I'd be a lot more inclined to be patriotically English if all our national traditions weren't as fucking lame as prancing about the Maypole and nonsense like that. Actually, that's a lie. I'm not English enough to be patriotically English, and patriotism gives me the fucking creeps anyway, in all its guises. Not that this has anything to do with the unavoidable fact that the Maypole is still just a little bit silly, of course. We aren't really getting the Spring weather up here in Scotland, although it's been threatening it here and there. Still, it [...]

"Camino De Soda" by The Machine Room. Didn't know the band really or this song until I saw the video at Listen Before You Buy . Nice choice.

Electro-synth shoegazers, The Machine Room arrived on the prolific Edinburgh, Scotland music scene in 2010 as a five-piece made up of Tom Adam, John Bryden, Adie Emanuel, Scott Hitchings, and Ryan Marinello (Adam has since left and Cecilia Stamp has joined). In the same way that New Order weave the bitter into the sweet, The Machine Room expertly craft succinct yet ethereal rhythms. Not afraid of showing off lush bass hooks combined with crystalline guitar lines over persistent arpeggios, they set an ideal backdrop to John Bryden's husky, falsetto vocals. [...]

Edinburgh's not really renowned for it's synth-pop bands. In fact, Matthew will probably have a heart attack at the very thought of such a genre being discussed on the hallowed ground that is his blog. There are certain connotations with this sort of sound, and ever since The Killers appeared it's kind of been untouched by any self-respecting musician, kind of like what Mumford and Sons have done to folk music. However, to simply call The Machine Room a synth-pop band would be an injustice as there is far more to them than Micro-Korgs and haircuts. 'Love From a [...]

You know when a band releases a great single, thus placing relatively high expectations on their debut EP, but then you listen and it's a slight let down? Well, I do. Edinburgh quintet The Machine Room are releasing their EP Love From A Distance on March 5th, but after listening, I don't think it's going to be a hugely-anticipated release. Said 'great single' of course being 'Camino De Soda' was released December last year. It's easy to listen to, swamped in reverb, and strangely relaxing, making for a promising remainder of the [...]
Well after a weekend of total mayhem in Scotland's capital city, what the fuck are we in for this time around? Well there's a few things actually, although one of my personal choices is pretty much sold out, I do believe: that being Withered Hand & the Pictish Trail at the Caves on Thursday . If there are a few tickets left I suggest you turn up at the door pretty promptly in order to score one. Tuesday 28th Feb: The Cast of Cheers & Theme Park at the [...]

I was instantly attracted to dreampop of Edinburgh's The Machine Room . They collect all the elements of the early 90's shoegaze and dreampop and mix them with the revived synths and vocal styles of today. I can continue to gush about these four songs or you can just listen for yourself! Love from a Distance by The Machine Room
Influences; all bands have them. They can be a source of inspiration, ideas to take, twist and develop as your own, something to aspire to, a challenge to match. Alternatively they can be ripped off, cheaply watered down and just plain old stolen as a cash-in. How influences are used can make or break a band, and also save them from, or condemn them to, a critical mauling. For every group genre-mashing/borrowing geniuses such as The Horrors or The Go! Team there are half a dozen facsimiles like The Pigeon Detectives. Edinburgh's The Machine Room have selected their [...]

King Post Kitsch In his quest to continue to give away great music for free, King Post Kitsch really does rule the roost. This week he decided to share a new EP with the world and rather ace it is too, coming in at just under 6 minutes it's a short but sweet trip, but one well worth taking. I am particularly taken with the lead instrumental track, 'Nocturnal Wandering', but as always with these things you don't need to take my word for it, find out for yourself by downloading the EP for free here [...]

Twin Sister, By Kenny McMurtrie By Kenny McMurtrie Keen as mustard to be on stage for the capacity crowd here tonight Twin Sister delivered note perfect renderings of such numbers as 'Champy' and set closer 'All Around And Away We Go', along with a couple (including the encore) of duets between just Andrea (looking a tad over-dressed for the event) and Eric. Undoubtedly a nice bunch, their music comes across well in a live setting but one couldn't help but feel that it would be even better appreciated [...]

The Machine Room shouldn't be good. They make music that could quite comfortably be labelled funk or disco, but we live in a world where things make no sense and, although your head says no, most other parts of your body will certainly be saying yes. While the Edinburgh group certainly straddle a very fine line - one where their next song could very easily cross it, quickly turning them into Nick Grimshaw-backed tripe - for now they sit on the right side of it; this is good, clean fun. [...]

After last week's fuss, I'm so over Lana del Rey now. So over. All that "is-she, isn't-she fake ?" fuss is just so tedious , although here I am still yapping on about her. So, I'm going to focus on the one aspect that has been half-forgotten whilst her mostly-drab MOR pop silently grinds its way to centre stage: her big, deliciously over-inflated lips. Cor, look at them. They're like big, kissable pillows on the front of her head. Yum yum yum. Alex James From Blur celebrates Lana's [...]

Edinburgh's Tape Studio have worked with acts like Amanda Palmer and have two Studer tape machines to make your inner audiophile's mouth water. They've also recently unveiled their new Singles Club. The concept for the Club is simply intermittent releases of split 7" vinyl singles featuring two local artists that Tape have worked with previously. The idea itself had enough potential to attract our attention, but the pairing of Dead Boy Robotics and The Machine Room is a match made in heaven for lovers of electronica-tinged indie. DEAD [...]
