Another weekly installment of HiFiFidelity Radio is upon us and with it comes a stupidly large amount of new music I've managed to unearth. Highlights this week include the brand spanking new Hot Chip single and some new Animal Collective as well. The show is available to listen straightaway above by pressing play or you can be a tad patient and download it from the mentalist archive on the right (oh, the huge manatee) We Were Promised Jetpacks: The least cool-looking band [...]

The Mess Hall's new album , For The Birds was sent to me a bit ago, and since I've been a huge fan of their work for several years, I was really stoked to finally get my hands on it. I first heard about them when they were opening for Kings of Leon and The Strokes. Since I dug both those groups at the time, I decided to do a little research on the [...]
So it's Friday and I'm filling in for Diamond Jim, as you all know he's a busy dude these days. Today, I think he is racing his drift car for the big bucks. He's got his mind on his money and his money on his mind. Hey, he's moving to the NYC soon, it's not cheap. So I will try not to disappoint the Hodge Podge diehards. We've got something fairly new and something new new. They both kick ass. If you haven't heard of either of these bands, then today is, for sure, your lucky day. It's also my [...]

The Australian Music Prize (The Amp) returns in 2008 to encourage, reward and promote Australian music of excellence. Now in its fourth year, The Amp is calling for all Australian artists across every musical genre to submit original album-length works (released in 2008) to go into the running to win the cash prize, which this year has increased to $30,000. Prize Director of The Amp 2008, Tracey Grimson , says: "The Amp is thrilled to offer an increased cash prize to its winner this year, thanks to the ongoing support of one [...]
I recently had the enjoyable pleasure of witnessing one of Australia's finest two piece act, The Mess Hall , for the first time in action on stage a few nights ago. I have to admit I went into the show without a lot of expectations for the band, mainly because I was more excited about catching their support act (and one of my favorite bands), The Scare , but that's moving off topic now. They surprised me, they really had me from start to finish, opening up with with possibly the best opening track known to mankind, [...]

Yesterday afternoon some shiny people gathered at the MCA on Sydney Harbour to announce the winner of The AMP 2007 Award . Modeled after the Polaris/Shortlist/Mercury/what ever Awards in other countries, The AMP is designed to reward and bring attention to excellent Australian records that fly under the mainstream radar. The winners for 2007 are, somewhat surprisingly, The Mess Hall for their album Devils Elbow (a record I still haven't heard...I suck). I totally had the Midnight Juggernauts locked up for the win, so I was pleasantly surprised when one of Australia's best live [...]

If there's one thing that all music bloggers can agree on, it's that we all love doing lists. So when Sean from a-reminder asked me to submit one for his Australia's Top 25 Bands/Artists 2006 project, I jumped at the chance. Here is my top 10 (with final standings in brackets): 1. The Drones (2) 2005's Wait Long By The River.. is one of the all time greats, and this year's Gala Mill comes very close to [...]
Blog Mixtape = Excuse to post a stack of mp3s. And they're all legalish! From the brand new Dappled Cities Fly track to an old Gotye song these are some of my favourite Australian artists who, for the most part, I had no idea existed before I moved here just over a year ago. I even broke one of my mixtape rules by using one artist twice...but Gotye is well worth it. Check em out as they rock Southern Hemisphere style. Thanks to Yellow Spacesuit and The Sandwich Club for links/posting the originals. [...]

mp3 : The Mess Hall - Disco 1 [ Buy 'Notes From A Ceiling' ] The Mess Hall are back at their favourite venue, Annandale Hotel , for a couple of shows before they jet off to US for a few dates. First show was last night, and tonight they will be supported by the exciting sounds of Bit By Bats . Jed and Cec were in fine form back in February [...]
