Originally avoided the issue at SomaCow.com In this hour, we discussed pictures of naked ladies, local politic nutbags, and, even though I tried to avoid it, the horrible story in Arizona. Also would like to wish a Happy Birthday to listener FooFa , who tunes in damned near every week and always contributes on our forums at http://www.somacow.net - Hope you got laid, paid, or at the very least, a high top fade, yo. As [...]

As viewers and readers of national news likely know by now, Harvard professor and renowned scholar Henry Louis (a/k/a Skipp) Gates Jr. was arrested in his Cambridge home last Thursday , when police allegedly thought that the nerdy academic was breaking into his own home. I'm not here to debate who was right and who was wrong (though I'm sure you'll all enlighten me in the comment section). I just want to recognize something that most news organizations have been leaving out of coverage - that Gates Jr. earned stripes in the early 90s by [...]

Before I say anything I would just like to say a big thank you to Adso - I have not only really appreciated your posts but I have thoroughly enjoyed every single one, as I am sure everyone else has. Lets continue: I have just come out of a very depressing time of my life and I feel that you are the only people I can speak to. It was a time of confusion, sorrow, insecurity and most of all disappointment in myself. I am talking about the quarter life music crisis I found myself in since my [...]

Not exactly a slow news cycle. You have Farah Fawcett's death, another GOP defender of the sanctity of marriage confusing Argentinian tail with the Appalachain Trail, and then the biggest news of all: the death of Michael Jackson. As the news was breaking yesterday, I commented to Alec that I was having trouble getting sites like Twitter, TMZ, the LA Times to load. Since Alec only visits porn sites and ESPN, he had not seemed to realize that the entire internet was buckling under the weight of the MJ mourning. While Mark Sanford feels like the [...]

The Middle East Downstairs is one of my favorite concert hangouts, mostly because there’s a chance of picking up a falafel sandwich if you arrive early enough. And also it’s just cool to tell your friends “Hey, I’m going to the Middle East for a concert.” Not only do you sound educated about world affairs, but friends might also conclude you keep a Concorde jet in your back pocket just for such international-sounding concerts. Boston fans of The Fiery Furnaces , however, needed only to take the Red Line to Central for a local concert at an exotically [...]

ok. I realised I've been a bit slack with the new music posts. So, here is one right now. Simple. I'm really excited about this post because I don't know if I've loved every track as much before. First up is a local band, The Middle East. Yes, you read right. Local Band. They've got a track called Blood. It's one of those tracks that just sorta builds and build and makes you feel so happy towards the end. The Middle East - Blood ( iTunes , [...]

The Middle East - 'The Darkest Side' ( mp3 ) It's hard to overstate how good these guys are. I've seen them twice now and both times they had the rooms' fullest attention; the crowd hung on to every word and even get hysterical . I'm not exaggerating here, when they play The Darkest Side , girls in the front row weep. Whether they like it or not, they have created a very strong following over a very short time. It won't be long before the rest of the international indie blogosphere fall in line [...]

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart have just unveiled their summer tour dates and I for one couldn't be happier with their Boston show. Cymbals Eat Guitars will be playing in support of the carefree quartet bringing together two of my favorite artists of the year on one billing. The Depreciation Guild will also be performing. Although Australia is the smallest continent, I feel as though it may be one of the largest areas of untapped musical potential. There have been a handful of bands from the enchanted land of Oz that have grabbed ears over the years, but I personally view the Aussie music scene as somewhat of an enigma. All the more reason to book myself a transpacific flight and soak up the sounds (and sun) for myself. Until I do venture down under, however, I've got the music of The Middle East occupying my mind. Aside [...]

GOING OUT BOSTON :: the JAPANESE COMIC BOOK VERSION We try to get these out early in the day than this, but it just didn't happen this time. There is absolutely no shortage of things to do or great shows this weekend in Boston but we thought we would give you just one more option. Tonight at the Middle East , comic book fantasies and punk rock are in full effect with the arrival of costumed rockers PEELANDER-Z . [...]

Teeth Mountain Teeth Mountain were fucking incredible. Future Islands were fun as shit. Something weird happened when Dan Deacon came on. I can hardly remember any of it because I was overcome with DANCE FEVER. The only thing that vaguely sticks in my mind is that it was the funnest night of my ENTIRE LIFE. I'm sure my bro Ben over at Rebuilding Year will have more in depth coverage of the show if you're craving that sort of thing.

Ben Jacobs ( Max Tundra ) dances the way a toddler dances: jubilantly, effusively, and without a hint of self-consciousness. His arms stab the air as if in a fit, occasionally with the beat but just as frequently not. Jacobs spends his set imitating a whirlwind. He flits from synthesizer to keyboard to melodica and occasionally takes hyper excursions into the crowd. It is impossible to watch Max Tundra and not think three things: 1) this man is crazy; 2) this man is crazy; and 3) damn, this is fun. Like a lot of electronic music, [...]

On Further Review by NICK PARKER The Scene: The Middle East - 4/30/2009 SCORE OF THE NIGHT: The bands at the Middle East have to fight hard to be heard tonight. They struggle not with technical problems, but with a city transfixed by the Celtic’s triple overtime playoff fight. Bands come and go as the majority of the audience give them only glancing attention, between shouts [...]
