I had bargained [...]
Here's some things to know about October 31, 2009: This day will again serve as the date of Halloween. Halloween falls on a Saturday this year. Among the events taking place during on this evening, besides trick-or-treating of course, will be a one-off performance by Grizzly Bear at the Barbican Centre in London, England. This particular performance will reportedly feature the Brooklyn outfit teaming up with the London Symphony Orchestra . Nico Muhly , the American classical composer who collaborated with the band Veckatimest , may also be taking part (via Drowned [...]
With just the right bells and whistles, stomps and fanfare, violins and flutes, New York born composer John Williams is notorious for saving films left and right. What would the opening credits to Star Wars be like without the rushing theme to keep us interested? How else would we know Jurassic Park was supposed to be both magnificent and mysterious at the same time? Would Elliot's flight into the stars with E.T. be very memorable? Hell, would either George Lucas or Steven Spielberg have a career? Don't answer. These are all rhetorical. In fact, all these [...]

...but he didn't - Roger Waters did. Of course, I'm talking about the London Symphony Orchestra's fantastic arrangement of Another Brick In The Wall. I know some of you will be reluctant to have the London Symphony Orchestra on your iPod or whatever music listening thingy you have ( that's almost verging on... liking classical music! Shock horror! ) - but trust my judgement. You'll like it. I was flicking through my record collection last night when I came across [...]

Happy 10 week anniversary Thirsty Thursdays, on to the random assortment of songs. To celebrate the release of The White Stripes ' new album, " Icky Thump ", I'm gonna share the very first thing this Detroit rock duo ever released. Prized by collectors, the "Let's Shake Hands" 7" was released back in 1998 with only 1000 copies pressed. It was re-issued in 2002 with another 1000 pressings. The song is great. It's loud, noisy and fast. With this very first peice of vinyl, they brought forth their combination of rough rock and raw blues [...]

There's quite a bit going on in Nashville this weekend, as usual. I'm particularly looking forward to the weekend, mostly because it will be our one-year wedding anniversary! HOORAY FOR US. Other than that, a ton of concerts and extra interesting things are going on all around town. Obviously, I have to plug my event first. Come out on Saturday evening (or the morning, if you want to bring the kids) to see the Nashville Chamber Orchestra perform in the new Schermerhorn Symphony Center . I'll be playing with the NCO on Beethoven's 5th Symphony. [...]
