[RSS Readers: See post to listen to audio] If you love the world of mailorder labels then look no further than the catalog from Brooklyn's Captured Tracks , beautiful limited vinyl only release with a diverse roster. I already have The Soft Moon S/T album in my top 10 for 2010 but thats just one of many releases that you should pick up. Permalink | Comment [...]

It's time again to look back and reflect. What were we listening to one year ago? Listen to the July 2009 Mix to find out... Downloadables: 1,2,3 Partyy! (mp3) Mission of Burma No Time, No Hope (mp3) Times New Viking Mickey Mouse (Demo) (mp3) WAVVES It #1 (mp3) Ty Segall Good Enough (mp3) Mudhoney [...]

It's not REMIX WEDNESDAY or anything, but this project is just too weird and downright outgoing to leave unposted. To put it simply, this is one remix album to rule them all. This story starts with the synergy of two elements: San Fran music producer " Al Lover " and the blog-o-sphere-approved record label Woodsist . Woodsist specializes in some pretty distinct and eerie music, touting acts such as Woods , Ganglians , and Real Estate . Lo-fi fiends such as Wavves and Kurt [...]

[if you're so lucky to have access to Spotify, you can start up this playlist of Captured Tracks-highlights while reading the blogpost. Most of these releases are also available in digital shops like emusic and itunes.] I'm very much into the sound of the Captured Tracks label these days, and I've found several goodies among their releases. My personal highlights have so far been Wild Nothing 's shoegazy poptrack "Summer Holiday" and the equally fantastic b-side "Vultures like lovers", Beach Fossils [...]

There is still something to be said about releasing a great single, and I'm not just talking about the A side... The Great Pumpkin favorite 73s of 2009 10.) Slumberland 's Searching for the Now Vol. 5 (Liechtenstein split 73 w/ The Faintest Ideas) Liechtenstein might be the show that I'm most disappointed that I missed this year, and this 73 would have made my top ten for "This Must Be Heaven" alone. [mp3] [...]

The LA-headquartered Dum Dum Girls is led by Dee Dee whom you remember from Grand Ole Party when she was know as Kristen Gundred (not a very Ramonesy name). Dum Dum Girls is also one half of The Mayfair Set . The fuzzed out prolific one man band Blank Dogs is the other half. Sub Pop will be releasing the Dum Dum Girls ' debut full length album, I Will Be sometime in late March (probably). The band looks back to the girl [...]

It's always a better year for songs than albums, and here's my list of Favorite Songs of 2009. I've stopped using the word "best" as that implies some sort of higher standard. People can argue that "Lisztomania" is not the best single of 2009, but they have no grounds to say it's not my favorite. Anyway. Most of these were actual singles, and the rest could've been and when making this list I kept that in mind. Singles are ephemeral; it's ok if you don't end up listening to them a year from now. But I think a lot [...]

Part 3 of 4: Last year in my year end round up of my favorite singles I wrote how the 7 inch single seemed to be coming back into favor. This year it went over the top. There seemed to be labels popping out of the woodwork who’s main mission was to gather up the best songs and put them out on little pieces of vinyl. To reflect the bumper crop of singles I’ve expanded the year end singles count down to 40. Like Casey Kasem use to do, we’re gonna count them down. I don’t think we’ll be doing [...]

And now another installment of Stuck In My Head , where I post some mp3s that are um, stuck in my head. Downloadables: Wet Gold (mp3) by The Octopus Project ( buy cd // buy digital ) Shark Suit (mp3) by UUVVWWZ ( buy cd or vinyl or digital ) Junked! (mp3) by The Mayfair Set ( buy vinyl // dl more mp3s @ gvsb [...]

This is actually a pretty big release week, with some great stuff out. A number of the things listed here have been available here and there for a little while (the smaller labels really play fast and loose with the whole "release date" concept these days), but recent releases (The Mayfair Set, Fergus & Geronimo, Brilliant Colors, etc.) are noted here for completeness' sake. And dude, those awesome Amon Düül II deluxe vinyl reissues I mentioned a few weeks back are finally out, yes. Beastie Boys - Ill [...]

Picked this up at the Woodsist/Captured Tracks Fest last weekend and it's spent a good amount of time on my turntable since. Dee Dee certainly stole the festival both in Mayfair and on Saturday with Dum Dum Girls, proving that even lo-fi can benefit from some stage presence. The first long(ish) player from Mayfair Set retains the marbled warble that seems to inhabit all of Mike Sniper's recordings but with some much needed fidelity finally sneaking into the vocals, allowing Dee Dee's haunting croon to peek through the window streaked melancholy. The band finds itself most engaging when they let [...]

Mike Sniper (aka Blank Dogs) has been spending a lot of time in his bedroom this year. And I’m not about to tell a rude joke. Sniper - the misleadingly solo Brooklynite - it turns out is a musical machine of real pedigree, whose dedication to all things drum machine, analogue synth and reverb guitar has sent Blank Dogs and his side project, The Mayfair Set, leaping into New Ears’ sweaty lap. As he freely admits to being "an avid conspiracy theory junkie" you'd be forgiven for thinking that he was barking mad. [...]

[mp3] Woods: "To Clean" Um. So, yeah. Continuing with the summer mood enhancer theme, is this pretty much amazing festival coming 4th of July weekend in New York. Holidays in the city are usually huge let downs, but the quality of this Woodsist/Captured Tracks showcase is to much to even list in one blog post. How big a year are THOSE guys having? It includes: Woods, Blank Dogs, Crystal Stilts, Kurt Vile, Vivian Girls, Thee Oh Sees, Dum Dum Girls, Ganglians, The Mayfair Set, Real Estate and much more. [...]

No need to feel like a second class NY-er for not going out of town for Independence Day this year. If you're around, might I suggest the Woodsist/Captured Tracks Festival ? Two of the city's best vinyl-centric labels (with help from Todd P) are bringing together some of the best garage/lo-fi/psychedelic bands in the country, playing over the course of two days. A combined two-day ticket is $25, but if you had to choose one day ($15) I think you'd have to go with July 4, what with Ganglians, Woods, Beets, Real Estate, Thee Oh Sees, Dum Dum Girls, [...]

Ahh, what a week! Aside from the week-o-shows (most of which I was unable to go to), I've been getting some great new tunes from random bands I've been talking with. By the way, the Animal Collective show last night was their best performance I've seen by far. I guess the third time's a charm. If they are within a 200 mile radius of your barrio, do yourself a huge favor and see them. Enjoy this week's mixtape, and your weekend! The Yolks - I Do What I Do Liechtenstein - Roses [...]

Between work and "the move", my resources have been fully obligated. The suck is now over, and I should be back on the grind. Found some rad new Fresh & Only's tunes amongst many others soaked in murky garage goodness. The Outsiders - You Mistreat Me Intelligence - Secret Signals Lenguas Largas - I Feel Rainbow Bridge - Big Wave Rider Fresh & Onlys - Happy To Be Living Fungi Girls - Crystal Roads [...]

Vivian Girls have announced that they will release their sophomore album Everything Goes Wrong in September. The set will come via In The Red on September 8th. In related news, Vivian Girls have joined the line-up for Todd P 's Woodsist / Captured Tracks Festival July 3-4 at 979 Broadway Backyard in our very own Bushwick. Also on the bill - Thee Oh Sees, Crystal Stilts, Woods, Dum Dum Girls, Blank Dogs, Mayfair Set, Real Estate & more. Vivian Girls - Blind Spot [...]
