"Why don't you just say you did not like it!" That was the response I received from a co-worker after sharing my thoughts on The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford . I was taken aback by this remark as it dawned on me that for the last ten minutes I had been pointing out everything that bothered me about the film. The truth is I quite enjoyed the film which is what made the experience so frustrating at times. Andrew Dominik's film is not your typical western film, although there [...]
We got sent this video from Andy Swan and The Michael Parks a little while ago, but I wanted to get it up today - on the 30th Anniversary of the Ocean Ranger disaster . The video is really well done, featuring a little puppet gent doing what I'm sure a lot of people have done the last few days - remembering someone special. Check out the music video for Ocean Ranger by The Michael Parks . The song is taken from the album Try Try Again which is available to down on their Bandcamp site . What is cool is the music video. It features a Andy Swan puppet made by Emily Jeffers . The puppet made it's debut at Canned Goods Drive/Music with Andy Swan at Raw Sugar Cafe on January 30, 2011 . Anyways check out this funny music video of Ocean Ranger .

Okay. After several replays of Aeroplane's first compilation, "In Flight Entertainment", I must say this is absolutely one of the best fkcuing albums (can I call it like that?) of the year. Great artists. Finest selection of dance music. I give it 9/10! Vito, you're a disco god. "In Flight Entertainment" is out now.

Red State If there is one word that sums up director Kevin Smith's entire Red State experience, it is "surprising". Everything from his Sundance controversy to his choice in genre has been far from what most would expect from Kevin Smith. Of course this has led to much debate regarding whether or not Smith's gamble has paid off? Clearly inspired by the fundamentalist at the Westbro Baptist Church, and the events at Waco several years ago, Red State tells [...]

Not too long ago, director Kevin Smith announced that he had finally obtained backing on the film, titled Red State , and that it would be happening soon. Since then, casting has been going on with multiple names added. Today, another actor joined the film, and that actor is John Goodman . The movie is said to be incredibly dark, being based loosely on Westboro Baptist Church pastor Fred Phelps and his extremist [...]
Here is part 2 of who I or you should check out at NXNE in Toronto. So this will be Thursday night's event. It is going to be busy insane Thursday at NXNE. A hard decision to choose on who to see badly. Let's check out who will be playing. Found out that from Thursday to Sunday there is going to be a " Live in Bellwoods " picnic series at Trinity Bellwoods Park. It is present by The Musebox and Humble Empire. [...]

Night three of Kelp 16 was the one people were waiting for. For myself this was the Kelp show I rarely get to see. Besides the acoustic folk-rock side that I am sort of used with from Kelp. This one was a big killer show and the bands that played were totally rocking loud. This was my first time seeing all these four bands play at Raw Sugar Cafe. The show was sold out. For those that couldn't get in, you missed out. All I can say is poor Nadia (owner of Raw [...]

Kelp Records is 16 years old. If only Think About Life was on Kelp, then they would be singing "Sweet Sixteen" for them. For those out of the loop. Kelp Records is a Ottawa based music label and its home to various artist like Jim Bryson , Andrew Vincent , Chris Page , The Acorn (who still calls Kelp home). Its becoming an annual tradition celebrating the label's achievement and to have fun with the music. This the second year now that the shows will be taking [...]
Kelp Records is pleased to introduce the "Blue Laurier" series, whereby you the customer get a fabulous deal on a digital release, paying under $5 (pre-tax) for a full-length release. When a record gets Blue Laurier'd, it will come down in price temporarily, often to celebrate a rare reissue or draw attention to a back catalogue item, possibly with new unreleased materials included. This month, we bring you the classic Detective Kalita (aka The Michael Parks) album Merry Hissmas or Whatever . Until now, it has only been available to close friends, as it was originally given [...]

Andy Swan is prolific. Not only does he release albums as a solo artist but fronts the band The Michael Parks (formerly Detective Kalita). Around this time last year, he headed for Ottawa and record a bath of songs for an album called Ottawa . It's a little outlaw country and a lot of roots. Thirteen lucky numbers. He may draw comparisons to Kris Kristofferson and George Jones . I like to think of him as a slightly less witty and a whole lot more sincere Kinky Friedman . [...]

Lately, I've been absolutely loving this little gem from north of the border; Andy Swan (also band leader of The Michael Parks ), is set to release his second solo album, Ottawa . Its thirteen tracks were recorded in the Canadian province bearing the same name late in 2006, and its set to hit the shelves on November 13th. The album starts out a little twingy twangy with If My Daddy Could See Me Now , but it doesn't stay there long. It keeps the down home feeling throughout, but [...]

You can overdose on too much of a good thing, but when that good thing is the down-home goodness and sweet songwriting talent of Toronto's Andy Swan , there are no negative side effects. Swan, who does double duty as a member of Toronto's The Michael Parks , releases Ottawa , a collection of decidedly country tunes recorded in the titular city late last year. If you're looking for an antidote to all the over-produced, over-hyped next-not-so-big-things ramping up to get their releases in before year's end, then jump on the bandwagon zooming up [...]

Kelp record. Congrats to reader J.P. for getting the guestlistspot giveaway. Is there much more to say about Kelp Records ? Over the last week, dial613 has typed the label's name on here more times than 'flecton crotch shot' has been Google image-searched in the same timespan, which surely speaks volumes. The 13th Anniversary Weekend lineup is below, along with mp3s for a bunch of the acts. Each show should be a great time, not only for the music, but the atmosphere too: [...]
