For over 1,200 days now, the Guardian's Paul Lester has been hunting down the hottest and fastest rising stars in music for his (aptly titled) New Band of the Day column, Such is the success of Lester's up-to-the-minute scribblings, the Guardian have started showcasing some of the fresh talent on offer. Tonight's show at Camden Barfly is the second New Band of the Day Live shows and features five names you'll surely hear more from later this year. The first name you may recognise from a certain family member. Opening tonight are the gloriously grungey [...]

Inspired by the return of one of my favorite TV shows, the hyper self-aware Community (whose Abed could be considered the patron saint of meta-humor) and the self-referring "Simple Song" on the new Shins album out this week, I've made a mix of my favorite meta-referential songs. By this I mean songs that include specific references to themselves in the lyrics (stuff like "it goes like this, the fourth, the fifth...", "take it to the chorus" and "Second verse, same as the first verse" are out). It turns out there are a [...]

The Magic Numbers - Crazy In Love [Beyonce] | zs watch the original
An eclectic mix of eleven tunes for the day that's in it.

John Jervis, impresario of the wonderful Where It's At Is Where You Are label, has just announced his big project for 2012. WIAIWYA is launching the 7777777 singles club, releasing 7 7" singles, on the 7th of the month, one on each day of the week, on rainbow-coloured vinyl. It sounds like the sort of situationist art-prank that would be entered for the Turner Prize but WIAIWYA has form in releasing quality music. The release schedule is: Saturday 7 January: the Wave Pictures Tuesday 7 February: [...]
It's going to be impossible to claim that Beyoncé Knowles has "quietly" put together a vicious song catalog, stocked with everything from heart-wrenching ballads to shamelessly fun bangers , but she has done it without some of the fanfare associated with other pop stars. And, you know, the musical work is stellar; it makes a ton of sense that others have dove into reinterpreting her songs. Jumping off with yesterday's cover by The Horrors , here's the ten best indie rock covers of Beyoncé's sterling, still-growing catalog. Read More...
A review of the October 5th gig by James Yorkston, Alasdair Roberts & Adrian Crowley at the Belltable in Limerick.

Jim Sharp is back with another handful of crafted edits of old and new. A particular favorite of mine is the Otis edit. The best bit, in my opinion, of Kanye & Jay Z's track Otis is of course the sample of Reading himself, Jim has blended the original edit with the rap vocals giving the man credit for such an awesome track to begin with. Check out his Soundcloud for more. Try A Little Otis (Jim Sharp Edit) by Jim Sharp [...]

Thrilling softly to the song of 36 , whose Reunion/Deluge , latest in lovely "3six Seven" series of ltd. ed. 7"s, continues his sonorous Sixing-up of the Magic Number . Mr Six (3 to his mates) here maintains a spotless record for gauzy drawn-out texturalism with a chorally-enhanced set of his customary immersive drift-scapes. As with the preceding Cocoon/Saphron , it makes for a nifty package for ambience-chasing vinyl-buffs, with arresting artwork by underwater photographer, Elena Kalis . Pressing of both was, alas, limited to a paltry [...]

16 April, 2011 It is fitting that on the weekend of the FA Cup Semi-Finals the Pewsey locals hanging on the boughs of branches on the other side of the fence to hear some of the acts at the inaugural Honeyfest remind us of those doing the same at the famous Hereford vs. Newcastle game some 39 years ago. Damien Rice Honeyfest was originally scheduled to take place December last year but inclement weather put paid to that and instead [...]
The Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon and friends cover Vampire Weekend's self-titled debut album for the JD Set.

Your Lord And Savior. The Anorexic High School Years. I had my first panic attack when I was 15 years old. I was sitting in Mrs. Gugger's 2nd period Spanish class and it come on without warning. My heart began palpitating, tunnel vision set in, and I started to feel nauseous. I excused myself from the room without asking and walked slowly down the hall to the bathroom, where I stood around trying to find my breath for a few minutes. When I thought I was feeling better I walked back to the class room. Within minutes, the [...]

A band that began eleven years ago in a graveyard, slowly grew into indie superstars. We trace their musical beginnings, their moments of disillusionment, and live through some of the stories that have inevitably seeped into their folksy Britpop-tinged music, over some rooftop laughter and chilled beer. "We spent some time in upstate New York, our friend David K was recording some stuff. I remember there was just this gig, and it was in this house, and we were sitting this close to Emily Harris. The drummer was there with his drumkit, and his dog [...]

British indie rockers The Magic Numbers and Banglore folk rock act The Raghu Dixit Project closed The Dewarists Stage on the final day of the Bacardi NH7 Weekender . With opening slots by Project S, Faridkot and PINKNOISE being sizably cut short, The Magic Numbers could play no more than eight songs. The band warmed the crowd up with opener 'This Is A Song' and got everyone singing with 'Forever Lost'. The irresistible female backing-vocal duo of Angela Gannon and Michele Stodart shone throughout, as both [...]
