Fred Neil wrote "Everybody's Talkin'" in five minutes at the end of a recording session in 1966 and recorded it immediately in a single take so he could take off and go back home to Miami. It's a great song and an unlikely standard that he probably never thought much of. It made him millions though after it was used in John Schlesinger's Midnight Cowboy (sung by Harry Nilsson) and was subsequently covered by at least a hundred other artists. Fred Neil spent the last 25 years of his life in Florida. Ratso wasn't so lucky. [...]

• A site called 10 Zen Monkeys ran an article on the 5th asking if the Internet has been good for writers, or if it has made them obsolete. The writers who were questioned appeared hesitant to state a definitive answer, electing instead to share examples of how the Web has transformed their careers. Typical solipsistic writer syndrome stuff. Several of the interviewees managed to plug their books within the first sentence! In my opinion (that's why you're here, right?), professional writers ("those who specialize in writing well") should still be able to rise above the masses who fancy themselves [...]

Unter anderem dabei The Veils, Rough Wave, Shout out Louds und Meat Puppets. Tracklist [...]
Not much in the way of new releases to talk about today, unless you're a big Boss fan, so here's a look instead at some new takes on a handful of older songs: The Meat Puppets - Everybody Hurts (REM cover) It's easy to hate on Stereogum , the site having become bloated as its popularity increased, but the OKX Radiohead tribute and new Drive XV REM project are two of the best things any blog has ever done. And the Meat Puppets [...]

I got the new Black Lips album yesterday and it is rad. Here's an interview and song they did on 99X yesterday morning: Black Lips Interview Tonight there are two great shows going on. I'm going to Peter Bjorn And John and Clientele at the Variety Playhouse. Equally as cool is the Meat Puppets and Atlanta's Morning State are at The Earl. Thursday night you can choose between The Coathangers at the [...]
The Meat Puppets are back. The Kirkwood brothers have teamed up with new drummer Ted Marcus and recorde an album on a shoestring budget in Austin, TX. Rise To Your Knees is a return to form: the psychedelic guitar riffs, the haunting lyrics, it's all there. Chris Kirkwood kicked his heroin habit and once again provides the rock solid bass lines and washes of keyboards fills. The Puppets have been through hell and back, splitting, reuniting, splitting again, and reuniting again. Will it last this time? The 2007 version at least came up [...]
Greetings from the land of the ill. I made the brutal mistake of rushing to kill the intense burning sensation which accompanies eating hot peppers with a cold glass of milk before remembering that my body cannot digest lactose. I feel like I'm on the brink of an terrible vomit-filled evening. Too bad, I was having a really good day. I hung out in Pasadena for a while, and then almost fell asleep in my notebook trying to write a short story. Have you ever tried to write something while half-conscious? I'll tell you right now, I started on page [...]
Monday: By the End of Tonight @ Cake Shop 7pm $5 Personally I'm still recovering from After the Jump Fest, but for those of you a little more intrepid than I am I'd suggest checking out By the End of Tonight at the Cake Shop this evening. The band is hard charging, full of energy, and absolutely explode when they get on stage. If that's not enough to get you hooked, it's only $5 and you may just discover your new favorite band. By the End of Tonight - "When It [...]

Will the real George Jones please stand up? Alright, well we heard a young and most likely drunk George Jones doing his best Elvis impersonation in the last post. The things a young artist must do for a few bucks are sometimes a little degrading. Anyway, George Jones is arguably the greatest country singer of all time. His voice is as unique and soulful as Al Green or Van Morrison. He has many imitators himself, but "Possum" is the real deal. There are hundred of CD's available by him and few box [...]
"You know if you see some DJ dancing ... he's dancing? Not a DJ. He's a guy with a fast Internet connection." -- Tom, preferring the throwback stylings of sore-backed DJ Ted Shred to the laptop chowderheads "He's got that friendly, super-warm, Everyman quality. He doesn't seem like a bullying blowhard at all." -- Tom on endearing Presidential hopeful Fred Thomspon "Is that the one on the horse or in the pool?" -- Tom, asking Mark in Toronto about his country's beloved lacrosse "If you're a giant robot, [...]
B esides giving rise to punk and new-wave bands, the era of 1977-1987 also birthed the bands that formed the foundation of "alternative" rock like Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Husker Du, and many more. There was so much innovation and change during this time period that just wasn't accepted by the mainstream media of the day. This era also spans a time period large enough that includes my uncle's college years and my first exposure to the music that would eventually change my life. I find it interesting that this is the music that made most [...]

Editor's note: Today is the first official day of summer. That always makes me sad because it means that from here on out, everything begins to wind down and shorten. But hey, let's not dwell on it. Summer is here and it seemed only right to include a summer songs post to celebrate. The latest comes from Los Angeles writer Daniel Chamberlin . I've known Dan ever since the days when both of us were at URB Magazine and he was definitely some of the editors I've enjoyed working with the most. [...]

I could have sworn that I just stepped out of a time machine. Meat Puppets are releasing an album's worth of new material? And you're telling me this isn't 1994? How long have I been asleep? More clearly, how long have they been asleep? There hasn't been a new music release under the Meat Puppets name since 2000's "Golden Lies," and even that can be called questionable considering that Curt Kirkwood was the only one of the original trio playing on that album. Before that it was 1995's "No Joke!" which wasn't the band's strongest album. Perhaps brother Cris Kirkwood's [...]
TGIF in a big big way this week. We got a new (old) car this week and all it has is the radio and a cassette deck. I'm waiting for the aux input we ordered to arrive (hopefully tomorrow) and since I haven't bothered to dig out any old tapes I've been stuck with the radio all week long. It hasn't been all that bad though. Here are three songs that I heard yesterday which restored my faith in the radio (well some of it at least). Thanks 89.1 WONC . [...]

A: My friend Scotty J. in L.A. tried to pull an admittedly clever prank on me for April Fools' Day . He first created a blog, The Truth About Dean , revealing "a few things Dean doesn't want you to know" (such as that I love to " sneak into stables and pretend he's Catherine the Great " or " dress up like a slut and crap Legos " [NSFW, sorta]). It's classic Scotty J.-style humor, which is to say it involves frequent references to bestiality, goat semen and sodomy. He even learned [...]
