When we last visited the Vancouver, BC garage scene the Dead Ghosts had just released their self-titled debut album that hinted at country and rockabilly but was mostly straight ahead garage. Indian Wars have just released their own debut and have upped the ante in the country garage sweepstakes. Sounding like a less paisley, more cactus and tumbleweeds Long Ryders these cowboys from British Columbia gallop through 13 songs on their debut entitled Walk Around the Park. It's a dusty stampede of a record that will either have you replacing [...]

By Rube Ambler Stealing without attribution is plagiarism. Stealing with attribution is citation. We like to think we're doin' the latter. Specifically we like to think it's the repetition of a great idea, which we completely lifted it from Paste Magazine's Josh Jackson, but like Mr. Jackson we're only going to list those shows where we can [...]

Last week while I was listening to Kevin Cole on KEXP he played a song from Purrs ' new album followed by the Dream Syndicate 's Tell Me When It's Over which reminded me of a couple things. One, how much I love Kevin Cole's kid in a candy store approach to his daily show (you never know what he might grab off the shelf) and two: how much the Purrs seem to be influenced by the Paisley Underground. About a year ago when I saw them across the street from the Green [...]
Ahhh, so here we go again, still stuck in the 80's. These posts are a relief for me, especially since I get away from posting about personal issues. I can't say it enough but I love the 80's. Always do and always will. Remember, 1981 is the date that these bands were formed. The tracks posted can be a couple of years after that date. Also, this selection is in no way a comprehensive list of bands that were formed in 1981. I am sure that I am missing some important bands. But, this is the [...]

Every so often I'll do a mammoth vinyl session. This involves going through each and every album and single, fondling the covers, ogling the artwork, sniffing the insides and scrutinising the sleevenotes. It's an event, I tell you. And quietly amazing. How much work did people put into these packages? Partly inspired by XO's post on the brilliant Music On Vinyl , here are a few from my collection. 4000 Annees d'Horreur - Etienne Daho (zShare) 1986 [...]
Slave to What? Jimmy Morbid? I don't think so? When it's 2:30 I am asleep and not trolling around the internet looking for those "pictures" of Audrina Partridge or trying figure out if getting Vicodin from that "onilne Pharmacy" excuse me "O** N(()) Line Ph@rm@cy" is jut a front for the Man? So while Jimmy is getting all faux NYXHC on you, Rinjo brings you the tunes that just might get you to go out and buy the album. After all it's Christmas... Song: Starting Over Artist: Shift Album: Get In [...]

One of the best from the 80s underground, right up there with top albums by the Dream Syndicate, the Wipers, the Meat Puppets, the Minutemen and the Replacements. The Long Ryders had more of a genuine 60s sound though and this record, Native Sons, was their first album (not counting their debut ep, 10-5-60). This group hailed from Los Angeles California and was led by Kentucky native Sid Griffin, a man well versed in the history of rock n roll. Griffin headed out to LA when he heard about the city's thriving punk scene. Over time [...]

[ purchase ] The Long Ryders: I Had A Dream The Long Ryders proudly wore their influences on their sleeve. 1984's Native Sons LP helped bridge the gap between The Byrds/Burritos and Uncle Tupelo and the cover photograph is actually an homage to Buffalo Springfield's unissued Stampede album ( jpg ). Includes a great cover track on Mel Tillis' Sweet Mental Revenge, an early cowpunk number in its own right. Also, Gene Clark sings on Ivory Tower, and that's saying a lot. [...]

Ok, let's keep it going. This one here is bands that were born in the year 1981.
