If you aren't already, it's time to follow The Mountain Goats' John Darnielle on Tumblr — his blog is as witty and entertaining as one might expect, and he updates it fairly frequently. In particular, it was interesting to see him recently post a photo of a very young version of himself at a Nick Cave show. It turns out he's quite the Cave fan, and that seeing The Bad Seeds play on the tour in question was quite the formative experience on both Darnielle himself and on [...]

Massively prolific folk-rock outfit, The Mountain Goats are set to re-release 2002 LP All Hail West Texas . The record, originally released on Emperor Jones, will see a vinyl reissue via Merge on 23 July. It's most notable as being John Darnielle's last lo-fi "solo" record of sorts before he expanded both his line-up and sound for follow-up Tallahassee . Meanwhile, frontman Darnielle recently offered up the perfect retort to post- Daft Punk new album naysayers: "So I [...]
The Mountain Goats will reissue All Hail West Texas on CD, LP and digital in the US on July 23 and in Europe on August 6. Read a very cool piece about the...

The last of the "all-home-recordings albums" by the Mountain Goats and the only one about which that claim is true, All Hail West Texas was originally released as a free-standing compact disc on the late, lamented Emperor Jones. That was about a decade ago. The songs were originally transferred from the cassettes onto which they were recorded to 1/4" reels at Tiny Telephone by Alex Newport, who also played in Fudge Tunnel. John got really excited when he realized his tapes were being EQ'd by the guy from Fudge Tunnel. Remastered from those reels, along with 7 [...]

John Darnielle a.k.a. The Mountain Goats will reissue his end-of-an-era album All Hail West Texas on July 23rd via Merge Records. As legend and a press release tell us, it's the final album on which Darnielle used a condenser mic in his Panasonic boombox to record his early material. Originally released in 2002, All Hail West Texas features "fourteen songs about seven people, two houses, a motorcycle, and a locked treatment facility for adolescent boys." The original 14 songs will be remastered, and the reissue will feature seven previously unreleased tracks from cassettes recorded [...]

In an attempt to save you (not to mention ourselves) from the general Monday-morning awfulness that tends to follow a lovely spring weekend, Flavorwire has compiled a playlist of indie/rock/generally guitar-based songs that are genuinely funny. These are 20 of the flat-out wittiest and most amusing songs we know - and we guarantee that at least one of them will make you chuckle. (Note: we're discounting actual comedy songs here, so no Lonely Island/Flight of the Conchords/etc.) Keep the hilarity going by adding to our list in the comments. [...]

The creator of Elka the inquisitive cat, movie buff, record connoisseur and all-round good guy Emmet O'Brien is the next egg to fry beneath the scathing record store day interview spotlight... When not writing scripts, making movies, envisioning children's books (check out The Moon Fox ), there's a good chance Emmet O'Brien is out buying records, browsing through the undusted shelves in search of a good pun - - or at the very least he's talking music with whoever's close enough to listen. I check [...]

The Mountain Goats in Chicago in 2012 ( more by Sara Pieper ) The Mountain Goats 's 2012 album, Transcendental Youth is not too far in their rear view mirror, and they'll be continuing to support it in 2013 with the "Tuttlingen Warriors Tour." For it, John Darnielle and fellow Mountain Goat Peter Hughes will be playing a duo, somewhat like what Darnielle and Jon Wurster did at Carnegie Hall in January , and like they used to do [...]

For much of their early existence, The Mountain Goats existed as a two-man project featuring John Darnielle and Peter Hughes. In 2007, Superchunk's Jon Wurster was added to the fold and, well, the rest is history. However, recently The Mountain Goats were invited to perform a show in Poland, but due to conflicts with Wurster's schedule, Darnielle and Hughes were forced to perform a duo set for the first time "since 2006, possibly 2007." Afterward, Darnielle was inspired to experiment with a duo arrangement during the Transcendental Youth tour, and again for a [...]

The first time since 2007 (that's 6 years ago, count 'em—6!), John Darnielle has announced that he will go on the road with the Mountain Goats again, this time as a duo with Peter Hughes. The tour, which will be appropriately named TUTTLINGEN WARRIORS TOUR 2013, stemming from an inside joke between the pair, begins in D.C. and ends in Newport, RI at the Newport Folk Festival. Darnielle, in typical Darnielle fashion, has posted a long diatribe on his site with the important details ...
