A couple of bands from my old home of Athens, Georgia have been on repeat on A Free Man's iPod this week and I'd like to kick things off with them. First is Dead Confederate , a five piece that may be single-handedly redefining the sound of 'Southern Rock' as The Drive-by Truckers did before them. These guys are making dense, guitar driven music that owes more to Kurt Cobain than to Duane Allmann. Dead Confederate released their debut LP, "Wrecking Ball", this week. Check it out on . Thanks to News from Space [...]

For those of you that have not been to a live show with me, I have been known to let out a loud scream. It's an unintentional mix between Ric Flair at SummerSlam and Grace Jones reaching orgasm and usually occurs during a rather intense jam. Songs that have led to his outburst have included The Drive-By Truckers' "Where The Devil Don't Say," half of The Black Keys catalog, and any time The Dead kicked out "Scarlet Fire." Rarely does an entire album illicit that reaction, let alone from a band I've never heard of and on the [...]
August was a rich month for new music for me. I found some new favorites that have been playing on repeat. * J. Tillman - Steel on Steel * The Maldives - any song i could get my paws on, as well as their album * The Moondoggies - Don't be a Stranger * The Builders and the Butchers - The Builders and the Butchers * David Bazan - Live from Sasquatch 2008 * The National [...]

The Moondoggies - Changing The nicest surprise about stumbling on to The Moondoggies' MySpace is that the three tracks they streaming there all sound so different - one is a slamming rock track with three-part harmonies and a Rhodes organ, another a traditional-sounding folk song, and the last a bar brawlin' alt-country number. If you'd like to hear more from the Seattle quartet, their debut album Don't Be A Stranger was released last week on Hardly Art. Buy MySpace [...]
This week (or last week as the case may be) Drake takes a deep look at Light In The Attic 's stellar reissue of Rodriguez 's Cold Fact, fawns over Swedish pop-star Lykke Li , and tries to be fair and balanced about Jaguar Love . -ed. Drake's Take: New Releases 08.19.08 It's a deep week for releases, topped by the latest Swedish pop star to grace our shores, Lykke Li , and the debut of Jaguar Love (The Blood [...]

Last week was a monster week and thus, I'm now a week behind. I'm intrigued by this Moondoggies band. Or should I say Band? Anybody heard the whole record? Records Released on 8/19/08: Records I've Heard: GZA/Genius : Pro Tools (Babygrande) – There are some Wu-Tang Clan-esque tunes. He's still a strong lyricist and there are a few standouts, but I wish there were a few more jams. Jaguar Love : [...]
There are certain bands that certain people recommend to you in a way that can only be described as eagerly anticipatory. I find myself guilty (most of the time) for becoming extremely excited about things and conveying that inward joy in a handful of fine words and phrases. Stemming from the melting pot of music, more commonly associated with being the emerald gem of the Pacific Northwest - Seattle - my confident Sarah Q. has turned me onto a nice new act. They're the culmination of an interesting recipe, handfuls of a regional rock sound scattered across [...]
Saturday, August 23, 2008 Innumerable apologies for the my absence last week. These blazing days of summer get wanderlust burning like a dwarf star and I'm prone to meander. Last week I ventured to Southern Oregon for a trifecta of dirty hippies, 109 degree heat, and the veritable orgy of Shakespearean plays. Thus, you were deprived of my brainless caterwauling, and instead blessed with Lee Scratch Perry's brainless caterwauling. The level of sense made couldn't have been that different. Now though, I've returned from abroad, and I'm ready again to regurgitate a [...]
It's a deep week for releases, topped by the latest Swedish pop star to grace our shores, Lykke Li, and the debut of Jaguar Love (The Blood Brothers rise again). Elsewhere there are new releases from Stereolab, Delta Spirit (an early look,) Ra Ra Riot, Juliana Hatfield, The Stills, Jennifer O'Connor, Don Caballero, Uh Huh Her, Jeff Hanson, David Byrne, Human Highway and the great reissue of the 1970 cult classic from the enigmatic Rodriguez. Playlist: New Releases 08.19.08 Lykke [...]

As you can see with this week's Graboid, there are a lot of great releases out there to spend your hard-earned cash on. Seriously, I don't even know where to start with this list. A few releases that I can definitely recommend include Ra Ra Riot's The Rhumb (really dig this one - so happy for these guys), Jaguar Love's Take Me To The Sea, Lykke Li's Youth Novels (finally gets its US release) and Stereolab's Chemical Chords. I really had high hopes for The Stills' third album, Oceans Will Rise - thinking they would make [...]
This week sees a new full-length debut from Moondoggies as well as new singles from Bikini Kill and Huggy Bear. Oh yeah! read more

It's not just you. That record cover does look kinda trippy. Don't Be A Stranger , the debut LP of local tavern players the Moondoggies , arrives this Tuesday from Sub Pop offshoot Hardly Art (also home to Seattle's The Duchess and the Duke ). That they've arisen from the humble roots of Seattle's more dimly-lit side is not a jab but simply a statement of truth, and their music reflects that weathered and time worn aesthetic keenly. One listen identifies them philosophically as adventurous Youngists, melding blues, folk, and country into [...]

What should we say about something that sounds so like the past that it almost seems out of place in the modern day? The Moondoggies got me thinking such a thing with their Band meets Grateful Dead sound on their debut record for the feisty little label Hardly Art (The Duchess and The Duke, Le Loup). The record is pleasant enough (ie my wife didn't ask me to change it `til the guitar jam halfway through track 3), but it really does conjure up images of Woodstock, the 60's, and little pink houses.
