photos by Jason House Great Gaylord @ the Bell House After a raucous, sold-out first night of Norton's 25th Anniversary celebration at the Bell House, the party continued at the Brooklyn venue on Friday (11/11) where once again the night was opened by The Nor-Tones ("Norton's all-employee band includes members of the Little Killers, Daddy Long Legs, Stalkers, Girls At Dawn and LiveFastDie playing the hits of the Norton catalog.")
Hymn No. 5: courtesy of The Mighty Hannibal, née James Timothy Shaw is both a highlight and stylistic outlier in the oft-turbanned soul man's lengthy career. Inspired one night by a newscast of Walter Cronkite discussing the growing amount of United States soldiers that were returning from Vietnam addicted to opium, "Hymn No. 5" excels [...]
Burn to Shine Atlanta slated for possible fall release
The Burn to Shine Atlanta house at 54 Moreland Ave. finally came crashing down this morning at 9 a.m.
While exiled in Berlin, Black Lips, King Khan and BBQ teamed up to form the soulful new super group, the Almighty defenders

Holy horses there's a lot going on this weekend. Pitch who ? Fest wha ? There are a couple obvious and worthwhile things, and a few other things that don't fit so squarely into the hipster box. Screw the box. And the tube. Don't stay home watching Doctor Who . That Shakespeare episode sucks . Friday. The 13th. (Chh-chh-chh Haa-haa-haa.) * The most interesting thing on the schedule, to me at least, is the first ever performance by [...]

Elizabeth Mitchell - "Three Little Birds" This is a song for kids. As I don't know any kids or understand what they like, I have no way of evaluating how successful it is at achieving its intended purpose. For this adult, the cutesiness of the kid's voice is a little grating at first, but then takes on a very different dimension halfway through the song. At 1:05, when the Hammond organ reggae opens up into a strummed family folk, the parents and the kid start into a call and response. Only at this point does one begin to hear how [...]

The brown western shirt with the diamond buttons that I'm currently wearing doesn't quite fit in with this post because it ain't bringing the funk. The kind of funk that makes you strut down funky Broadway. Back in a posting on December 21, 2006 I called What It Is! Funky Soul And Rare Grooves (1967-1977) the best box set of the year. That still holds true because a Doctor never goes back on his word. In these past few coffee infused days I've been doing a lot more listening to this box and it is better than [...]

The city of Atlanta has proclaimed January 12th Mighty Hannibal Day. In honor of this momentous event, legendary band the Black Lips backed him up for a short but sweet sold out set at the Earl . Michael Julian Bond, son of civil rights leader Julian Bond was on hand for the Proclamation and warm up band the Reigning Sound killed it!! Big thanks to Miriam for making the trek with me. Get In The Groove [...]
