As noted yesterday, we're in Puerto Rico for an extended vacation, lazily hopping around the eastern side of the island in fits and starts. Old San Juan was my kind of town, and the perfect port of entry: just touristy enough, with authentic architecture and blue cobblestone streets, fine funky coffeeshops, and the most beautiful green labyrinth of a hotel, with resident parrots and a view of the sea over La Perla off the balcony. But two days in the city was more than enough, and now we're in a stunningly spacious rental home in Ceiba, with [...]

As noted on our Donate page , here at Cover Lay Down we insist on remaining ad-free and non-profit - the better to focus our attention and your support on those artists we tout week in and week out, thus making it possible for them to keep their hands and voices in the game full-time, for the benefit of all. But making and reinforcing connections between musicians and the community they serve isn't free. The amount of bandwidth it takes to serve our growing readership runs well over a terabyte of data [...]
In the final part of his look at the Black Metal evolution over the past 20 years, today Tom Dare is examining the murkier and more indistinct realms of "post"-Black Metal band, as well as those bands who might've moved beyond the boundaries of Black Metal musically, still remain within the genre in spirit, at least.... 6) Post-Black Metal The post-black metal mob (aka, the sub-sub-genre where we shove bands we don't know how else to label [...]
For those of you unfamiliar with the name Amit Sharma, he's the swish young longhair you'll have seen interviewing bands over on our YouTube channel. Amit is so superfly, that Corey Taylor once mistook him for an actual rockstar. True story. He really, really wanted his own page to tell you about his favourite albums [...]
The votes are in, the arguments have been settled, and the fights concluded without too much bloodshed - The Thrash Hits Top 20 Albums of 2011 list is here. We polled all of our writers, photographers, and contributors as to what their favourite records of the year have been, and through a series of complex [...]

I put this remix out in late 2009 - early 2010. If you were a fan back then, you probably got it, but I'm resurrecting it for a couple reasons. The first I don't record my live sets at shows, and people have been asking for some downloadable live sets. Second, my performances are 100% original, and I like to have a very unique feel to what you hear production wise versus the live show. Keeps peeps on their toes. Anyways, this was recorded live at KALX studios in Berkeley, California back when I was doing monthly shows there. Enjoy [...]

. . . Mammal is a perfect title. The album (Profound Lore/Candlelight, 2011) is warm-blooded, a deceptive predator. The more you listen, the more you realize that it doesn't seek to render you numb, but rather to make you feel. It's moving because it speaks to what makes us human. There's something daunting about albums with four songs. I remember when the longest songs in my collection were "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" and "Warning". In less than a year, several of the best metal albums (Grayceon and Salome) have songs that flirt [...]
Ian Lokae is a friend of mine in the Bay Area. He's also a dope producer and DJ, a member of my homies The Slayers Club. We exchanged stems awhile back. He remixed me, and I him. Here's my version of his track, "Til the End." Enjoy the free download. Tweet
The Glitch Mob had a remix contest for this track in 2010. I did up an Ample Mammal version. Submitted it and all that. I guess it didn't make the cut, but here, you can have mine for FREE. Enjoy. Spread it around. Tweet
![[EP] Mammal Club – THE AU EP (w/ "Otter" & "Hang")](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3570847_lg.jpg)
well i don't think we're ever gonna know ♫ Mammal Club - Otter Keep your eye on Mammal Club. Seriously. If these guys aren't huge by new years then there is no justice in the world. I wish I could say they were my find but it was Brighton's The Recommender that tipped me off to these guys from Newcastle who are currently reigning over my iTunes with an iron fist of an EP. "Otter" kicks off the 4 tracks and stops me in my tracks every time I hear [...]

During my freshman year of high school, I played tuba in the marching band. And believe it or not, it was a pretty cool experience. Granted, I quit the instrument and the band after that year, but during the span of my introduction to high school, I marched around on a field in uniform and [...]

The second full-length by the Irish band heads in a direction few of us could have foreseen. Following the career arcs of so many metal bands at the same time, things can get predictable to the point where you're able to anticipate well in advance where some bands are taking their music. Some more gifted bands knock you off your chair by advancing their music farther than anyone could have expected, but for the most part, the musical growth is subtle enough to sound like it was what we had been expecting...

I recommend as well. MAMMAL CLUB - The Recommender http://t.co/oEMveuj

Everything Everything are a band that's known to be something of an acquired taste, but our palate devoured them as if they'd been prepared by a Michelin -starred chef. Some dismissed their sound as over-complicated or too random, but we bloody loved it, finding them incredibly inventive and original, whilst still providing hooks and singles in abundance. Well, Mammal Club are being touted as a more palatable Everything Everything, so we're poised and salivating all over our keyboard. We'd heard Mammal Club's debut EP, AU , upon it's release on the Everybodys Stalking [...]
Hailing from Cork, Altar of Plagues are easily one of the most interesting young bands to come out of Ireland today. Their debut album White Tomb gained them international recognition, tours with the likes of Isis and Mayhem, and a hard won fanbase. With such reputable musicians as Aaron Turner (Isis/Hyrdahead Records) and Ben Frost singing their praises many were left wondering how White Tomb would ever be topped. Mammal is a brilliantly executed and wonderfully diverse album. All in all it exudes confidence beyond the band's years and exhibits a well refined [...]
It's no secret that Chicago rockers A Lull are hard to pin down musically. There are a lot of tribal beats and and chanting mixed with guitars and double drum action present in the band's songs. The music is simply larger than life. Because this of this, it is so amazing to watch A Lull pull it off in a live setting. Coach House Sounds tried to capture all that raw ambient power in its latest concert series featuring a number of songs from A Lull's most recent album Confetti including "Mammals," "Weapons for [...]
