The Mantles - "Don't Lie" Back from their first US tour, The Mantles celebrate the release of their self-titled full length (out now on Siltbreeze ) at the Eagle on Thursday (8pm, $tba). The album was recorded by Greg Ashley and you can stream a bunch of their jangle/psych-rock/pop songs on MySpace . Read more in a great article over at the Guardian. Grass Widow and Yellow Fever (Austin) support at the release show.
Taking a few pages out of the mid-80's jangle pop underground. pre-grunge Midwestern ruckus and the Flying Nun-era New Zeeland crew, The Mantles are one more reason San Francisco's staying vital. Eschewing a some of their contemporaries leans towards lo-fi fuzz in favor of a trebly ring of strings and faded Kodachrome production courtesy of Greg Ashley, the band stomps, swings and shuffles aloofly smoking cigarettes in the corner booth. They might not be treading the most original of waters but they seem to have found just the right balance of past lives to inhabit on their Siltbreeze debut. [...]
Macht euch selber ein Bild: The Mantles - Don't Lie

I'm a bit surprised at how little attention the great new debut LP from San Francisco 's the Mantles has received of late (aside from some message board props and the occasional breathless, spot-on blog post ). The band makes hazy, vaguely psychedelic, and consistently awesome garage pop that recalls the Chills and other assorted '80s Dunedin Sound disciples. Here's the original version of album standout " Don't Lie ;" The Mantles is out now Siltbreeze . mp3: [...]

The 13th Annual Mission Creek Music Festival kicks off today in San Francisco with some pretty exciting names. Having a long standing record at breaking new and exciting acts over the years, MCM Fest is still delivering some of the best in the Bay and International acts. Today we have The Aerosols with Dream Date, My First Earthquake , and Sonny & The Sunsets at Knockout, Collosal Yes with The Love Dimension , 123 Picnic , and Nick Jaina at El Rio, darwinsbitch [...]

New 73 fever continues with The Mantles limited run on Mt St Mtn - which you should go buy right now before they are all gone. Despite having sort of a weak show when I saw them live a while back, they always end up writing solid 60's sounding garage. Nice and fuzzy, just the way we like it. I guess maybe I'm being harsh about having a weak show. I can't expect everyone to smash their amps and freak out like the world is ending. I think that would even seem out of place with [...]

Take it or Leave it MySpace Sites: Sir Lord Von Raven The Mantels The Fling

The annual Budget Rock Showcase takes over the The Stork Club in Oakland this weekend for "the West Coast's longest running festival for trashy, out of tune (formerly known as 'garage') wacked out music otherwise ignored by the Indie Rock Establishment." With over thirty bands playing over four nights, there's a lot to check out, including some quality local bands like Sir Lord Von Raven (a newish psych rock band featuring former members of The Time Flys and The Gris Gris), The [...]

Back to play shows in the Bay Area for the first time since early May, Skygreen Leopards will be performing at Bottom of the Hill this Thursday, October 9. Since starting out as a duo of Glenn Donaldson, co-founder of the Bay area experimental folk label Jewelled Antler , and Donovan Quinn, Skygreen Leopards have gone through somewhat of a metamorphosis after recording five full-length albums and one EP, but remain, as they claim, "California's family band." Skygreen Leopards - "Let Me Grow In Your [...]

The only things I know about The Mantles is that they are from San Francisco and that they make pop music the way I like it. Fuzzy, reverby and why don't you throw in a hint of garagey 60's psych while you're at it? Kind of reminds me of the first Outrageous Cherry record I liked so much. Here's a track off their new (first?) 73 on Dulc-I-Tone . Limited with a hand-screened cover, get 'em before they're gone. The Mantles - Trouble In The Streets
