Well, technically Total Trash Fest 3 started last night at the Knockout . . . but back there tonight is The Flakes , Swiss Family Skiers and Poontang Wranglers (yes, you read it right). The multi-venue, multi-weekend festival will then relocate to Thee Parkside for three shows Friday and Saturday - with headliners Black Jaspers (Berlin), Mean Jeans , and Personal & the Pizzas ! Tickets to all three shows are available online at a cut rate. [...]
The S-25 Mix is short for The Sunday 25 Songs Mix, where we put together a mix of 25 tracks (sometimes more) we love from all genres and time periods of music. Over the past two weeks, we put out the Songs About Cars mixes, many of which were recommended by our readers. But this [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe
Saturday marks the last full day of the barrage of official and unofficial South By Southwest showcases. Yesterday, we presented a gigantic musical guide to the top showcases for evening shows (not even including daytime showcases), plus mini-mixes for our favorite showcases for Wednesday and Thursday. It's hard to believe that SXSW 2011 is winding [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

MP3: Mean Jeans - Brains Out It's true, FY!GT! is Mean Jeans HQ. Here's a rarity that appeared on the "Modern Gnart" cassette compilation from Portland's Gnar Tapes . I paid a dollar for this song, so you dudes better enjoy the shit out of it.
There's a good man who runs a blog over at everybodytaste.com . His name is Matt Carr. I can recall several times the guy has turned me onto something really worthwhile, so I thought I'd try to bring some of that magic in the following guest post. Here, Matt recommends six tacks from six bands I should have turned you on to already. Give a listen and go say "hi" to that dude at his blog. 1. Murder Mystery- I Am [...]

Ah, the Old Town: Portland's melting-pot of vagrants, geeks, frat boys, strippers and rockers. Join them all this Saturday for the second annual Old Town Block Party , in that parking lot over the road from Backspace and Davis Street Tavern, for a day of eating, drinking and dancing for a good cause. Last year, over 3,000 people showed up to help re-erect the (heh) "Hung Far Low" sign. This year, the Block Party is raising money for local charities Transition Projects , Rose Haven , Sisters of the Road [...]
I'm 5000, G, Portland-bound. See you next Friday. SFers can appreciate one of my favorite Portland bands, MEAN JEANS , when they play Thee Parkside tomorrow. PDXers can see my very favorite Portland band, THE FRIGGIN TAXPAYERS , on the day I leave. I have to plan these things a little better, smooches. See ya.

>Gather 'round, ye kiddies, it's video time! Castanets is one of our favorites. Ray Raposa's songs are sparse but full-sounding; experimental and indulgent but endlessly listenable; sometimes a bit lonely and creepy. The local songwriter—he's a bit of a drifter, but keeps coming back to Portland—has only gotten better as of late, and here's some video evidence from the Terror Eyes blog. Here we find Raposa at his minimal best, and the crunching leaves on "Some Kind of Fool"—while they may not seem intentional—are an entirely appropriate touch. Bonus Trivia items: What's Up's Robby Moncrieff is [...]

People all too often forget the power of a simple unpretentious rock and roll song. Thankfully, Portland's Mean Jeans haven't. I first heard the band at Jackpot Records a few weekends back as the excellent Ramones-esque sing-along "Let's Pogo B4 U Gogo" blasted over the store's speakers. And I haven't been able to put down the trio's November debut Are You Serious? ever since. Song titles like "2 Much Cocaine" and "Steve Don't Party No More" may seem ridiculous out of context, but over surging drums, power chords and the classic punk-rock voice of singer Billy [...]

MP3: Mean Jeans - Tears In My Beers Mean Jeans are a very satisfying band: besides sounding like fucking gravy, they put out solid releases pretty often. The new "Tears In My Beers" 7 inch is the newest example and is worth every penny. It's out now from the also consistent Trouble In Mind .
I've been slightly, and obsessively, irked with the critical world's love of placing the word "smart" in front of genres to separate them from their less intellectual siblings. "Smart action-films", "smart punk rock", "smart pornography" - we're a culture ashamed of our more base tendencies. So lets all be thankful for Mean Jeans. Chicago's Mean [...]

Mean Jeans - "Born on a Saturday Night" Extrait de Are You Serious? [...]

Upon listening to the first note of the Mean Jean s record Are You Serious? I knew I loved it. Its nothing new of course, but when a band captures the pre-power pop/proto-punk/post-mod sound perfectly, it just drags me in regardless. Mean Jeans do this wonderfully, and its not like there havent been thousands of bands that have tried this and failed (to me) but sometimes it just clicks and this is one case. Ill leave it at that, just listen to these songs and enjoy. Mean Jeans - Born On A Saturday [...]
Go check your record collection (or mp3 library) real quick and see if you have any of the following bands: The Ramones, Teenage Bottlerocket, Screeching Weasel, The Vapids, The Queers. If you do, then you'll definitely dig Mean Jeans "Are You Serious". If you don't have any of those albums, what the hell is wrong with you?Oregon's Mean Jeans play Ramones influenced punk rock (in case you didn't
The Ramones have probably surpassed the Beatles as the most imitated band on the planet. Mean Jeans began as a tribute to Ramones ripoff bands, but the Portland, Ore., outfit's debut album, Are You Serious? (Dirtnap), sounds like these guys sneaked into Hollywood Forever Cemetery and smoked the ashes of Johnny and Dee Dee. A [...]
"Do You Remember" is the first single by the new rock project, Sweet Apple , a band comprised of John Petkovic and Tim Parnin of Cobra Verde with Dinosaur, Jr's J Mascis and Witch's Dave Sweetapple. The power pop/metal sound of "Do You Remeber" is one which should be quickly identifiable to those who've kept up with the latter day output of Cobra Verde. Yet, with J Mascis in tow, you get the added bonus of shredding solos from one of the premier shredders of our day. MP3: Sweet Apple - Do You Remeber [...]
