After OCFF, I headed up to Cafe Dekcuf. Hoping to see Yukon Blonde, found out that couldn't make it because something happened to their drummer. In last replacement, Leif Vollebekk played their set. Its always great to see him play live as always. The only thing missing was his violin. Great set as always. Next up was The Gallop . A Ottawa band that has members of Brights and The Ethics. The Bulls/Celts was phenomenal; to get the casual hoops fan to watch a first round series that doesn't involve their favorite team, you gotta have a super competitive series that probably needs to go 7 games with multiple story lines, a few OTs, emerging young superstars matched up with big name veterans, etc. Check, check, check, check, check...Meanwhile, the Hawks/Heat series also went 7 which should usually generate national interest on [...]

We ease into springtime mode (and SXSW in Austin) with this fine new album from Raul Malo, Lucky One. This is the first album of original material from the Mavericks front man in about eight years, and fans of the big guy with the big voice won't be disappointed. The songs wheel from country thumpers ("Lonely Hearts") to swing with a little Latin flavor ("Moonlight Kiss"). Produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos, the songs on Lucky One get a big boost from inventive arrangements and fine instrumentation (including Raul himself on guitar).
