Well have no fear, we preview gigs here. The last time we heard The Mavyns play in the city was at the Celebrate Bandra Festival on November 13 , and Arc Asia, Pune two days prior to that in 2011. It's been a busy few months for the indie rockers, getting together their debut studio release, From The Tree Of No Ledge . The band has [...]

Making Magic Live, From The Console

Making Magic Live, From The Console Missing out on a big moment is so infuriating because you never hear the end of it. Fans of music get reminded all the time that they missed some huge event and unfortunately they "will never understand because x event changed everything." It is inconvenient that huge events are missed and we can't always be there but these huge moments are usually the culmination of a lot of smaller moments. Woodstock didn't happen out of the blue and almost a million people did not go to that farm in New York state for the promise of something, but rather a [...]

The Groovebox: Billy Idol

Amit 'The Groovebox' Gurbaxani on Indian bands and phoren inspiration. I can't think of the last time I read a music review in an Indian or an international publication that did not describe an act's music by citing references to other bands or artists. Comparisons to similar artists might seem like a short cut to writing about the music but I often find that when reviewers attempt to break down songs into parts, by say detailing the contribution of each instrument, it makes for tedious reading. To me, a "sounds like X " reference [...]

Live: The Mavyns @ High Spirits, Pune

Live: The Mavyns @ High Spirits, Pune Mumbai alternative rock act The Mavyns played High Spirits, Pune on Friday, April 29. We were there. By now, the fact that The Mavyns , with their synchronous haircut-era Beatles meets turn-of-the-century post-punk schtick, are among India's most promising acts is common knowledge. In a near-disarming timespan, the Mumbai quartet managed to create an identity strong enough for us to associate a particular type of concert with. What became apparent on Friday was how effectively Koregaon Park-venue The High Spirits is able to complement that kind of concert. Quite [...]
