It took me about five minutes to twig why the roads were so quiet this morning, before I remembered that it was Easter and that every other cunt but myself was on fucking holiday. Bastards. Of all the meaningless holidays we have, I think Easter might be the most pointless. Although I have to confess that when I lived down South, where the whole company shut on bank holidays, pretty much forcing you to take the day off, there was something rather good about having a compulsory long weekend at the start of Spring. Anyhow, as [...]
January 1942: 500 Wehrmacht soldiers found themselves surrounded by the Red Army on the Eastern Front. Suffering in temperatures of –22 Fahrenheit, marching through snowdrifts that at times reached waist high, soldiers began to lie down in the snow to die. Six hours into their escape they claimed they could go no further. Commanders made [...]

The Monochrome Set, "Karma Suture"

Huge, full-bald, lurching Mr. Bizarro approaches as you relax under a palm tree sipping a Pina Colada. He's wearing a 1920s bathing suit and carries a beachball in one hand and a coconut in the other. He makes as if to throw one at you, then the other, then let's out a fierce, unbridled scream like that of a scared baby. Your move... The Monochrome Set - Mr. Bizarro

The Treecast is so named because we purchased and decorated our Christmas tree this afternoon. It is an incoherent mess of all sorts of shite, stupid garish baubles, a weird peacock thingy and some foolish attempts at being tasteful which have been utterly overwhelmed by the utter cack which surrounds them. My parents always did seriously tasteful trees actually, so I would imagine they will be downright ashamed of the half-arsed mess we have managed to create. Actually, my dad is the world's biggest Grinch, so he won't give a shite, but my mum might be silently disappointed. [...]

I am not cold in the sense that the temperature is all that low, more in the sense that I have been just a little too chilly for a few hours now and it is really starting to get me down. Moan moan. Song, by Eeyore etc etc. Anyhow, Cellar 35 in Aberdeen was excellent last night - what a top wee space. It is basically just a scruffy basement, but they've got a couple of carpets down and sofas and the atmosphere is really, really nice. It helps a great deal that the staff were [...]

We're still three weeks away from the official start of the summer, but with temperatures in the '80s and Memorial Day Weekend upon us... close enough. So here's the first of a season's worth of mixes, made just for you. Having a little extra time for this one I redid it multiple times, tweaking here and there, and am pretty happy with what's now before you. Hope you like it. Cover art for this first mix of 2010 is by frequent contributor Kate Bryant [...]

You may recall my unexpected gift of 50 bonus downloads from eMusic a couple of weeks ago . I was 9 selections into my bonus downloads when I realized that I couldn't figure out what to download next. I'm constantly unimpressed with the indie rock selections eMusic suggests that I try, like all those bands with album covers featuring a folk-art painting of a sparrow perched on a branch. Man, that thumb-sucking, hushed-tones crap really needs to be banished to the same eternal $1 bins alongside discarded copies of Asylum Choir II [...]

You know the drill - you still have until tonight to listen to last week's Out the Other, which featured Rollum Haas and Ryan Norris of the Privates (and, between them, about every other band in Nashville including The Features and Lambchop). It was an amazing show full of gems from Ryan's record collection and Rollum's iPod - all kinds of stuff I personally had never heard before but that I'll be trying to track down soon. Go ahead: Stream the August 10 edition of Out the Other Below is a playlist [...]

On being asked if I'd like to write a short article about my favourite album of all time I immediately knew that it was Marquee Moon by Television. Then the problems started… Marquee Moon already tops the 'top 100' albums lists in various middle of the road music media across the world every year… we all know it's amazing and no amount of gushing on my part will make that any more true. So then I realised that the whole 'favourite album' conundrum could run in several directions (don't let it ever be said [...]
