When The Low Anthem self released their full length Oh My God, Charlie Darwin in 2008, people took notice, and when those people heard tell that the band was recording a follow-up, expectations began to build as they are wont to do. I was one of those people, listening to OMGCD on repeat and thinking of how fantastic I just knew the next album would be, not thinking that all of that excitement may doom the album to failure in my mind. Well, the time is upon us-- Smart Flesh is due [...]

I enjoyed The Low Anthem's previous album "Oh My God Charlie Darwin." It was a nice, simple album that, but did not feature much other than soothing vocals and acoustic guitar. With this new album, "Smart Flesh" I am looking for a little more instrumentation and maybe a little more emphasis on percussion. However it does not seem I am going to get this from The Low Anthem. It seems like were going to get the same old same old. This does not mean I won't like this new album, but it will probably not be going on my [...]
Smart Flesh may have been recorded in a vast, abandoned pasta sauce factory in Rhode Island, but it sounds anything like it. The follow-up to Oh My God, Charlie Darwin is as warm, fuzzy and intimate as if these 11 tracks were put down in a tiny living room with thick shag carpets, an open fire and a Saint Bernard as a draught excluder in front of the door. Where its predecessor sometimes jarred, with its combination of raw bluesy rock and gentle acoustics, Smart Flesh is a more unified beast, whose woody, [...]
Rhode Island-based The Low Anthem struck a chord with many critics and fans alike with their debut full length. On February 22nd they return with the new studio effort Smart Flesh. This time around the band have broken out of their understated folk mode to provide a more varied and complex album. The highlight is undoubtedly the well-crafted slow country lament "Apothecary Love". It's feeling

We here at When The Gramophone Rings like The Low Anthem . We like them alot. In fact, we thought their last album, Oh My God, Charlie Darwin was the third best album of 2009 . Made up of four multi-instrumentalists - Mat Davidson was bumped up from touring buddy to official member in 2009 - they specialise in heart-in-mouth moments of bluesy acoustic Americana. Treasures on Oh My God, Charlie Darwin included the title track itself as well as the gorgeous To Ohio . [...]

Looking forward to anything can be brutal. Often times, there's a disconnect between the lofty unattainable vision you created in your head and what is delivered to you in reality. Think the first time you got laid, the McDLT, and Waterworld . But every so often, the stars align and you are delivered everything you expected and a whole mess more. Ladies and gentlemen, The Low Anthem just delivered one of those moments. HearYa Live Session producer, Steve Shirk, once labeled The Low Anthem as "The Masters of Restraint." It's an apt description. The band is meticulous [...]

Jocie Adams not only has a new album with The Low Anthem about to hit shelves, but the singer, multi-instrumentalist, and former NASA technician has recorded a solo debut as well, quietly releasing the 11-track effort at an intimate show with the Barr Brothers last week in Cambridge, MA. Bed of Notions offers plenty of alt-Americana gems for the Low Anthem crowd in addition to more whimsical, cello-backed tales for Joanna Newsom fans like myself, particularly "Chastity, Let Down Your Golden Hair" and a mature rewrite of English nursery rhyme "Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary," dubbed simply [...]

Sometimes we bloggers take music for granted. We forget that the words and feelings behind a song or an album are born from real things that have shaped an artist's life. A torn relationship isn't just a break-up when the person had a name and a face and a being you loved. From their forthcoming [...]
