Wednesday, May 16, 2012 The lifespan of a local band is often quite short. The Midgetmen, however, have beaten the odds in an ever changing local music scene by surviving 10 years together as Austin's premiere, or maybe only, "slop punk" band. This Friday they're throwing their 10th Anniversorry (yes, that is the correct spelling for this special event) party at the Mohawk and celebrating "a decade of daring to be stupid." They've put together a packed lineup of local talent including several of my [...]

Amid all the hype and recent accolades, Cloud Nothings breezed into town, only to be pushed outside by the Sony Vita Lounge. The redesigned Red 7 definitely provided an awkward pre-show ambiance, but as we would soon find out, nothing was going to stop Cloud Nothings . Our evening began with the decade old Midgetmen , still doing their thing on the stage after all this time. They sounded tight, and as always brought a good [...]

So, by this point in time, Free Week in Austin is upon us, and I hope you're all out there enjoying the great local music our fair city has to offer. There's too many great shows and great bands to hit up, so I'm going to try and help out by suggesting the big hitters every day. The following list is for tomorrow night, that way you can plan accordingly: The Midgetmen (10:30) @ Red 7 - Good old rock n' roll from a band who've been banging it out for [...]

No, this isn't a small person tribute band to The Minutemen -- in case you happened to be wondering such a thing. No, this Austin-based band of self-proclaimed "slop-punk" is a six-pack of the good times. The same sort of rough, loud, and honest sounds that gushed out of '90s underground rock bands such as Guided by Voices, Dinosaur Jr., and Sebadoh is present here, like a time capsule of the best memories. The Midgetmen's latest LP, Loud Enough , is stuffed with crunchy, fuzzy, rattling, buzzing guitar riffs, shout-along verses and choruses, and even hits of jubilant horns [...]

If you're going to SXSW and Showlist Austin isn't on your daily list of sites to visit, you a punk. I mean it seems like so many sites (somes with real staffs and real budgets!) this year are copping Dan's style it's sort of embarrassing. Naughty, naughty websites. ANYWAY. Can't remember Billions doing a free day show in recent years, but here you go: We've got so many more shows after the jump, dudes. [...]

The Midgetmen were our friends who helped us put together the Donewaiting SXSW Day Show last year. That was a good time, right? They would love you and buy you booze if you voted for them in the Austin Music Awards. Do it .

The Midgetmen excel at pop-punk mayhem, beer-soaked bursts ripe with unapologetic arrested development: as they declare in "Three Chords and a Cloud of Dust": "Growing up is overrated!" The group's third album follows through on the sentiment, raucous and uninhibited. But Showpony also proves their most melodically controlled and, dare we say, mature offering yet. There is still plenty of rambunctious absurdity – a song like the 55 second shot "Bunk Sock" couldn't be more adolescent, or irresistible behind the garage swagger and "Blitzkrieg Bop" riffs, as the quartet paws, "I wanna take you out to the movies, [...]
I Am Also a Fan by Jeff Goldberg I recently purchased a 12-pack of Magic Grow ® Ancient Dinosaurs and dumped them all into a pot of water. Why? Why am I not capable of savoring a childhood memory by meticulously allowing each sponge dinosaur to individually expand from its water soluble shell, perhaps even saving one or two unexpanded sponge dinosaurs for a later day? A fitting tribute to my childhood, I suppose. If anyone had ever [...]
