New Zealand hasn't really had its turn in the indie music spotlight. Apart from Flight of the Conchords (New Zealand... Cool!) I can't recall many kewl indie kids out of middle Earth. But here's a band that should put Australia's much slighted neighbours in a whole new light. The Mint Chicks are an energetic power pop/noise rock act with a killer aesthetic and some catchy tunes. Their newest album Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No! charted right at the top of New Zealand's music charts. They've toured with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The White [...]

The Mint Chicks [ Myspace ] are New Zealand's answer to the pre-hype Arctic Monkeys : brash, poised and straight-forward experimental noise/punk rock. That's a huge, long, very definitive explanation, but once you hear their sound, it might make more sense. Besides in 2007, the Mint Chicks swept their way through the NZ Music Awards (the New Zealand version of a Grammy, I guess?), winning Album of the Year , Best Group , Best Rock Album , Video of the Year and Album Cover Art of the Year [...]

We declare, some of these videos are so new the code hasn't even dried yet. So sit back, press play, enter full screen mode and enjoy the latest offerings our ceaseless Internet scavenging has yielded. Highlights include a woodland monster, men in masks straight out of The Orphanage , puppet Kanye, and little tiny sewer nymphs (?). All good things....except the Batcat, that thing is beyond frightening! Mogwai - "Batcat" (above) The Coral - "Being [...]
New Zealand's masters of abstract punk rock, The Mint Chicks , have never really stood in one spot for too long. Their debut record, Fuck The Golden Youth , which featured re-workings of tracks from their early EP's, was a raw and chaotic affair. Their follow-up, Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No! was a highly polished solid rock collection of songs, packed with heavier riffs and more pounding rhythms. And now in 2008, with the group one member lighter and residing in Portland, have once more evolved their sound. [...]

I already wrote a novel about these guys right here , so I won't get too long-winded on the band's bio. Suffice to say, the Mint Chicks gave up notoriety in the small republic of New Zealand for American obscurity right here in Portland. This song, "Life Will Get Better Some Day," could well be my favorite thing in their catalogue. "Life Will Get Better Some Day" is, far as I can tell (still trying to decipher a few lyrics), a song about crushed dreams and the fallacy of wishful thinking. It's basically the post-9/11 George W. [...]
SXSW plans: The whole big BIGSTEREO family arrives in Austin on Tuesday. Please give us a shout for our telephone numbers if you wanna hang out, dance mad, be crazy. Rchrd Oh?! is dj'ing at NOON on Friday, March 16th at Factory People . Come out and show yourself and buy some new clothes and listen to some hot music. And I've had a few email requests asking for recommendations and where we'll be at. Generally, I don't know where I'm gonna be five minutes from now. And there is just way [...]
What I love about doing this part, is taking the time to recognise amazing records that have in some way made my year. I had no trouble compiling my list together but I did have trouble placing them in positions; which I still don't believe in because I'd like to think each of them are in top position in their own different ways; genre wise and what else have you not. It's also the time where I can give considerable mentions to new discoveries I have found but never found the time to make a post about because I was [...]

I'm excited for many things. One of them is always new albums to be released, another thing is seeing my favourite acts live. But one thing I'm not, is being busy. The Mint Chicks are coming up with another LP titled " Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No! " due out on August 28th. Their style of music is just wild but very well put together which makes me appreciate them so much. The album will be their second full length album. These guys will be touring very soon after the release, in [...]
