I'm in the music business, albeit casually and without compensation, but I've waded into the discussion/debates/disagreemen ts about what it means to be a musician in Canada, a fan of Canadian music, and a consumer just by the very act being here. While there's been lots of fodder for talk about the weakness or strength of the support systems Canada has in place for the arts and culture in the past month or so, there's been a celebration of arts and culture taking place that worth noting: Arts & Crafts is celebrating its tenth anniversary [...]

Another North by Northeast music festival is in the books, and with it, the bustling metropolis of Toronto is a little more quieter. Between June 15th and June 19th, an estimated 650 artists representing any and every genre you can think of played well into the Toronto night at close to 50 downtown venues. Streets where a great deal of bars are clumped together, like Queen West, the festival headquarters at the Hyatt Regency hotel on King, as well as the public square at the [...]

by teepoo On May 24th The Most Serene Republic dropped Pre Serene: Thee Oneironauts collection of 8 new songs. Home of the Rebels comes off the album. It begins with rainfall and Adrian Jewett's wounded sounding vocals. It moves into something a bit more light hearted after the middle when the guitar turnings into a strum as Adrian declares "Take me home, home of the rebels." When a song begins with a rain shower, you know it's going to be sad. But what happens when the rain never stops? It's not unheard of for a song to feature rain sound effects, but The Most Serene Republic keep it up for four minutes on "Home of the Rebels". The song, which shares its name with MSR's personal record label, features some gentle acoustic strumming over Adrian Jewett's unsteady, wounded vocals and all that rain. Along with seven other tracks, it will appear on Pre Serene: Thee Oneironauts , which arrives [...]
Thee Oneironauts (from the Greek “oneiros” – meaning “to dream”) is a musical pre-quel to the band that now claims its fame as The Most Serene Republic. Written in 2003, when most of them were about 18, the album is filled not with the tales of angst and teen woes that one might expect, but of songs that tell the stories of good lives lived in nice homes in the Toronto 'burbs.

To start my year of concerts off on the right foot, i had the great opportunity to go see The Most Serene Republic and Broken Social Scene play a show at the London Music Hall on January 16th. I know that that's a long time ago and that i've put this off for a while, but let me just say i've been clamping down on my school work, and i have started to prioritize properly as a part of my new years resolution. So not only did i get to see the show, but i also had the chance to [...]

Photograph by Danielle St. Laurent January 16, 2011 - Making up for their previous cancellation due to Snowmaggedon 2010, Broken Social Scene’s first concert in London, Ontario was a rousing success. Along for the ride was the Most Serene Republic, who I last saw shortly after the release of their second album, Population . With so many members, their last performance could best be described as chaotic, so I was hoping they would manage to be a little more ordered this night. The band parted ways with vocalist Emma Ditchburn early last year, so I was [...]
