El 2013 arrancó con una mala noticia para los seguidores de The Mars Volta . Entre las causas de la separación estaban las típicas discrepancias musicales, que acabaron siendo irreparables. Cedric Bixler-Zavala, formerly of The Mars Volta and At The Drive-In, has launched a brand new project. Zavalaz - which is just Zavala with an extra z - also features guitarist Dan Elkan (Them Hills, Broken Bells), drummer Gregory Rogove (Megapuss), and bassist Juan Alderete de la Peña (The Mars Volta, Racer X). They'll hit the road together next month for a series of shows along the West Coast. There are also plans for an album, which Zavala described as featuring "lots of desert ballad space jams, lots of harmonies, lots of lap steel [...]

On July 16th, Los Angeles composer Chris Schlarb will deliver his third solo album, Psychic Temple II , on Asthmatic Kitty. The follow-up to 20102s Psychic Temple includes his cover of the Beach Boys' 1971 Surf's Up track "'Til I Die", where he's joined by an eclectic cast of musicians: Sufjan Stevens , Castanets' Ray Raposa, and Cryptacize' s Nedelle Torrisi on vocals, and the Mars Volta' s Ikey Owens on the organ. Ex- The Mars Volta  man  Omar Rodriguez-Lopez  has announced the debut album from his new project  Bosnian Rainbows . Rodriguez-Lopez’s previous band confirmed their break-up a few months back after former bandmate Cedric Bixler-Zavala  released a statement  revealing his dissatisfaction with the group. Now, however, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez will release a self-titled effort with Bosnian Rainbows on 25 June via Clouds Hill. Listen to one of the group's tracks, ‘Turtle Neck’, below:
