Photo from emmlpop's flickr Having quietly released three singles last year and inexplicably none of them making my top 40 last year, the Blanch Hudson Weekend have just put it in my face the glaring mistake I made by releasing a CD the compiles all three singles and throws on seven more songs for just the hell of it. Caroline and Darren of the Manhattan Love Suicides make up the core of Blanche Hudson Weekend, and if you were wondering whether or not the duo still have a [...]

Earlier on this week my friend Callum asked me to compile him a "shoegaze" type mixtape that he could play at a gig that he is hosting. Just something that could act as a noise filler before, between and after the bands have played. I was undecided about whether or not to make it an hour and a half or 2 hours so instead settled for the standard 1 hour and 18 minutes to allow the mix to be transferred to CD if needed. When it came to [...]
We're twee as coitus,So, headbangers, bite us. . .Oddly enough I was in the act of composing lyrics for a possible Tullycraft song when out of the blue arrives word of a forthcoming 21-song salute to the much-beloved Seattle band. (Some of that's apocryphal, but I gotta start these blogposts somewhere.) Due to drop 14 September and named after the final song on the album, Wish I'd Kept A

I'm sure most of you are aware that today is the summer solstice. The day when the sun stands still. The longest day of the year when the summer is at its brightest. Todays solstice has certainly lived up to it's billing so far, it's been yet another fantastic day weather wise. So to celebrate the summer getting into full swing and the beginning of the long, long summer nights, barbecues and parties here is a list of summer based tracks i had lying around on the laptop. [...]

>> Delightful Minneapolis-based noise pop duo Red Pens have it, and they are about to share it, and it is great. The act's full-length debut Reasons has a high anthem quotient and is packed with fizzing pop songs constructed out of drums, guitar and vocals. And then the whole shebang is swathed in dense, "Sister Ray"-ish fuzz. And while using The Velvet Underground as a reference point these days has sort of lost all meaning (ditto for Sonic Youth and The Beatles : virtually meaningless, people), it isn't entirely off-base either. [...]
We just found out today that one of our favorite British bands, The Manhattan Love Suicides, are splitting up. We'll not do their name, but we're very, very sorry to see them go. By all means, check out the incredible "Kessler Syndrome" over at the Italian blog, Polaroid. The Manhattan Love Suicides - Kessler Syndrome - PolaroidAnd in case you missed them, here are some previous TMLSes we've

Some bands form, and they [...]

Yes, it officially begins. . .right about now: the South by Southwest Music Festival. Even from afar we feel the excitement. We've plunged into our archives to pull out some primo offerings for SXSW 2009 bands who either didn't post songs at the official SXSW website this year or perhaps previously made available tunes we like an ooch better. Probably shouldn't keep saying this, but, yes, we have

Headquartered down the I-5 in Portland, Oregon, Magic Marker is getting ready to turn ten years old. Ten years may not seem like much, but for a record label it is no small feat. Magic Marker is run by Curt and Mark, two music obsessed gentlemen who have over the last ten years built quite a fine little record label, consistently putting great record after great record. I think they may have been a bit bewildered when I asked them what it takes to run a successful label, but in the world of indiepop [...]

Gig Of The Week - Vivian Girls - Brixton Windmill Brooklyn's Vivian Girls have had a whirlwind 2008. Recently named in Rough Trade's 50 albums of 2008 (#9, no less), the band follows support slots with Deerhunter, Fucked Up and Love is All over in the States with a couple of shows here in London. The first is the peach, set in the dark, cramped surroundings of Brixton's tiny Windmill venue. The sound is resolutely lo-fi, with hints of Sarah Records influence along with classic girl group vs Jesus And Mary Chain noise. So [...]

Today I'm thankful for The Manhattan Love Suicides . Jonny Boy (mp3) Suzy Jones (mp3)

>> When we last checked in on British noise-pop dynamos The Manhattan Love Suicides here in April, the Leeds-based foursome had just issued its Clusterf*ck 7" EP. And at the time we advised folks to watch EMusic and wait for the four songs to show up in the handy MP3 format, because digitizing vinyl is wicked frustrating, yeh. After that we forgot all about the EP until today, when a MySpace alert notifified us that the band had just uploaded a new track from a recently issued compilation titled Burnt Out Landscapes . [...]

Adam John Miller = The Medusa Snare The Medusa Snare is the fantastic solo recording project of Adam John Miller of the Manhattan Love Suicides. The cool thing is that it doesn't just sound like Manhattan Love Suicides 2, but more along the lines of early 90s American indie rock – not surprising though, as his list of influences ranges from The Clean to Galaxie 500 to Guided by Voices – even to Jeff Mangum. The Medusa Snare's Cinderella EP will be out soon-ish on – you guessed it – [...]
