Words by Rick Moslen I recently overheard some old lady on the bus spew some nonsense about how 2012 marks the end of the world. Maybe she's a Glenn Beck fanatic or the wife of some cult leader, but she was more-than-likely confusing "end of the world" with 2012's other important event: "the 30th anniversary of K Records"—obviously. Avoiding aging traits like receding hairlines, bedwetting, and excessive ear hair, the graceful label still holds its charm thanks to an array of hip songwriters ( Karl Blau, Mirah, Atlas Sound, Jeremy Jay ), [...]

Mount Eerie - Voice In Headphones The Believer : When you changed the name of your project from Microphones to Mount Eerie, you opted to reference a particular natural object in the landscape of Anacortes. Can you discuss the reasoning behind the shift? Phil Whitman Elverum : Well, for one thing, a sense of place is lacking in most of our American lives and art and music and everything. Everyone moves around so much. Kids grow up in five different places and return to nowhere. Towns are all [...]
Pac NW champion Phil Elv(e)rum, prodigal tape-hiss troubadour behind the monumental Microphones LP The Glow Pt. 2 and myriad Mount Eerie recordings, has a new studio product for your consumption. It's a 73 called "Distorted Cymbals," and while the sheet metal itself isn't all that distorted, the bass and guitars are overdriven and lock in groove in proper K Records fashion. (The track was recorded by Calvin Johnson in Dub Narcotic Studio, also in proper K Records fashion.) Also, Phil's voice still rings out like he's sharing some mystical truth he divined while sitting by a foggy lakeside, [...]

I'm so happy to announce that we met our goal in the pledge and thanks to all of you who pledged we will be able to release the last part of L.O.V.E next week. If you haven't pledged you can still pre-order the physical CD, T-shirts and other goods up till November 1st. After that the EP will only be available as a digital download. For this update I thought we'd grill the producer a little bit, so I tied him to his amplifier and made him answer all these questions... [...]

[Photos by acidjack] Phil Elverum is one of those elusive and otherworldly presences in music, who can take the simplest organ line or bell tone and build a surprising, hauntingly beautiful song around it. Best known for his work under the moniker The Microphones , Elverum rechristened the project Mt. Eerie in the middle of the last decade, but continues with many of The Microphones' themes and sounds. This show at 285 Kent, presented by the legendary ToddP , had the type of intimate feel that echoed the very bedrooms where Elverum has [...]

DONATE: Karl Blau's KELP Lunacy Advanced Plagiarism Society (KLAPS). My familiarity with Karl Blau's music is something which has come about only recently; having warmed to his contribution to one of my favourite albums of last year , and sought out some of his recent work as a result, its clear that he is a truly prolific, 'local hero' in the North West of the US. In a musical career spanning nearly 20 years, he's poured his time into creating a subscription series called "KELP Lunacy Advanced Plagiarism Society" through which he releases the music [...]

One of the most interesting local live shows this week has to be Mount Eerie , aka Phil Elverum , at the Berry United Methodist Church. Elverum, who formerly performed as the Microphones , is an experimental and truly indie artist who releases his own albums. Check out the video below to get a taste of his more recent musical style. The song, My Heart is Not at Peace , is off the excellent 2009 release, Wind's Poem . The church is located at 4754 N. Leavitt St.

It's been some time since I've posted on this blog and I am happy that topomodesto gave me the opportunity to put together a mix. In the face of algorithm driven mix generation I hope that there continues to be interest in crafting diverse listening experiences. What may start as a matter of convenience easily translates into common practice. Collecting and orchestrating music samples into coherent ideas may be perfected by professional dj's, but I find my interests don't take root until I search out the connections between songs and artists myself. And this invariably leads [...]
