Dam Mantle provide a delicate little crackly, whoo whoo remix of Cymbals. It's my wedding anniversary today and this is just the sort of thing for such a day. I feel sure that the crackly start which I love, she will hate. The whoo whoos I think sweet, she will think annoying. This could well end up on the banned list. Such is the course of love. Cymbals - Summer Escaping (Dam Mantle's Micro Edit) A remix from Glasgow's Dam Mantle of 'Summer Escaping' by CYMBALS. 'Summer Escaping' is taken from CYMBALS debut [...]
This week kicks is the official first week of "Summer" culturally, albeit Summer actually begins sometime late June, I think. Anyhow, since festival season is almost here, it's time to start training. Let's see how many of these you can do this week! Get your ear plugs ready! Thursday, May 26th Noah & The Whale, [...]

Mixtape: SF Popfest 2011 (Episode #249) By now, you've hopefully had a chance to sample some of the many exciting bands partaking in this year's San Francisco Popfest , which runs from this Wednesday to [...]
This coming Memorial Day weekend (May 25th - 29th) marks another wonderful line-up with the always original San Francisco Popfest . The great thing about SF Popfest is that every show boasts an impressive and nearly unfamiliar mess of bands from all over the world. The true indie rock fest will be featuring bands from the UK's C-86 movement, K Records of the Pacific Northwest, SF/DC indie-brainchild Slumberland Records. Even our own Blackbird Blackbird and The Mantles along with rising VA duo, Eternal Summers . Needless to say, [...]

Crystal Stilts Upon hearing about Crystal Stilts coming to the Rickshaw Stop, I was pleased to find out that the feature and opening acts would be local talent. And good local acts at that. You seriously can’t go wrong with The Mantles and Angel Island opening for one of the more interesting reverb heavy lo-fi bands to come out of Brooklyn. It was a mini-showcase of the finest in Bay Area based jangle-pop for an audience that may not otherwise be familiar with. The [...]

Dam Mantle :: Movement Dam Mantle is movie music. Dam Mantle is Jurassic Park meets Open Wyoming Highway. How I really feel about Dam Mantle:

Live This Month: May 2011 In Live This Month , we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. May features a couple of local festivals - S.S. Records' ten-year anniversary celebration and SF Popfest (which we'll be discussing later this month in a separate mixtape) - as well as the usual slate of touring bands coming through town. Veterans like Cass McCombs and The Raveonettes both recently put out what might be the best albums of [...]

For a while now, the music coming out of the Bay Area has been hovering around some level of greatness. Bands like Sonny and The Sunsets, Thee Oh Sees and The Fresh and Onlys—all written about in a recent New York Times article —play music that defies contemporary fads, standards, and to a degree, interference from computers: it's classic in every sense of the word, as if plucked right out of San Francisco during the sweet pop and psychedelic-infested 1960s via some sort of slipstream in the fabric of time. And these bands, along with the Girls [...]
The Mantles have been fairly quiet since their 2010 Mexican Summer EP release, so its nice to hear this teeth-rotting bit of 70s pop show up on a new 73 from the French label SDZ. It won't blow your mind, but it'll spray confectioners sugar all over it and then roll it in brittle chips. [...]

Its been awhile since we heard from San Fran's Mantles, but now they have a syrupy sweet 7-inch out on French Label SDZ . It's a breezy-easy one, fitting for the ongoing stretch into the late afternoon. The Mantles - Raspberry Thighs [ via ]

SDZ , the French label that (along with Les Disques Steaks) brought us Les Bellas record from last year is back with two very worthy 7-inch singles that are well worth paying trans Atlantic shipping costs to get your hands on. The Mantles sound like they could be on Flying Nun, but since they're from California, that would be impossible. They've taken their jangly Byrds influenced sound to a number of labels over the years including Siltbreeze, Slumberland and Mexican Summer. Their latest single lands in France and the A-side [...]

Tweet Editor's Note: We thought to welcome The Mantles back to San Francisco, fresh from their UK tour with Nodzzz, with a short interview. Big things happened abroad - as you'll read below - and the band plays their homecoming gig Friday at the Knockout with Wrong Words, LENZ and Wet Illustrated to celebrate their "Raspberry Thighs" 7-inch out now ( more on that release here ). Read on for a fun conversation between drummer Virginia Weatherby and guitarist Mike Oliveres [...]

In a music world full of sub-genres, electronic music seems more stacked than most areas. Trance, electro, witch house, regular house, dub-step, post-dub-step, whatever. For me, who is not an electronic connoisseur by any means, an easy dividing line is the kind that people dance to, and the kind people stare at. I'm sure both Gold Panda and Dam Mantle could be the former, but at the Troubadour on Sunday night, they were clearly the latter. Which is fine by me, as I am much better at standing still and staring than dancing. On top of their musical [...]

Derwin Panda has spent most of his musical career churning out remixes and EPs – short, attention grabbing numbers – only recently emerging, at the dawn of his fourth decade, as a gifted compositionist in his own right. On his 2010 debut LP, Lucky Shiner , the producer known as Gold Panda undertook a startling shift, crafting a patient, emotionally evocative suite of remarkably cohesive tunes. Without a doubt, the album has its ass-shaking moments, but it clearly shows Gold Panda putting his talents toward another end. This presented a rather curious problem when it comes time [...]

Here is a round-up from round the internet and in-box of some big tunes, covers and new stuff that should brighten up the weekend. We have big hitters White Denim , Glasvegas , and Fucked Up , visceral garage rock from the Mantles and Liminanas , swelling orchestral indie from Dengue Fever and the Windupdeads , new folk rock (watch out Mumfords ) from up and coming Son of Eagle , and covers of Joanna Newsom by Lawrence & Leigh and a gorgeously [...]

The Mantles - Raspberry Thighs 7" One of our favorites is back with another great double shot of frayed and frazzled pop for European imprint SDZ. The Mantles showcase both their laid back pop impulses, on the A-Side's sunny strummer, and their more frantic pop chops on the B-Side's more Kiwi-Pop leaning "Roman Hat". Just as instantly enthralling as anything off of last year's Pink Information EP, this single is just another great step in the band's continued effort to build a spotless catalog. Highly recommended that you pick one up! [...]
