We all believe things come and go in cycles and if anyone is complaining about The Mary Onettes sounding too 80s, they shoud really search their souls. Swedes have a knack of tugging at our heart strings in recent years and its no different this time with The Mary Onettes. Being under Labrador Records mean their label mates include The Legends , Sound Of Arrows & The Radio Dept. Wonderful company. In all brutal honesty, they have not exactly changed much after their [...]
Not too long ago, LWMB contributor Frank Deserto shared with y'all a video and free mp3 from Sweden's The Mary Onettes . Well, we recently caught up with the band on their whirlwind trip to New York City, where they played four shows in five days. They spoke to us about the pitfalls they experienced in recording their most recent album, Islands (out now on Labrador ), all the attention being paid to Swedish artists in America lately, how they chose their name, and the sonic concepts behind their unique [...]

Does video art sap the life right out of musical lyricism, stifling imagination? I begin today's Radio Dick with my simplistic and probably naive assertion that one ought to still read words and not dive too heavily into visual culture. My thoughts have been weighing pretty heavily on this idea lately; my 9th grade class is moving through Romeo and Juliet with me and I can't help but notice the dwindling patience with the text, the lack of analysis without strong coaching from my end with visual stimuli. The largely thematic aspects of the play still garner interest, [...]

Labrador legends The Mary Onettes kinda snuck their album, Islands, up on us, didn't they? Well, hopefully there's an us in this scenario as they definitely deserve your attention. Back to the point, Dare was out, followed by Puzzles, more of the band's terrific dramatic indie pop, and then bam, here's the full length. But hey, no complaining really, it's great to have them back with another record, and this one might not contain the immediacy of their self titled record, but it's still a record full of wistful, immacuately polished tunes. [...]
The year 2008 is one singer/songwriter Philip Ekström of the Mary Onettes won't soon forget. Ekström recently took some time to answer a few questions about the band's new album "Islands," the trials that led to its creation, and the inspiration it took to continue with the release despite continual setbacks.

Sweden's the Mary Onettes are '80s radio playlists raiders of the highest order. On the best tracks from their second LP Islands , the band finds a wistful sweet spot between synthetic swell (everyone from New Order to a-ha) and new romantic swoon (the Cure, or even Echo & The Bunnymen). Last week, they came through NYC for their second time, to support this second album, playing three public shows -- at Union Hall (11/4), the Studio @ Webster Hall (11/6), and Mercury Lounge (11/8) -- and one private one at their label offices. Along the way they even [...]

Gunnar Bjorling I am convinced that somewhere within the Labrador Records offices in Stockholm, there exists a magical machine that issues mandates to bands on the roster as to what their next albums must sound like. For example, The Radio Dept drew "Belle & Sebastian meets the Jesus & Mary Chain" for their debut and then "depressed Pet Shop Boys" for the follow-up and The Mary Onettes , it seems, were told to make their new record Puzzles sound like "the Shout Out Louds covering Echo & The [...]
Woah, this is seriously one of the best videos of '09. So, so strange. I freaked out @ 1:40, guys. The Mary Onettes' new LP is Islands. For more on the band, go to themayronettes.net

After an elongated spell of waiting between bands, 45 minutes actually, The Mary Onettes finally took the stage at The Studio at Webster Hall. After the bands' opening song, "Puzzles", concluded, lead singer Philip Ekstrom pleaded to the crowd, "hoped it sounded ok anyway," as he was apparently experiencing some technical difficulties. A few songs into the set list, which was comprised of both newer and older material (Void, God Knows I Had a Plan), and The Mary Onettes started having a little fun, however, they might have been the [...]

Die großartige schwedische Indie-Wave-Pop-Band The Mary Onettes veröffentlichte am 04. November (30. Was vielleicht an den obligatorischen Vergleichen mit Bands wie New Order, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Jesus [...]

Hope you enjoyed the Halloween episodes! They were a bit more fun to make than the usual weekly episodes, though also a bit more work. I think I doubled my lifetime whispering by doing the "voices"for those. Our two-year-old, Sydney, helped me do this one. Their name might bring images of creepy puppets on strings to mind, but these strong contenders to the indie pop scene are entirely in control.
Oh Robert Smith, it's good to have you back! What do you mean The Cure haven't released anything this year? Of course they have, their new single is called 'Once I Was Pretty' - I'm listening to it right now! Do you think you can fool me? ME? I got my postgraduate degree from [...]

Recommended Show: SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2009 THE MARY ONETTES & THE ART OF SHOOTING @ MERCURY LOUNGE 217 East Houston Street Manhattan, NY 10002 $10, 7PM The problem with most of the shows going on tonight is not that they aren't good, but that they are rather pricey (Monsters of Folk at Beacon Theater costs around $50 and Wolfmother at Terminal 5 runs a little over $27, plus whatever fees might be added if you buy them online), so I've got to go with a reasonably priced show [...]
The Mary Onettes new album is out and it's as good as they've hyped it up to being. I have a couple of links for you guys to check out. The first one is a track by track discussion of the album done by the band. It's always interesting to hear what [...]
