"These old men will teach you the true meaning of Fucking Despair," it says in the dark-humored bio on Boston-based Fat History Month's blogspot. This sprawling 6 1/2 minute track sure proves it. Holding down a Microphones/Mount Eerie vibe, the track undergoes several dramatic changes, all with wearied lyrics, sickly sung and barely heard. It's always evident that these guys see humor in the dark things, from the album art to the band name to song titles to lyrics like "my mom told me that I should get reset. I agree. But it's not that easy." Sure, life's disappointing and [...]
In human years, The Microphones’ It Was Hot, We Stayed in the Water is turning 13 this September. But those 13 years happened to span the aughts, meaning that in music industry years, it’s more like a few lifetimes. Originally released in 2000, a horribly awkward limbo year of identity crisis for rock, sandwiched between Pavement and The Strokes, It Was Hot is an artifact of sorts now. Like almost every Microphones album, it's one of the last albums of its era that’s sound can be reasonably described as “explorative” for a lo-fi analog indie [...]

Hello world! Lets get two things straight - one, I'm neurotic as hell, and two, I devour music like a fat kid loves cake, and I love me some cake! Now that we have that out of the way… The lost art of the Mixtape. Remember when you would spend literally hours recording songs to those TDK tapes and trying your goddamned best to not cut the song off before it was actually over? Not only the recording part, but just sequencing the tapes was an art form too. Lest we forget dousing them with black ink penned [...]

source At last night's NME Awards in London, The Smiths/Modest Mouse/The Cribs/Electronic/every-other-b and-ever guitarist Johnny Marr won the Godlike Genius award and celebrated by playing a set at the ceremony, concluding by playing The Smiths' "How Soon Is Now?" with Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones. (?) You can watch video of the performance below while imagining how angry Morrissey must be after the events of this week . When Radiohead released The King of [...]

Welcome to Backtrack, Sam Hockley-Smith's new Stereogum column dedicated to a remembrance of great things past, of important records situated in the middle ground between Legendary Reissue Status and yesterday's news. Backtrack will unfold as a crate-digger's journey [or: in relation to itself], drawing connections to previous stops, celebrating artists' seminal platters. It's borne out of love for the unrivaled power of the album format, and what happens when we think about great ones. First up: The Microphones' new millennial classic The Glow Pt. 2 . It's hard to explain exactly what happens in the [...]

Phil Elverum has released so much music lately that he's been forced to release a 73 that plays two of his songs at the same time . No but seriously, with two excellent Mount Eerie albums in 2012, the Portland noise-whisperer shows no signs of kinking the flow of his music with the launch of a sizable reissue campaign from his erstwhile moniker, The Microphones . Through his own label, P.W. Elverum & Sun, Elverum plans to reissue five Microphones album, starting with of the 2002 comp, Song [...]

For more than a decade now, Mirah has remained one of the most active and visible brands to come out of the K Records camp. From her first release, You Think It's Like This But Really It's Like This , on through subsequent solo albums, collaborations with Mount Eerie's Phil Elverum , The Blow, Ginger Brooks Takahashi and most recently her album with Thao Nguyen for Kill Rock Stars , the singer/songwriter has kept busy to say the least. Mirah, originally from Philly, but after having lived on the west coast for 20 years, has [...]
I ranked my favourite albums of the year for this week's Georgia Straight . The star of the list was Mount Eerie , since Clear Moon and Ocean Roar are my two favourite albums of the year. Here's a video for latter's title track. Sublime.

Phil Elverum and his Mount Eerie bandmates made it to Le Poisson Rouge last Wednesday for a reprise of the tour I saw them on a couple months ago. This was a "one-off" performance, not an extension of their tour, being played because they were also playing at NYU the following night (2 blocks away), practically for free if you were a student there, which I'm not, so instead I braved the traffic on "Let's let a million tourists come into the City to gaze up in slack-jawed wonder as we light a fucking tree" night, and saw them play. [...]

I give thanks again that long nights, Though they're lonely, Are lit by stars and end with suns That climb up and moon will back me up on this. Just look up. "Yeah, but the moon won't take you out to wine and dine!" Yeah, I know, but there here hand is on my shoulder. "Yeah, but every evening we still hear you whine and whine!" Oh, I know, but, like a sibling, I neglect her. But we have no choice. I'm hers and she is mine, And hers is mine, and she is yours, And we're each others. "Oh [...]
