The Morning Pages sound is an intense-yet-rockous mix of honky-tonk, ragtime, country, soul and rock which makes it a bit surprising that they call Brooklyn, NY, home. Band members Grant Maxwell (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Kevin Drost (lead guitar), Matt Stoulil (bass guitar), Ben Arons (drums/harmony vocals) and Jared Samuel (keys/harmony vocals) has a sense of nostalgia, having taken a total of two days to create most of the material on their new album, The Company You Keep, and then recording live to analog tape to capture the spirit of the moment. Judging by the list of influences on their MySpace [...]

TV Notes: Heroes - What fantastic episode we were treated to this week! Major advancements in the plot were made, exciting hostage swappings, a "death" and re-birth of a major character, it was almost too much to take in! Unfortunately we have only two episodes left until the winter hiatus, and of course with the writers on strike who knows how long we will have to wait for new episodes. I'm

A New York band that plays blues heavy roots music with a country feel? Yup, The Morning Pages name The Band, Gram Parsons, Delaney & Bonnie, and Leon Russell as their musical heroes. Back in the old days records were made fast and cheap, and they still sounded great. In a two days they laid down five tracks for their EP The Company You Keep . They uses analog tape to create a rich and warm sound. If it sounds that good on CD, a vinyl release should be in order. [...]

I think the real idea behind these sessions finally came to fruition. We were hoping for organic sessions where each band can visit Shirk's studio in Chicago and play whatever inspires them: Old songs. New songs. Skynyrd songs. Whatever. Even for The Morning Pages , it took an hour of playing, a few beers, and some encouragement from both Shirk and myself to settle into their groove. Early on I overheard the guys talking about which 4 songs they would play. While we would surely be thankful for those 4 tracks, there are no really [...]

The Morning Pages , an alt-country outfit on Zealous Records , released their EP, The Company You Keep, this week. Much like their label-mates The Basement , this EP should also make its way into your collection. The EP is a nice toe-tapping collection of Alt-Country with influences firmly planted in the 70's. On the Zealous Records page, The Brooklyn five-piece lists Leon Russell, Gram Parsons and The Band as influences. Couldn't have said it any better myself. "We have no problem with the bands that have dominated New York for the [...]
