For those of you who don't know about MAP, it's a collection of music blogs from around the world who band together once a month to shed light on up-and-comers from their home countries. It's sort of like the WTO without the human rights violations. For the fifth MAP of 2012, we can't think of a better pick than the lovely solo work of Hundred Waters frontwoman Nicole Miglis. Her debut self-titled EP dropped a few months back and highlights, among her many talents, her stunning vocals and lyrics. Check out her song "Stay Small" below and [...]

"I have a confession to make: I messed up your burrito." Brian Sella of The Front Bottoms is apologising to me about mistaken Mexican food, while we clean up the show, in the art gallery, inside a castle, where The Front Bottoms have just played a solid hour of the best singalong punk rock to come to the UK in a long while. As moments go, it's up there. I first got into these guys driving home from a bar in Philadelphia back in February. Jenny, our designated driver nearly had [...]

Time once again for a musical journey 'round the globe with the Music Alliance Pact. By now you should know the drill: Quick Before It Melts joins over 30 other international music blogs to bring you the best their country has to offer each month, then posts the whole she-bang on each others' site for all to enjoy. I'm very happy to be showcasing The Res t in the May edition, as they're spending the month slowly revealing their new album, SEESAW song by song (you can catch up on the whole story about [...]

SINGAPORE : I'm Waking Up To... Sze Kiat - Once In A While No man is an island, yet one gets the sense that the musical ideas that transpire in Sze Kiat's mind were born from the stillness of time. There's an unhurried approach to his songwriting and an intimacy that evokes a strain that could only come from a sort of crying out from some terrifying or forsaken place. Featuring traditional Chinese stringed [...]

After a week away in San Francisco covering the Citrix Synergy show for TechTarget, there's nothing more depressing than getting to the office and seeing a very moldy coffee cup. Anyway, here are some links that caught my eye while I was away, but didn't have time to write them up. 1. TechCrunch takes a closer look at Chorus , the content management system created by Vox Media that powers The Verge and SB Nation blogs. Sadly, there's no indication that Vox Media plans to make Chorus available for other [...]

Maps & Atlases new album, Beware and Be Grateful , gets better with more repetition. At a first listen, the record stands precariously close to being sonically overwhelming. The diverse, unconventional sounds—looped vocals, shimmering synths and intermittent piano work—collide head on with the band's traditional set of instruments. However, after multiple journeys through, the listener starts to parse the music's diverse elements, and can appreciate the multilayered and loaded tracks that comprise Beware and Be Grateful . Just as infectious as they [...]

Cymbals Eat Guitars at BV-SXSW 2012 ( more by Tim Griffin ) Staten Island rockers Cymbals Eat Guitars , who finished up a tour with Cursive last month, will be taking a break from the road for a bit, but you'll be able to catch them at a local NYC-area show on August 10 at Maxwell's with Mitchell Grey and Justin & Alina . Tickets are on sale now. It's their [...]

"Beware And Be Grateful" tenta ancora una volta l'impossibile: [...]
It's a week of homecomings and record release shows for some local bands. Kicking things off tonight (Tuesday), soft-pop group the Hudson Branch plays a record release show at Lincoln Hall for the new album World Kid. The quirky Maps & Atlases , supporting its second album, Remote & Dark Years , headlines Metro Friday. Finally, soul and R&B revivalists the Right Now , a band I really like, will play its own record release show Saturday [...]

Last night Sweetwater Organic Community Farm in Tampa hosted their annual Pesto Festo. For the past 20 years the farm has celebrated the end of their season by hosting a night full of organic food, music, and prizes. Despite the somewhat pricey entry fee (20 dollars a person) I didn't hesitate when I received the email about it. Sweetwater Farms provides an important service for our community. It offers members the opportunity to purchase seasonal, local. organic food as an alternative to the tasteless sprayed stuff available in most supermarkets. The farm also aims to educate the next [...]
Now two weeks out from the release of Beware And Be Grateful , Maps & Atlases have debuted a video for one of the album's tracks, "Remote & Dark Years." The song's a somber one - far different from the previously-featured "Fever" - but fits perfectly with the video's romanticized tale of car jacking and vandalism. Beware And Be Grateful is out now on Barksuk Records . STREAM: Maps & Atlases - "Remote & Dark Years"
Watch 'Remote & Dark Years' below. Catch 'em on their North American tour. Click here to view the embedded video. MP3: Maps & Atlases - Fever
