For tomorrow's day party, it's time to move on into Brooklyn. NYC Taper is throwing a wonderful showcase at Bruar Falls. I like this group of bands a lot because none of them are really very flashy or buzzy or play Todd P venues or are necessarily very hip, that sort of thing. But they're all really, really solid bands and worthy of hype. A very well put-together show, if you ask me. Highlights include Kittens Ablaze, Motel Motel, Peasant, and The Loom, all of whom I've posted mp3s from here before. In honor of the really amazing rendition of [...]
We're having another party at Red Star Bar on Friday with The Music Slut. It's going to be pretty killer yo. We got Pow Wow, The Loom, Holler Wild Rose, and Lemming Malloy playing. BSC contributor and Radio America frontman Tom Stuart will be on the decks. We also have a Stoli open bar from 10-11PM! Yeah, that's right VODKA, no light beer or malt liquor this time around. So it's Friday night and

I've been told that using various means, Cortelyou Rd's liberal cafe Vox Pop has raised enough money to stay afloat; it should now be able to pay its outstanding fines and bills, and resume the sale of edibles and drinkables. Here are some pictures from a benefit show Kensington's The Loom put together, along with their friends Holler, Wild Rose! , who came all the way from New Jersey, and whose song you should listen to after the jump if you haven't already. Download " Song for the Winter Sun [...]

Owing to "lack of management" and some harsh health regulation fines , Cortelyou Rd's liberal cafe, Vox Pop , has been unable to sell any food or beverages, and hence unable to make money for the outstanding bills and fines. From what I hear, there's about $18,000 more they need to raise, and that if they don't raise it by the midnight of Sunday, it'll have to shut down (they've hired a proper manager since, though she remains unpaid). The cafe was co-founded by Sander Hicks, who also started Soft Skull press as a [...]

I am so excited that it's Friday. I'm also excited for all of the cool little shows going on this weekend. I'm definitely going to attend the Boogie Boarder/Real Estate show tomorrow night, but I posted about it yesterday and am sorry that I won't be able to see this show. Creaky Boards are one of my favorite little Brooklyn-bands-that-could. I first connected with them through Saturday Looks Good To Me . Andrew Hoepfner, who plays in that band, is also in about every other band in New York, including Shilpa Ray and Her Happy [...]
Kid You'll Move Mountains take a break from touring to deliver their latest album Loomings

" The Loom kick out glow-in-the-dark folk wailers that flirt with the anthemic, but never abandon the quiet spaces they were born in." -- David Bevan, RCRD LBL "With banjos, accordions, and considerable melodrama—their word, not mine—the Brooklyn band harks back to the early days, when big beards and plaid shirts symbolized austere living, not outer-borough bohemianism." -- Kenneth Partridge, The Deli Magazine Brooklyn acoustic folk sextet The Loom has harnessed the emotional power and beauty of ensemble vocals and chiming instruments since 2006, drawing large crowds [...]

Download " Don't Haunt This Place " | I went to Pianos camera-less last night with the intention of being "off duty" but here I am, posting a few re-colored cellphone pictures and a summary. It was The Loom's last residency show at the venue (new material's sounding great and showing signs of a maturing band); they had invited Rural Alberta Advantage to play with them, which, as it turns out, would make it the first US show for the Canadian band. I've never seen Pianos that packed on a Tuesday night. Even [...]

This is the debut CD from Kid, You'll Move Mountains, a band hailing from just west of Chicago in Geneva, IL. The band is comprised of ex-members of Troubled Hubble, and they have been out doing some shows around the Chicago area. Got this album a little bit ago, and despite not really knowing what to expect one way or another I am really digging this one and I think these guys are really onto something here. The sound is kind of an old school sound to me, kind of in the [...]

This record is a curious one. I'd never heard of Kid, You'll Move Mountains before, and thus approached Loomings (their debut) with a completely "fresh" ear. As I've learned from previous experience, first-time-listening with my "journalist" hat on is not really the best way to hear a new band: it encourages rushed, overly critical conclusions and sweeping generalisations. In this case I wasn't "grabbed" by the record on my first listen, but decided to give it a second chance (mainly because the design work is really nice, both on the album cover and their website [...]

It's day three...here we go with more from 08! Coffee by Motel Motel - I hate the smell and taste of coffee, but I've declared my love for this song since I first heard it. Unfortunately, that was around the time of CMJs and I was in San Francisco for their November show and I'll be at NBA All-Star for their February show, so please, please play some shows when I'm not trapped in a hotel for [...]

While I'm supposed to be tracking the music I listened to and saw in 2008, I've done a pretty poor job since the summer. This post is going to be more about documenting it for my own recollection than anything super enticing. For that, we have Woody's Neil Diamond Vegas Show Review to look forward to! The Loom [...]

Brooklyn acoustic folk sextet The Loom has harnessed the emotional power and beauty of ensemble vocals and chiming instruments since 2006, drawing large crowds to their many live shows throughout the NY-area. Now, with the release of its debut EP , the rest of the world can enjoy the group's rich amalgam of folk and alt-country influenced indie rock featuring male and female vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, French horn, trumpet, piano, pedal steel, bass, drums, ukulele, accordion, and banjo. The EP , At Last Light boasts soaring and lilting [...]

In Ottawa, we have the first weather report calling for snow. In a panic, I searched for new sounds to keep me warm. Here's one that I'd like to pass along. New York's The Loom seems to be born out of the cold winters and brutal weather that anyone in North Eastern America experiences year-in-and-out. What else drives people indoors to write soul-soothing music. No noise here; members of The Loom craft delicate multi-instrument acoustic arrangements wrapped in blankets of brass horns. Listen to the track "Song for the Winter Sun" from the EP [...]
