"Impossible" by Pleasant Grove is off of their 2004 release The Art of Leaving. I was recently introduced to this band through the magic of a Myspace friend request. Pleasant Grove play what I like to call space roots rock: where classic roots music is augmented with atmospherics and bleeps. Pleasant Grove - Impossible.mp3 Off of the 2003 release, Mouthfuls, comes "A Bit of Wind" by the Fruit Bats. Fruit Bats - [...]

I was in Borders the other day to pick up the new Mental Floss for my wife when I noticed the new Believer. Of course, it isn’t that new, since it’s the June/July issue. New to me. Comes with a CD. Which was what inspired me to write this post loosely based around Dave Eggers. A novelist, an editor, a father, a mentor to high school writers in the Bay area, an all-around cool guy (as far as I can tell). Check out his Wikipedia . [...]
So, I've been putting this off. Mainly because I'm kind of over lists right now and they're completely meaningless. If you read MOKB regularly, you know what I like, so why is it so important to rank them? Because that's what bloggers do. We rank and analyze and report, then you tell us how stupid we are. I love that part actually. Anyway, I know I have access. More than most, so I might have heard things you haven't or that aren't out yet, I apologize if it bothers you that I [...]
Over the last two years, The Long Winters have quickly become one of my all-time favorite groups. If possible, I could sit for hours talking with frontman John Roderick about his songs and the ingredients that make these records truly incredible. Through a series of e-mail exchanges, Roderick has answered some highly specific questions concerning lyrics off the new record. Putting the Days to Bed will be [...]

The Long Winters are long overdue for an overhaul on the 'hive. They were one of the first five original posts, back when we were just so excited to be live, sharing music that we loved, we'd post a micro-review of the band, and move on to the next one. So more background on The Long Winters: it's the brainchild of John Roderick along with a revolving cast of musicians. Roderick's an Alaskan native living in Seattle, so there's lots of talent to tap up there. Producer Chris Walla and Ken Stringfellow (The Posies) are among the many who have [...]
