Oh, my loves, it is the month of love, and I do love love! I am not one of the bitter single people; no, I relish the chance to listen to my favorite love songs and stuff myself silly with all manners of candy. So I present to you, my wonderful valentines playlist. Or it could be a galentines playlist, or a guyentines playlist. It’s always great to bro down with some love songs, right? You have to start off with the classic; God Only Knows what we’d do without the Beach Boys. Then Ben Gibbard [...]

You know the score. MM is a blog that (musically) tends to favour the seedier side of life - murder ballads, heartbreak, despair, stories of the downtrodden, the down-on-their-luck, and the downhearted - you know the kind of things we mean. Ours is a world of lonely beer and whiskey chasers nursed in the back booths of dead-end bars, of crack-whores turning tricks in trailers while their children listen on from the next room, and of purposeless drifters stumbling broke, and broken, through dusty ghost-towns. Its just the way we like it round these parts. And [...]

Tiger Waves , the Austin-born band, is made up of Reid Comstock, James Marshall, Joshua Kerl, Tyler Wharen and Nick Volpe. Reid and James started the band in 2011, working from two different cities: Austin and Chicago. It wasn’t until Reid relocated to Austin that the band gained its three other members. I was lucky enough to see them perform at The Empty Bottle in Chicago on February 10, 2013 and speak with them afterward. You can tell the band is close-knit and all of their touring only served to bring them closer together. Read below as [...]

In March of 2012 Stephen Merritt released the best Magnetic Fields album since 20042s i largely because it benefits with vast improvements in production over recent releases. Love at the Bottom of the Sea , song-writing wise is nothing but aces, but it could have been a whole lot better. Unfortunately for Love at the Bottom of the Sea , Merritt farmed-out half of the vocal duties to Claudia Gonson and Shirly Simms . I certainly appreciate most of the guest vocal contributions to 69 Love Songs, [...]
Whether you experience Christmas as a spiritual curative or a wretched crucible likely depends upon your capacity to enjoy the Yuletide season's truly disassociate spirit of insanity. Most of us may consider ourselves largely inured at this point to the curiously redundant recurring color schemes, the unnaturally oppressive nighttime lighting and deeply strange rituals, the whole notion of dwarves and deer running amuck with bounty and coal. On a conscious level, most of us just take that the whole thing in stride. Well, you might say, that's just Christmas! Read More...

Whether my newfound love of 73s has distracted my attention from albums proper, I don't know (although I have amassed a hefty pile of LPs over the last 12 months), but choosing the top 10 LPs of this year has been tough. The top spots were secure from the beginning, but this year filling-in the lower orders has been a decidedly tricky operation. The trouble stems from the uniformity of quality of display this year. The top two stand head-and-shoulders above the rest of the pack, but all the others are almost on a level. Deciding on an order for [...]
Top 10 albums of 2012 Well, it's December, it's a week until Christmas, it's midweek and I'm drinking. That can mean only one thing, I've read Trotter's Top 10 for this year and felt compelled to pen a response. Yes, it's time to pore over the musical detritus of 2012 and pick out the wheat from the chaff... Or, to let my inner geek put things into lists... Here, we start with a list of the top 10 albums which I have enjoyed muchly this year. In a seperate post [...]
There's a certain bond between music and a listener. We can all relate to it, but everyone has a different way of expressing it. For Matt Latterell and Chuck Terhark, that way of expression is t...

Our very earliest associates and supporters may remember that the origins of The Cargo Culte lay in a collection of mixes that BaddBob and I began sharing in the late fall and winter of 2008. A few scant months after the banking meltdown I found myself back in Los Angeles after eight years of wandering, [...]

So the waiting is over, and here are the first twenty entries in our Top 100 of 2012, part of MM's much expanded Best of the Year review. Over the next five days we will reveal our favourite songs and those of our contributors: Mrs Mackerel, Christy Popper, Barry-Sean, Dr Roddy, Polly Pocket, Middle Sprat, Starbie, and Toy Steve. These are not the most "popular" songs of the year, nor do they lay any subjective claim to being the "best", but they are without doubt the favourites of all those who have written for MM one way or another this [...]
On last night's episode of Soundcheck for New York City's WNYC radio, Beck Hansen called in to discuss his Song Reader project. The episode also featured various interpretations of Beck's songs, including one of “Old Shanghai” by The Magnetic Fields' Stephin Merritt , who performed the song on a toy piano. Take a listen to the full episode here (scroll to the 10:30 mark to hear Merritt's performance).

Sticking to last year's guns we’re not going to be so trite as to rehearse the old argument about iTunes having killed the album, but we can't ignore the fact that the way we listen to music today is almost unidentifiable to the way in which we listened but just a few years ago. Single sales might be collapsing but with mp3 blogs going from strength to strength, the cult of the DJ enjoying a continued resurgence and the endless stock of individual remixes that have dominated our pages, the stock of the individual track is as strong [...]
