I always get excited when there's something new by The Lovely Sparrows . And while we've had "While Sailing" for some time now (the track was released on last year's EP, Tall Cedars of Lebanon ), their video is a fresh look at the song; a confounding one at that. It's why I've been holding off on writing about it: I just don't quite get it. There's a dinner party, what appear to be a few biblical references, zombies, and a weird science concoction. But underneath is the song [...]

First off, if you don't already listen to The Lovely Sparrows on a regular basis then you are missing out. Their sound is something different, but a really really good different. Founded in 2005 by Shawn Jones and longtime friend Jason Cooper, Lovely Sparrows walks a fine line between experimental and indie rock. While Sailing starts off fuzzy and unrecognizable but soon you can make out faint voices that have a nostalgic and warm feeling. Four minutes of this song and you will feel relaxed after a long day of work. The Lovely Sparrows are on tour in [...]

Delivered to you live(ish) from Istria , welcome to Toadcast No. 233, the Crocast, recorded whilst travelling some of Europe's prettiest coastline. Or sort. Actually it is recorded in one of the most horrendous resort complexes either of us has ever seen, but this is just a mere stop on the way; tomorrow we shall be travelling some of Europe's prettiest coastline! We even managed to turn up at the rent-a-car place with an expired driving license and credit card which didn't actually work, and they still gave us a car without so [...]

We've been doing up the floors in our house, stripping out the carpet, repainting the walls, painting the trim and doors, and laying down a rich brown woven bamboo (hence the lateness of this post and the general lack of posts this week). It's a project that should add equity to our house and, one day, our pockets. I threw this playlist together Friday morning and set to work stripping carpet from the hallway while it played in the background. Then I threw on some vinyl and rounded out the [...]

It's hard to imagine that just a few short months ago we were enjoying sunny summer days. 2011 was my best year yet, having achieved a few milestones: four and a half years running FensePost, riding my bike from Seattle to Portland and logging over 1,000 total on those two wheels between January and December, enjoying life with the love of my life (Andi), and a few defining mindset changes that put the two of us on a path to minimalism and frugality. All of this has led to happiness. That the [...]

The Lovely Sparrows have a way of putting together words and music that make the band one of today's leading folk-rock and folk-pop artists. With Tall Cedars of Lebanon , the Sparrows continue the trend they began as early as their debut EP, Pulling Up Floors, Pouring On (New) Paint . The musicianship remains just as tight and focused as was on Bury The Cynics . But Tall Cedars isn't without its difference from the band's prior work. Where Tall Cedars [...]

This is called the Changecast because, in an absolutely stunning turn of events, it is not packed full of lo-fi garage rock for a bloody change. Considering the racket you've had to put up with for the last year or so, it seems I have kindly granted you the respite of three songs you'd probably vaguely describe as Americana and a couple which are most unmistakably pop! I know! Get me! Tonight is of course the Rob St. John album launch down at Pilrig St. Paul's in Leith. He will be joined on the bill by Viking Moses, [...]

Tuesday, October 11, 2011 Today's Quick Mention: There's plenty to see tonight. Weird Weeds are playing Cherrywood Coffeehouse, Friendly Fires and Theophilus London are at La Zona Rosa, and Death Cab For Cutie has Telekinesis opening for them at the Austin Music Hall. The Lovely Sparrows have pretty much been a SOTO favorite since the creation of the site, so it really pleases me to be posting up the first single off their brand new EP, Tall Cedars Of Lebanon. Check [...]

I entered the studio at about 9:35pm, meeting up with Stuarto, who has the time slot before mine. A quick interview about 15 minutes before my show, another few songs, and I was up. It was requested that I attempt a transition, and as indie music is my theme, and world music is his, I figured I'd kick things off with an oldie, but goodie: "The Gulag Orkestar" by Beirut. The theme of the evening, loosely, centered around folk. Indie folk, folk pop, folk rock, orchestral folk, experimental folk... [...]

Au tout début il y a la Big Star de Alex Chilton , qui l'écrit. Puis il y a Yo La Tengo , qui la reprennent. Aujourd'hui il a The Lovely Sparrows, qui reprennent la reprise. Take Care... Et bonne nuit ! The Lovely Sparrows Take Care (2009) mis en images par Eric Power un clic [...]

When I compiled my original Best Of 2008 list last December, it was a snow day. The sky dropped about a foot, maybe a foot and a half of fluffy white stuff and we lowly sub-compact drivers could go nowhere. Between ranking albums and locating album art, I took a stroll around town with my camera. The above image comes from that trek. Overall, I was pretty happy with last year's list but, in revisiting all the albums from 2008, I now see quite a few that I left out. [...]
This is a great music video directed and animated by Eric Powers for The Lovely Sparrows version of Yo La Tengo's cover of Big Star's song "Take Care". And this is an excellent song by the way. Enjoy!
and now something special folks This is the 20th animated music video of the APC fave animation maestro, Eric Power !!! CONGRATZ and we want hundreds of more Eric! He says: - The track is from The Lovely Sparrows, and the song is called Take Care. It is a cover of a Yo La Tengo song, which was originally a cover of a Big Star song. Love how these things evolve. -

Originally recorded in 1974 by Big Star, Alex Chilton's "Take Care" wasn't released until 1978 on their Third/Sister Lovers LP. In 2003, Yo La Tengo included a rendition of track on their album Summer Sun . Finally, in 2009, The Lovely Sparrows laid down their version of Yo La Tengo's version while recording demos for their upcoming sophomore release. A video was made. Writes The Lovely Sparrows' front-man Shawn Jones about how the video came to be: I recorded this song (Take [...]

Let me tell you a story. In 2007 some notable things happened. I attended the annual music festival SXSW (the image above is of myself and The Lovely Sparrows' Shawn Jones, taken by Abandoned Love Records/Virgin Of The Birds' Jon Rooney), I grew a mustache, and I met a beautiful girl named Andi. She was waiting for her uncle (Eno of Spoon) at the Capitol Hill Block Party. We hit it off and ditched the after-party to get a sprite (her) and coffee (me) at Denny's in Ballard (sadly no longer there) at 1:30am. I [...]
