One of the more intriguing bits on last month's Bonnaroo 2013 lineup announcement dealt with this year's SuperJams. First off, there will be at least two SuperJams on "the farm" in June. Actor/musician Ed Helms of The Office will host a tent called "Bluegrass Situation." As part of his duties, Helms will also curate a bluegrass SuperJam with "special guests." Also, Jim James will front what was originally billed as a "Soul SuperJam" that will feature the My Morning Jacket singer/guitarist performing with John Oates of Hall & Oates, drummer Zigaboo Modeliste of The Meters and Preservation Hall [...]

As we reported earlier this week , Phish keyboardist Page McConnell kicked off his 2013 touring schedule with The Meter Men at Tampa's Gasparilla Festival in Florida on Saturday night. The quartet worked The Meters' Funkify Your Life into a bit of Loggins/Messina's 1972 hit Your Mama Don't Dance. Bassist George Porter Jr. handled the vocals. Check out a video from our pal thefiveguy ... More Page McConnell and The Meter Men Videos : Hey [...]
Did you catch Dr. John's freaky getup during the Black Keys' appearance at the Grammy Awards? Mac Rebbenack, in his guise as "Dr. John the Night Tripper" has always been one sorta strange cat - his records in the late 1960s were pretty bizarre and when you consider the period, that's saying a lot. But Dr. John is probably the king of New Orleans piano players (Art Neville notwithstanding) right now. In this video Dr. John, the Meters and Earl King lay down a funky slab of Crescent City, in the form of "Big Chief," the tune popularized [...]

Amerigo Gazaway is back with a new release today, dusting off his Gummy Soul hat and dropping a funk-heavy mix tape with a heavy hip hop twist. Freak The Funk! is a celebratory affair, with Gazaway in a mood to raise the roof a little after being tapped on the shoulder to appear at SXSW Festival in Austin. Over to the press release: " In honor of this monumental event, Amerigo has put together a [...]

Editor's Note: This is a repost from last year, or the year before - whatever. Mardi Gras is the final big blowout before the period of fasting and sacrifice called Lent. Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, is the end of carnival season and the final day you can indulge in those earthly pleasures we all love so much. Ash Wednesday is next Wednesday. Feel free to party as you please; here’s some music to help you on your way. Play ‘em loud, play ‘em often and play ‘em all year [...]

Editor's Note : This is a repost of an item we ran a couple of years ago, reappearing here to help get everyone in that Mardi Gras mood. The links have been updated and the Meters have still not made it to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Radio used to be magic. When the stars aligned, and the right artist played the right venue and radio was there, it could be just beautiful. Here's one of those moments: January 1977, at the Showboat Lounge in the Fat City entertainment district of Metairie, which is [...]
It's A Long Way To Tipperary - Little Green Cars What do you call a ponder pipe that just lays around all day? Mopey Dick. Badum. My first day in London, I was moping like no other. Woke up early. Phoned the prison. Spoke to Kailand. Told me her news - "They keep giving us [...]
The 2013 class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has been finalized, and Rush, Public Enemy and Heart are among the new members. The list was announced by Flea, bassist with 2012 inductees the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Also to be recognized in 2013: Randy Newman, Donna Summer and Albert King. Our thoughts on several of the winners [...]

Pioneering rap outfits N.W.A. and Public Enemy , electronic music innovators Kraftwerk , rock stalwarts Joan Jett and the Blackhearts , progressive rock titans Rush , and disco queen Donna Summer are among the final nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's Class of 2013. Also up for enshrinement are spacey prog rock outfit Deep Purple , piano man Randy Newman , funk band The Meters , disco group Chic , FM rock band Heart , Paul Butterfield Blues Band , bluesman [...]
In the same way that the Beatles were the undisputed kings among 1960s classic rock Desert Island Discs, Stevie Wonder owned R&B in the subsequent decade. Though the votes were spread out over four albums, Wonder received a commanding seven nods across eight different lists. Marvin Gaye (whose What's Going On? earned four mentions, including two for first place), the [...]

Last week we told you about The Metermen , a project featuring Phish keyboardist Page McConnell along with The Original Meters members Zigaboo Modeliste, Leo Nocentelli and George Porter Jr, and the group's pair of performances at B.B. King's in New York City on October 31 and November 1. Today, the band has tacked on another show to the run, as they'll perform at the historic Howard Theatre in Washington, D.C. on November 2. The members of The New Pornographers are very judicious when it comes to the release of their solo albums, putting them out usually in between releases and touring commitments for the indie-rock super-group. This fall the band's front man, A.C. Newman , will put out his still-untitled third solo effort, and first since 2009, via Matador Records. While the details of Newman's record are still TBD, he has revealed a full slate of fall dates in support of the record. Newman's North American tour kicks off on October 21, with a gig at Lee's Palace in Toronto, [...]

Three of the Original Meters - guitarist Leo Nocentelli, drummer Zigaboo Modeliste and bassist George Porter Jr. - will team up with Phish keyboardist Page McConnell for a pair of shows billed as "The Metermen" at New York City's B.B. King's Blues Club on Halloween and November 1 . Phish confirmed they wouldn't play a Halloween show in 2012 back in April when a summer tour date announcement proclaimed “No additional Phish dates will be announced for Summer or Fall of 2012." Tickets [...]

Papa Grows Funk returns with its most collaborative effort yet, as Needle in the Groove boasts a whopping three producers - including Louisiana legend Allen Toussaint - and a set of songs composed together as a group. The hope is that the album would take on an attendant house-party atmosphere, like a group of folks playing music as neighbors drift [...]

Over a chequered career history that stems from 1967, right through to their break-up in 1977 due to arguments regarding the way the name of the band was used. A reunion of sorts in 1989 soon followed a renaming of ... Continue reading
