Exactly what makes this song rather brilliant is a bit of mystery, to me at least. The winter steals from you, it's true – days, and the song's refrain is, "Nights filled with longer hours." It begins with a whispered phrase, and the upbeat kids take over from there, shouting "Hey!" while voices sing the aforementioned refrain. There's a pause, the potential for a bit of a pretentious schizophrenic quiet moment, which is happily circumvented. The effect that the use of strings has on a band's degree of singularity often impresses me, granting illustrious moments of emotional potency even while the other instrumental aspects are minimally conventional at best. Without the aid of violinist Matt Levitt, it is entirely possible that The Main Drag would be grouped into the masses of other whiney indie-rock bands led by boisterous guitars and rehashed melodies; hardly the epitome of innovation. In the first of what I hope will be a Sufjan-sized avalanche of blog postings, The Yellow Stereo wrote about the new Main Drag album recently. The album is entitled Yours as Fast as Mine and is due on July 19 -- it'll be the group's second, following the thoroughly excellent Simmer in Your Hotseat . Yesterday day I made a marvelous little discovery on garageband.com- The Main Drag , a Boston band that I think is ready for a leap into recognition.
