Seattle summers are increasingly filled with great musical festivals/events, so congrats to the newest kid on the Block for beating the big guys on local line-ups. Best local line up of the summer? Not CHBP. Not Georgetown. Not even Bumbershoot. It's the 2nd Annual Doe Bay Music Festival, which charmingly isn't held on the Block [...]

Cosmic Panther Land Band ::: Photo by Josh Moments like this make me glad. From a Facebook bulletin the night before the "secret" show: Let's just say.... hypothetically... members of Maldives, Shim, Moondoggies and Widower wanted to contribute to Noise for the Needy this year. But let's say most of those bands were contractually obliged to not play shows within [...]

Photos by: Charlie Homo Or, the Whale The Maldives Built for the Sea
One of the most reliably entertaining live bands in the Bay Area, Or, the Whale possess that endearing combination of superb musicianship and the ability to cut loose and have fun. The national re-release of Light Poles and Pines earlier this year on Seany Records kicked off a series of tours and country radio success. With a new album completed and awaiting release, we're pleased to present the band's homecoming performance from their recent West Coast tour. [...]

The Maldives at Cafe Vita ::: Photo by Josh Lovseth Nestled in the bottom of the Tractor Tavern's latest calendar update is the news we've been waiting for: the complete lineup announcement for their 15th Anniversary shows at the end of August. As we already knew anchoring all three night's are recent Mt. Fuji Records' signing [...]
This is the first of three giveaways today on what's become "Giveaway Friday" at The Bay Bridged. Keep checking back for more opportunities to win stuff! Or, the Whale - "Rope Don't Break" We're quite excited about the show we're presenting on Saturday, June 6th at The Independent , featuring two of our favorite local bands, Or, the Whale and Built for the Sea , along with The Maldives , a Seattle [...]

Fleet Foxes at 2008 Capitol Hill Block Party Photo : Drake LeLane Drake was out at the CHBP last year , and if he can find a good babysitter, he should be back again in 2009 (but this time with his elbows deep in the pit). Anyway, here's what the initial (but quite deep) lineup for this year's Capitol Hill Block Party ( July 24 - 25th, Seattle, WA ) looks like: Sonic Youth, The Jesus Lizard, The [...]

The Maldives ::: Photo by Josh Stupidly I arrived at Cafe Vita just at the Maldives 5.30 showtime and to my jaw-dropping disappointment they'd roped off the stairs to the packed-to-the-gills upper floor. I'd never even considered showing up early for a band that routinely sells out shows. Idiot. Patience and a little resourcefulness paid off though, and I did eventually squeeze up to the front for the last song, a new one that by my reckoning that is one of their best songs yet. Start your Monday right by turning that browser [...]

Capitol Hill took the title this year for most donors in KEXP's Hood to Hood Challenge this year so they get a day packed with many of Seattle's best acts and KEXP DJ's dj-ing in coffee shops, record stores and a few other places as well. Cafe Vita will be hosting live performances throughout the day including from the Moondoggies, the Black Kids and the Maldives. Full details of all the good stuff happening at KEXP.org .

The Maldives ::: Photo by Abbey The only surprise we felt when we heard today that The Maldives were signed to up and coming local label Mt. Fuji, was that it had taken someone so long to sign a band with such massive appeal and potential. The Maldives have played their share of sold out shows at the Sunset Tavern in the past few months, so it comes as no surprise to us that Sunset booker Mike Jaworski has also transferred his favor to the band in the form of now formal support from [...]

I know I've been pummeling you in the face with round-after-round of noisey, lo-fi garage rock, but thanks to a sunny afternoon and my special lady friend in San Francisco, I stumbled upon Or, The Whale this morning. I actually met Alex from the band at a little vegetarian restaurant in The Mission yesterday and was shocked to learn that these gents and ladies had become fast friends with the gents and ladies of none other than Seattle folk-favorites The Maldives. I believe the words are: small world. Not only are they pals with one of my favorite [...]

The Staredown ::: Photos by Josh What do you get when you throw a bunch of cigarette-smoking, beer-guzzling, rock-n'-roll barflies out on a field for a Super Bowl Sunday game of backyard two-hand-touch? A whole lot of sucking wind. Thanks to a tip off by Don Slack, yesterday we headed into the cold in the hours leading up to the Super Bowl where the Moondoggies and the Maldives had convened for such a game. While we didn't hang around to the end (we needed to make a whiskey run ourselves before the liquor store shut [...]
With nearly 200 shows under my belt in 2008, it's hard to narrow down my favorites to just 15- but after much thought-here they are. I went for singular shows/sets, rather than including entire festivals such as Bumbershoot and Georgetown, which would have easily qualified for best of status. The photos are ordered, with my favorite show of the year on top and so forth. Hope you caught at least a couple of these shows in 2008 too! Monotonix at The Sunset Tavern-and Ballard Avenue (9/28/08) [...]

The Maldives at Slackfest ::: Photo by Abbey The Maldives Christmas Special at the Tractor Tavern with the Moondoggies is still on as far as we know right now (at 6:24pm), but we aren't sure we'll be able to make it across town even if it does go off. The streets are pretty well blanketed and we're considering sledding down the hills on garbage can lids. The PI has a headline saying the storm will be "life-threatening" with heavy winds to start up so, so I think they're trying to tell us we should stick around our own [...]

Sure, I've been a bit disparaging about Husband Love Your Wives in the past on Sound On The Sound - it's just not my type of music. Yet, for undisclosed reasons, Ms. Spiess has spent a considerable amount of time in the hospital as of late, and as we all know the American health care system doesn't turn its head at milking the uninsured for all their worth, so, it seems Spiess has racked up a good deal of debt. Lucky for her, and honestly, us a great group of local musicians are coming together at The Sunset to help [...]
