With a new album on the way in March of 2013, the Swedish jangle pop outfit the Mary Onettes have a new single out titled "Evil Coast," which has a strong 80s AOR vibe to it. There's something about the glistening synths and groove that remind me of bands like Toto or Phil Colins vibe to it. It may still be a corny sound in some circles, but all genre biases aside, this is a pretty and well-produced tune. Maybe it borders on being a little nostalgic, but it's got me looking forward to the band's next album: Hit [...]

Labrador As predisposed as I am towards things Swedish, melancholic, and anthemic, it took me a little bit to warm to Jönköping's Mary Onettes because, well, their name is pretty awful; thankfully, their music is most definitely not. Their 2009 album Islands was a glorious thing , all Cure-meets-Bunnymen '80s romantic angst in stadium dress. And as happy as I'd have been to have more of the same, the band has other ideas. Their Love Forever EP released back in February [...]

Gorilla Cloud: One of the things I'm thankful for During the past five years, I have posted some version of a “Things I’m Thankful For” editorial, crafted with heavy influence and inspiration from Furman Bisher, the long-time Atlanta writer. Each Thanksgiving Day, his piece would run in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, including last year, when he 93. Bisher died this past March , leaving a void in the lives of those of us you set out calendar each year by his editorial. Without any additional pomp-and-circumstance, here’s my "Things I’m Thankful [...]

The Mary Onettes' latest single, "Evil Coast," can be found on their forthcoming album,'Hit The Waves,' which is out March 12th via Labrador. Take A Listen: Evil Coast from The Mary Onettes

My copy of The Mary Onettes ' limited (to 1000) pressing of Love Forever arrived today and I've been giving it a spin with my vintage mid-century modern record cabinet. Some records just seem to be naturals on a vintage player such as this, and The Mary Onettes is a prime example. Produced by Dan Lissvik, Love Forever boasts a departure from the band's penchant for the 80s. OK, so maybe I still hear a bit of 80s reference in there, but whatever. The point is [...]

Il 13 marzo esce "Hit the Waves" terzo LP degli svedesi The Mary Onettes da Vangelis to Whitney Houston queste le influenze alla base del nuovo lavoro secondo il cantante Philip Ekström . Watery '80s pop music, both underground and mainstream, lurks just beneath the surface of The Mary Onettes ' catchy "Evil Coast." The Swedish quartet, who is about to release their third album, is somehow both theatrical and laidback with stompy drums, washes of synths, atonal bells, reverberated harmonies and a guitar lead that continually asserts its presence. Check out the single November 27 and watch for the record, Hit The Waves , which is due March 2013.
Today's music makes up the last Quickdraw of 2012. Enjoy. : Madison - Sweet Life : I like the direction that Madison is heading in. She's still doing what I consider guilty pleasure pop, but it's got a particular focus to it that's rather nice. The We've Been Nothing EP is expected to be released on February 5 via G Records . : Guards - Coming True : This reminds me a lot of 90s alt rock, and I think that's why I find it to be a pretty great track. March 2013 will see the release of the third album from Swedish quartet The Mary Onettes . Titled Hit The Waves, the band has released the album's first single, "Evil Coast", and details behind the album. Listen to the new song and read details behind the album after the jump.
West Coast forever. [Stream] The Mary Onettes - Evil Coast [...]

Yeah, this track surfaced on Friday, but what better way to start off on a Monday than by listening to the blissed out pop from The Mary Onettes . Their at work on their third LP, Hit the Waves ( Labrador -March 2012), with changes in the music expected by the band; some of those changes are apparent in this first single. Sure, you can see the nostalgia remnants, but that hazy darkness birthed on their first self-titled LP seems a distant memory. Who knows [...]

We caught a glimpse of what's to come from Jamie Lidell last week, and now we have a single after a couple of days. The first taste comes across as if Lidell spent time in the studio with Skrillex. The s/t album will be released February 2013 via Warp Records. In other new album news, the Mary Onettes have announced the release of their forthcoming album, "Hit the Waves," via Labrador Records March 2013. The album is said to have been influences ranging from Vangelis to Whitney Houston. A hodgepodge of goodness if [...]

On March 12th, dream pop band The Mary Onettes will release their third LP Hit The Waves through Labrador, and today we've got an appropriately dark track from the LP titled 'Evil Coast'. You can hear it below.

With their new single "Evil Coast" Sweden's Mary Onettes continue the trend of producing remarkably consistent and satisfying wintry-pop. Their previous output finds them still surprisingly under-appreciated in the US despite still stellar albums. Today, we received the excellent news of the new track below and a new album Hit The Waves (due March 2013 on Labrador).
Stereogum Sweden's the Mary Onettes have released two albums (and a handful of EPs) of wonderfully mournful, melancholic, gorgeous, impeccably constructed indie pop. Much is made of the band's '80s influences - and you can hear everything from New Order to the Housemartins to freakin' A-Ha in their sound, to be sure - but it's not pastiche: their music is truly beautiful and affecting. I've gone on a few weekend binges, always in winter, where I'll listen to their records, on repeat, and nothing else. In fact I've [...]
