As soon as James Mercer walks on stage and opens his mouth to sing the first lines of show opener Kissing The Lipless , and what feels like the whole crowd join in in unison, it's abundantly clear that absence really does make the heart grow fonder. In fact the palpable buzz around Kentish Town's Forum only serves to highlight what a truly special band The Shins are. Of course the term 'band' is a bit of a loose one in the case of The Shins for this is a brand new line-up assembled by [...]

Hitting Electro, EDM, Techno and back -- every week, Amperror (aka electblake ) will bring you the next wave of floor burners. It's not a sundae , it's a massacre. Welcome to 2k12, I'm not sure where it's going to take us (or maybe I'm not sure which road presented will be followed) but I'm pretty excited. Maybe [...]

A warm mix of UK style bass with some fizzly, floating synth pads, this next track is one the purest and undeniably good things I've come across in a while. I first came across it in Friendly Fires' Resident Advisor podcast (which was absolutely ace) and immediately had to stop listening and refer to the tracklist to find out what exactly I was hearing. My first contact with Matthew Mercer came about almost ten years ago through mutual friends. We immediately bonded over criss-crossing musical tastes and a constant hunger for new stuff to listen to. He was also an extremely talented composer with formal training and a real ear for tension. Early music was under the Systm name and fit in with the IDM sound of Autechre, Phonem, Arovane, etc. His progression into dance music was soon piqued by the glitch techno work of Akufen and the way that IDM sounds were given a new lease through 4/4. Soon enough he [...]
Things have been moving at a furious pace in the world of The Feelies of late, keeping in mind that things were moving rather slow for two decades. After hanging it up in 1991 for what would become a 20-year hiatus, the band has been on fire, relatively speaking. First came ...

Yo La Tengo, David Byrne, Fred Armisen ( photo by antonieta molina ) " Yo La Tengo squeezed more than a drop of good will from a sugarcube last night at Maxwell's in Hoboken. The band performed a last-minute Japan Benefit Concert to a packed room of sweaty record store clerks--all the proceeds went to Peace Winds Japan, a Tokyo-based non-profit organization helping those displaced by the recent disaster. But in typical Yo La Tengo fashion, they weren't alone: SNL star Fred Armisen sat in on drums for [...]

Electro house stud Mercer infuses Dr. Dre with Laidback Luke's hit 'Timebomb'. I have to say it is very catchy. The drop reminds me of something Laidback Luke would do himself. I am partial to this remix over any of the other one's that were released in late 2010. Check them all out here ! Download: Laidback Luke feat. Jonathan Mendelsohn - Timebomb (Mercer Remix)

So much music, so little time. School has really locked me down these past few weeks, and as the CD stack grows and the music folder expands, I often wonder come May what I will dread more - lots of school work, or lots of backed up music to write about. I know, I know. [...]

Hype band the xx to play the Triple Rock, Brother Ali preps for tour & P.O.S. interviewed.
You have to be pretty good to rise above the local scene's deluge of alt-country musicians, and Mercer is definitely getting there.
