Angrylambie The Loud Family - "Cortex the Killler" Is there just a more crushable band in the world than The Loud Family ? If there is, it's probably Game Theory , which is Scott Miller's other, older, band. His newer band, The Loud Family, is sort of an old band now too, though. Miller has said, "I'm utterly serious about music. I just respect the buying public's judgment that it's not what I should do for a living." So instead he is [...]
Idiot Son - Loud Family More health care posting coming tomorrow (hopefully). But for right now, a few thoughts on Joe Lieberman (#@%$#&%, CT): At this point it is clear that he is a massive tool and I completely take back all the things I ever said about making nice with him. I get a fair number of predictions right - and tend to consider myself a fairly astute judge of political stuff - but good lord did I get this one wrong. My theory was that he would [...]
The weekend I was in the Twin Cities for the Umphrey's McGee concert at First Avenue, I had the opportunity to hit Cheapo Discs in Fridley, MN. While not as "hip" or "cool" a location as the Uptown locale, they have a surprisingly decent selection of CD's and LP's and would recommend it. I had a gift certificate for Cheapo from my birthday in October that was burning a hole in my pocket. I had started by perusing the CD's there and had amassed a decent pile, but ended up putting it all away after I started flipping [...]
As some of you know Rock Town Hall has its roots in an old Yahoo Group, which exists to this day. It's often referred to in discussions here as either the "Chess" edition or the "Basement," depending on the tint of veterans' glasses. Regardless, Olde School RTHers still share the occaisional deep cut and rarity with each other, in private. It's almost always cool stuff, and today I'm dragging a few of these tracks to The Main Stage. Thanks, old friends! Along with some basement tapes that I'm hauling into the light of [...]

Every few years I fall head over heals all over again for The Loud Family 's (yes, that is a reference to THE Loud Family ) Plants and Birds and Rocks and Things (yes, that is a reference to America's (NOT NEIL YOUNG's) "Horse with No Name"). I guess my two years is up, because I've been listening on repeat again and also forcing people (like my poor friend Emily) to listen to them as well (if I'm going down, I'm taking you with me). While [...]
We put our daughter on the bus to the second grade today, marking the earliest start to school I can recall (August 13? Seriously?). She met her teacher last night, and was immediately stoked to discover that said instructor is young and fashionable, which could not be said for my second grade teacher, who I recall being stern and seventy. The cheetah-print chair sitting in the corner of the new classroom was seen as a good omen, with The Cheetah Girls: One World set to premiere next week. We're having a [...]

Sacramento's Game Theory were a band I once obsessed over during the last half of the Eighties when indie-rock was more a mission than a marketing concept and college radio actually had some relevance. Led by guitarist, singer & songwriter Scott Miller, Game Theory owed a big debt to Big Star . And of the quirky post-REM-like janglists and borderline Paisley Undergrounders like The dB's , Let's Active , Dream [...]
Scott Miller's voice is one of a kind. I can't think of any other artist/band to compare him too. At the time that Game Theory was most popular, it was assumed that he was making some of the best pop to be found anywhere. It's been two decades since the last Game Theory album and Scott has since formed the band The Loud Family which still records to this day. Here's a couple mp3's from the Loud Family archives: Songs About "Rocks Off" [...]
via fluxblog and asap After spending most of this decade in retirement, '80s college radio icon Scott Miller has finally returned from his self-imposed exile with a new Loud Family album recorded as a collaboration with fellow Californian power pop songwriter Anton Barbeau. The record kicks off with a relatively straight cover of the Rolling Stones' classic "Rocks Off," and then settles into the delicately [...]

In an update to an interview we did with Scott Miller in 2004, the Loud Family patriarch discusses his new album, a collaboration with Sacramento pop eccentric Anton Barbeau.
My new Hit Refresh column is up on the ASAP site . This week: Matthew Friedberger, Ratatat, and a selection from Rio Baile Funk: More Favela Booty Beats . Also, my review of Talladega Nights is up on The Movie Binge , though that site seems to be down as of this writing. Be Your Own Pet "October, First Account" - For better or worse, most of Be Your Own [...]
