Let me say this: my love of the new garage rock revivalist sect is starting to wane. Quite honestly, I skimmed this new psych/garage track from previously unheard of by me band Mantles only caught my attention because of their, and my, homeward location - San Francisco. As I listen to it now, I'm interested still, [...]

variations on a theme? not om. not hadyn. just that i've got a pile of this-kind-of-thing mooching desk space right now; from the ever reliable in the red , is john dwyers newest as thee oh sees ; slightly surprisingly from de stijl , the (overly?) perky pens record; and the vivian girlsish rocket-spunk conciseness of brilliant colors on slumberland . all good in their own way. but [...]

DAVE! That's me......fart.....I am still alive, not that anyone gives a shit. Other than possibly my mom and the 4 other people that write for this blog. Anywayyyy...time for some music talk rather than more of my self deprecating diarrhea of the mouth. I fucking am borderline creepy (scratch that....that statement now throws me into the realm of creepy) obsessed with The Mantles . They....fucking....annihilate my face holes. The Mantles sound like if The Beatles (who are fucking over-rated...FACT), and The Undertones, and The 13th Floor Elevators and everything you love about scuzzy rock had a [...]
Apologies for the lack of posts for the past several days. Let's just put that all behind us and just say I was missing, when in fact I was just doing too much outside of this. Grizzly Bear premiered the second video from this year's oft-blogged album Veckatimest for "Ready, Able." The video, directed by Allison Schulnik , features the eternally creepy art-forms of stop-motion animation and clay-mation. And yet, somehow, those creepy things are displayed in an even creepier than normal fashion, with clay blended together to garbage-tinged mess. [...]
I found the great fan video over at Gorilla vs. Bear for San Francisco garage rockers The Mantles. The song is called "Don't Lie" and uses footage from the 1973 film Paper Moon. Enjoy!

Sometimes just blurting out what you think is more fun than actually thinking things through and formulating an opinion. I was down in the basement tonight listening to records and what follows are my stream of conscious reviews of what I listened to. (Slumberland/Dulc-i-Tone) Mantles - Bad Design - Cave-like rock, reverb vocals (looking forward to this trend winding down). Nice guitar solo. This as poppy as Don't Lie, the best song on their album that came out on Siltbreeze. Mantles [...]

The Mantles - "Bad Design" Hot off the heels of their Siltbreeze full-length, The Mantles are back from tour with a limited edition 73 on Slumberland / Dulc-i-Tone , and a great show Saturday night at the Hemlock Tavern (9:30pm, $8). Seriously, Mantles, Finches , Little Wings ? That's a hell of a lineup.
The Mantles are a San Fran band, one which seems to be one of the few lo-fi bands I'm listening to at the moment. The change in direction happened rather dramatically, but I now find myself craving music that has a focus on production, along with experimenting boundaries. The Mantles don't make the kind of [...]

The "In the Know" series features the latest and greatest MP3s circling the web. If you think you've got a tip we should know about email us at vaguepanther(at)strangerdance. com. Field Music - "Measure" After surviving rumors of a split-up, Field Music has confirmed plans to release a 20-track album in the earlier part of 2010. Our first listen is the title track, "Measure," which features some nice string work [...]

Slumberland just released a new limited 7" from San Francisco 's the Mantles , featuring two exclusive new songs not available on the band's awesome self-titled LP (out now on Siltbreeze ). Here's the a-side, which the label says "has the lazy drive of a 'tougher' Bats -- hungover with a shot voice and a negative attitude." But like the group's other undeniable single , it somehow manages to feel almost anthemic in its hazy simplicity. The Bad Design 7" is limited to 300 copies on "all swirly [...]

This weekend celebrates the 8th annual Operation: Restore Maximum Freedom festival coordinated by Sacramento/Davis' community radio station, KDVS . In past years the all-day showcase has featured Thee Oh Sees , Religious Girls and Lucky Dragons . This year's wide variety includes The Mantles , Sacramento's punk band The Four Eyes and the electronic experimental performer Mom . The out-of-town band likely to turn heads is Austin's YellowFever (Austin), quaint female-led surf pop with the occasional [...]

Here are some tracks to tempt you for the end of September. If you like any, go spend some of your wages on the music!First up is the mysterious, fractured, ambient goth of Salem and their new 7" Frost. It's just as shadowy and reverb-drenched as you would expect. Imagine the Cocteau Twins gone bad!Download Salem - Frost mp3 (from Frost 7")Seamlessly crossing over in to the realms of Brit-Pop are
