Swedish pop singer/songwriter Jens Lekman is playing at Union Transfer tonight. His third full-length album I Know What Love Isn't, which dropped in September, surprised fans by taking a huge step away from the characteristically romantic Lekman on older records. I Know What Love Isn't may just define the term "break-up album," Lekman's sad but ... Continue reading
Transcendental Youth is the first album by John Darnielle's longtime band, the Mountain Goats , that has truly stood out to me. I recognize Darnielle's genius as a songwriter, someone who has a lot to say about uncomfortable subjects. Bleak stories dominate Transcendental Youth as well but much of the album's music has an uplifting quality about it. Maybe it's the horn section that makes a song like Cry for Judas sound like a Van Morrison tune? Elsewhere, Darnielle slows the tempo on songs, like Until I [...]

The latest effort from the Mountain Goats takes an ambitious approach. It's always amusing to see music videos that utilize actors and put together a narrative, but this coming-of-age story evokes some particularly heavy themes. It's hard to decide if this is good or just trying too hard, as it's overt and overwhelming, but either way it gives you something to think about and makes for an interesting watch. California folk rock band The Mountain Goats takes listeners on a trip through the minds of defiant adolescents in their video for "Cry For Judas," from their latest album, Transcendental Youth . The group boldly proclaims, "We are the ones who don't slow down, and there's nobody there to catch us when we fall." The video shows powerful imagery of young adults choosing to rebel against societal taboos surrounding issues like abortion and religion. Watch the video below. The Mountain Goats have dropped a gem of a new video to support their latest album, Transcendental Youth . The poppy "Cry for Judas" traverses through a series of Andersonian visuals that draw smiles (mice mazes!), gasps (singing nose bleeds!), and awkward tears (love and family!). There's a great juxtaposition of classic and modern American imagery that clashes without any bells and whistles, punches or kicks. Fans should also have fun picking out the various band members interspersed throughout. Start looking by streaming below. Transcendental Youth is [...]

Here's the Mountain Goats' new video for "Cry For Judas," an emotional, striking tour through youthful curiosity, sin and pain. Also, the star of it is arguably a mouse running through a maze. Needless to say, there's a lot to process here. Watch it below. Read More...

What a week we have in store! Though there are loads of great bands in town, it's Lord Huron we're most excited to see. With their debut full-length finally hitting shelves this week, they're is visiting our fine city to celebrate with shows in Brooklyn and Manhattan. If you can't make it to one of their shows, try and catch Perfume Genius with Dusted on Tuesday or The Mountain Goats with Matthew E. White at Music Hall of Williamsburg on either Saturday or Sunday. Enjoy this beautiful week [...]

Frank Yang I'm old enough to have lived through The Afghan Whigs in their heyday, but I still missed them completely. Okay, not completely - I had a copy of Gentlemen on cassette because, well, Spin and such told me that I should - but it never really spoke to high school me. In 1993, I was all R.E.M. and Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead, at the artier end of the guitar rock spectrum, and the Whigs' inherent seediness, the blackness of their soul, didn't resonate; it probably scared [...]

On Tuesday October 9, Richmond native Matthew E. White will play a hometown celebration opening for The Mountain Goats at the National. White's "Big Inner" was a huge hit and hailed by NPR All Songs Considered, Rolling Stone and Pitchfork (8.1 review!) White's always been awesome to see along with Fight the Big Bull. From what I've heard about his solo show, it's one not to be missed. Plus, the Mountain Goats put on one of the best shows I have ever seen. Good deal for your money right here.

John Darnielle is a bastion of erudition; a songwriter with more stories to tell than there are papyral pages to the Bible. He's a rare talent – Einsteinian of mind, and without contemporary. Needless to say, therefore, it'd be quite nice to have a few more of his kind setting the particles about us to a gentle quiver. Yet the great heights scaled by the Mountain Goats may then seem comparative molehills in place of imposing mounts. The miscreant-scrutinising We Shall All Be Healed remains their zenith from the lowly perch upon which I sit, although [...]
