Cover Art by grafista I hope you enjoyed our little duets one year anniversary mixtape as much as we enjoyed sharing it with you... but now it's time to get back to the business of our presentation of the Essentials mixtapes entered into our Society contest , to keep the new year going, proper. Next up, in no particular order, is grafista and his wonderful entry Don't Fear The Music . After listening a shit load of times, stuck on mad repeat, I [...]

This list, created for this new contest for the "Verge Music Awards" from XM reads like a wonderfully long playlist for the perfect CBC podcast (the competition is only for Canadian musicians, duh). And while seeing Feist in the same running as Crystal Castles , Tokyo Police Club and Alexisonfire is sort of ridiculous, there are so many great acts to choose from (check The Most Serene Republic getting a nod as well), we don't know where to begin. Cast your vote . (mp3) [...]

Bullz-Eye : I wrote a few concert reviews. One for the Death Cab for Cutie show at McCarren Park Pool , and the other for The Cure at Radio City Music Hall . Popdose : I review the interesting new albums from Sigur Ros and My Morning Jacket , the very good new Wolf Parade album, At Mt. Zoomer , and the meh Wooden Shjips LP . The Most Serene Republic: "In Places, Empty Spaces" (download)

The quarters are here. Portugal has bit the grimier side of a German's bung hole but there are three more quarter-final fixtures to be played. So in the spirit of absolute bone-breaking uselessness, us three Pirates sat down and thought about the shittiest 11 players we've seen so far in the group phase. I mean seriously, who really cares that Wesley Sneijder is looking like best damn midfielder in the world at the moment for the Netherlands, it's better to think about the bloody bastards who wasted our precious hours of sleep by being complete bungling idiots with a ball. [...]

Sunday Night Sunday Night, 30 th March – The Most Serene Republic – Multiplication Desks . Yep this is a mess. It's happened gradually. I didn't see it coming but I knew it could always happen. A second thought, it's not as much as a mess as initially imagined. I must be careful from now on. It's easy to exaggerate things I've learned. Sunday Night, 6 th April – Casiotone For [...]

My obsession with Canadian label Arts & Crafts continues to build! From Milton, Canada comes the electro-lounge collective The Most Serene Republic with their debut Population . I wasn't thoroughly impressed with the effort as a whole, but TMSR exudes a wonderfully cheerful and enchanting vibe. Imagine Zero 7 with a little more zip (sometimes too much zip at times). TMSR succeeds best when they sound the least 'disciplined'-that is to say, their best tracks seem more like they were shot from the hip than carefully planned. Nevertheless, that doesn't mean that their timing isn't anything short of precise [...]

Holy crap! It's a jam packed Wednesday for local shows. Here in Baltimore, Georgie James, The Courtesy Line, and Gary B and the Notions play the Ottobar and don't miss Stars at Sonar. In DC, The Cribs, Ra Ra Riot, and Jeffrey Lewis & The Jitters play the Black Cat , Holy Fuck, A Place To Bury Strangers, and Sons & Daughters play the Rock and Roll Hotel , and The Most Serene Republic, Miracle Fortress, and Liam Finn play DC9 . Finally in Philly, Tilly and The Wall, Capgun Coup., [...]

Though, if you do get a little bored then please feel free to send some feedback or new ideas my way. I'd really love to hear from you guys as to what you like and/or hate about the site. (pics from Bowery Ballroom, 10/16/2007) I just noticed one of my favorite bands from this past CMJ, The Most Serene Republic, is playing two shows this week in the city. Frontman / Trombonist Adrian Jewett and company played an extremely fun set at Brooklyn Vegan's Bowery CMJ Showcase in October. CMJ fell right after the release of their most recent LP, Population , an album full of jazzy / proggy / poppy goodness. Try listening to the opening track "Humble Peasants" and not digging this band. Do it [...]

As each year I become more and more immersed in this hobby of mine, seeking out music far and wide, it becomes an increasingly daunting task to narrow down the finest of the fine, especially when it comes to songs. It's very difficult to write an entire album of amazing songs (and therefore easier to rank), but I believe that every musician has at least one incredible song in them. Therefore, there are literally hundreds of songs I've heard this year that I've given the 4-star treatment to, yet hardly any that I've awarded the coveted 5-star rating. Faced with [...]
Ryan Lenssen nearly had his hands cut off, made his bandmates re-record the same album three times over, and says that their latest album wouldn't have been possible without the help of Ayn Rand.

1. The Most Serene Republic - Jazz Ordinaire - I'm not quite to the point of obsession, but I'm also not sure if I can get enough of this band. I'm light as a feather. [from Phages | buy ] 2. The Cinematic Orchestra - To Build a Home (Grey Reverend Version) - It's been awhile since I wrote about this, but I just stumbled upon this upcoming expanded single with a beautiful acoustic arrangement of this beautiful [...]
