With The Mars Volta reconvened and readied for the touring of a new LP, and At The Drive-In reformed needless to say Cedric Bixler-Zavala's being kept as busy as that wonderfully ridiculous barnet of his is bananas. He's also in on this one: the sort of supergroup to come together after a SPAR cider too many in some Butlins chalet come sunrise, Anywhere also comprises legendary Minutemen bass monger Mike Watt and onetime Sleepy Sun-shine Rachel Fannan although to further dislodge Bixler-Zavala from focal point, we thrust some inquisitions over in the direction of fellow project progenitor [...]

[Photos courtesy of Robert Kidd. See more of his excellent work HERE .] To paraphrase the late Jerry Garcia, not everybody knows who Mike Watt is, but those who do really appreciate Mike Watt. Having long been established as an elder statesman of punk, post-punk and alternative rock starting with the seminal Minutemen and the inspired fIREHOSE , his versatility has allowed him to play with many musicians of different stripes and genres. He's a bass player's bass player; the go-to guy who you know will [...]
MINUTEMEN - The Glory Of Man (by MrGroovybassman ) Post punk heroes Minutemen from an undated live performance in France with the late D Boon showing amazing energy as always.

Somewhere in a Massachusetts landfill there's a calendar with the words "Mighty Fuckin' Hose of Fire" written on a then-upcoming 1992 date where a stop on fIREHOSE's Flyin' The Flannel tour was due at Boston's Paradise. Such was the excitement of my college radio/college band/college leisure time cohort. Their live shows raged - explosive displays of virtuosic exploitations of punk rock basics exploded into bewildering free jazz riffing and half-spoken lyrics. So is it time for a critical reassessment re affirmation of fIREHOSE ? Hell, yeah it is. To the [...]

Not only have fIREHOSE reformed for Coachella and elsewhere but there appears to be a compilation of the Columbia stuff on its way. This is a good thing, because while the SST albums were probably better on the whole, all fIREHOSE is good fIREHOSE. And besides that it will include the Live Totem Pole EP, which is not only hard to find but contains great covers of songs by Public Enemy, the Butthole Surfers, Wire, etc. Given that fIREHOSE is essentially the best bass 'n' drums in the world - the sainted Mike Watt and the [...]
Minutemen - Joe Mccarthy's ghost (by wattfrompedro ) Live in phily, on march 5, 1983. Today's D Boon's birthday. RIP.
Check out the title track from the supergroup's self-titled full-length.

Last year, the guitarist of acid punk band Triclops!, one Christian Eric Beaulieu, pulled together a thoroughly impressive super group of musicians to form Anywhere . Rounded out by Cedric Bixler-Zavala (The Mars Volta, At The Drive-In) on vocals/drums, legendary punk bassist Mike Watt (Minutemen, fIREHOSE), and guest vocalist Rachel Fannan (ex-Sleepy Sun), Anywhere released two limited 7" singles which sold out with haste. Now, the group is set to release their self-titled debut full-length on May 14th via ATP Recordings. Beaulieu, under the solo moniker Liquid Indian, was experimenting with acoustic Indian raga music when he [...]

Having this year unexpectedly reformed At The Drive-In for reasons of an exclusively financial nature and ahead of the arrival of The Mars Volta's latest LP next week, he of murky cotton candied hair or Cedric Bixler Zavala is to pop out another release this side of summer. Under the guise of Anywhere , Cedric can more precisely be charted everywhere contemporarily and he here joins up with Christian Eric Beaulieu of modest Liquid Indian and tripped-out Triclops! fame, Mike Watt of rather more substantial celebrity given his involvement with both Iggy and D. Boon's Minutemen, and [...]
The post-Minutemen band celebrate their reunion with an anthology.
Is it poetic pornography or pornographic poetry?

SST Records used to put together its SST bands on package tours and send 'em out to do Greg Ginn's bidding, er, I mean to play shows! And then a video of the show would come out. Here's the liner sleeve above for the full video clip below. Looking back on those lineups today, you're likely to think 'WOW, it must've been amazing to see these bands back in their heyday'. And maybe you're right, and maybe you're wrong. Some nights might've smoked and other nights might's been drunken aberrations or dope-fueled jam sessions. [...]

Lydia with old friend, Fender Telecaster "They're gonna feel almighty When I can barely stand I just tell them I couldn't turn down One more glass of the blood of the lamb." About a month ago, I had the good fortune to see Lydia Loveless and Wild Flag on the same day (October 29). I actually saw Lydia twice. She and Ben Lamb, her standup bassist/husband (not necessarily in that order) played a 30 minute in-store [...]

We Jam Econo - The Story of The Minutemen If you want to check out a wicked documentary, on one of the most influential underground hardcore punk bands of the 80's, watch this! Peace.

WU LYF is nothing, four dumb kids calling out heavy longings for a place to call home, two brothers greet two brothers and play heavy pop. I don't feel at home in this place, like your hearts drunk on kerosene and all you need is a spark. A lil' flare of Lucifer. Those four dumb kids from Manchester (but don't call them a Manchester band), England made their North American debut at Philadelphia's Making Time event last Saturday night (11/5) at Voyeur Nightclub. WU LYF (short for World Unite Lucifer Youth Foundation) has made quite the [...]
Watch Jeff Mangum cover the Minutemen's 'Themselves' for Occupy Wall Street.
Jeff Mangum surprised the Occupy Wall Street protestors late Tuesday night for an eight-song set of singalongs. I'm not sure if this makes up for the whole Radiohead hoax , but plenty of people were still excited to see the reclusive indie folk hero. Before you regard this as completely random, remember that Jeff was just at ATP and he'll play shows at NYC's Town Hall later this month. Perhaps you were on Twitter when we found out about the livestream; in any event, Jeff's entire set is here for you [...]
