January is normally a very slow time for the music industry, but so far 2007 has been an exception to that rule. With all the hoopla surrounding the new Arcade Fire, and a couple of really good shows here early in the year the slow trend appears to have been bucked for the time being. This week is a bit of an odd week, there are some terrific shows on certain days and absolutely nothing on other days. Here's my picks for the week!!! Monday: I was looking through several concert calendars and nothing [...]

Brooklyn, NY It's been a while since I've given some love to Brooklyn, so I'll get back in to it with The Muggabears . Teenage Cop is the name of their EP and you should pick it up if you dig bands like Pavement. "I'm Coming True" The Muggabears on MySpace

The Muggabears live at The Annex . Listen: "I'm Coming True" Visit The Muggabears on MySpace . More pictures from this show HERE . (ps - congratulations Kevin!)

This is it...the last cd-length gand of songs for you to download, burn, and groove to. Make a disc of these, give it to a friend as a holiday gift, and include a note that says, "Here, now you are as hip as me and my nerdy blog-reading friends! Happy Holidays"! Or not. As you probably know by now, I have this special affinity for mid-nineties noise rock and slacker rock: Sonic Youth, Pavement, Chavez, Eric's Trip, and the list goes on. If you're a band and you play it loose and loud, you'll get a few spins from me. In come The Muggabears, a three piece from NYC via Texas who incorporate ideas from some of the past's greatest noise merchants. Singer/guitarist Travis Johnson has a bit of Malkmus in his voice and a good deal of Sonic Youth in his six string. This magnificent noise is [...]

View original photo Muppets and Care Bears getting together to cover Pavement. Right? That's what this must be. (Sorry kids). Ok the Pavement sound is there and it's strong, but the grooves are a lot tougher than good old Malkie's crew ever really cared to sink it in. This band really is fierce! Tough! Strong! Argh! Roar! And they've self-released the 3-song Teenage Cop ep, which you can order right here . The Muggabears play tonight at Union Hall in Park Slope, Brooklyn [...]
mp3: I'm Coming True mp3: Sister Now website: http://www.themuggabears.com I've only listened to this lot a couple of times, but I kinda like it. Enough to post here anyway. I was drawn in by their press release, which truth be told, is pretty rare. See if it works for you: "The Muggabears are a NYC-by-way-of-Texas trio, and while the Big Apple association may immediately raise a few red flags among the more cynical, The Muggabears have a [...]
December is always a bit of a hectic month. Lots of Christmas shopping, parties, and the like, plus the year end specials, lists, New Year's parties. One year I drank every day of December because there was just too much going on. I don't think I'm going to match that this year but it's going to be close. There are some damn fine shows in December as well so that should clot the schedule even further. Here's what I'm looking forward to so far. What are you looking forward to? Free Shows (err show, what's up where's all [...]
Monday: My Brightest Diamond is returning once again to New York to play a show at Northsix tonight. In case you've missed me raving about Shara in the past know that I am in love with this girl, her band, and her music and if you see her live I believe you will falll in love too. Two bands are getting the show rolling for her, Pedestrian and papercranes, starting at 8pm for the nominal fee of $12. My Brightest Diamond - "Something of An End" Tuesday: Today [...]

So with the release of the CMJ Schedule yesterday I've begun planning for my first forray to the marathon. It's going to be a crazy, jam packed week, with tons of tough decisions that will have to be made. It could also become a lot more crazy with events that haven't been announced so I'll try to keep you up to date as much as I can as the days near closer. If you feel like stalking me during the week you can try following the schedule I'll be posting here over the next few days. 2:00pm - [...]
I'm zero for three this week, I missed A Sunny Day In Glasgow on Sunday, Citizens Here and Abroad on Monday, and The Muggabears on Tuesday. Additionally, I was hoping to write this post two days ago and give a little shout out to the Earfarm/Beg Yr Pardon show but became entirely too busy, eventually missing the show altogether. Ugh. Anyway, happy belated birthday to Earfarm! I've been meaning to check out The Muggabears for a little while now, their [...]
This week there are a ton of fantastic shows hitting town. Sure, a whole bunch of them are sold out; including the final shows at CBGB's, but there's more than that to go see. Here's my picks for the week... Monday: This evening we all get the chance to check out a band that has released on of my favorite albums of 2006! Islands really hit the scene running this year picking up right where Unicorns left off. Tonight they hit Bowery Ballroom at 8pm, tomorrow their at Northsix. Tickets for this show are [...]
I submit to you two bands for your listening pleasure. Both of which I have come in contact with via the miracle of Myspace. Both of which are making some rad music. The Muggabears The Muggabears are from Brooklyn and sound a lot like Pavement. I love bands that sound like Pavement. Not surprised that Pavement is the first band listed in the influences section of their Myspace , where you can listen to songs from their new EP, Teenage Cop . The [...]

I wasn't feeling very well today so couldn't spend the time I wanted to on this post. I wish I had more time to research and write about these bands/artists. This is the kind of indie music that needs the exposure and is well worth a listen. Check them out, spread the word, and buy their music. Phelan Sheppard Harps Old Master Leaf Label (Sept. 2006) mp3 Weaving Song O, Little Stars Rocket Girl (2002) [...]

The Stephen King side of mine... (Married to the moon) You're still watching TV in the night. The jittering screen in front of you is sucking your brain out as suddenly your girlfriend starts to struggel her blanket away. She kicks you with her leg and begins to roll from the one side of the bed to the other. A heartbraecking snivel leaves her mouth and she starts to scream for help. You try to wake her up but it doesn't work out. Her whining is getting worser but there is nothing to do that could [...]

Let's get the name thing out of the way first, shall we? The Muggabears . "Bouncing here and there and everywhere...high adventure that's beyond compare, we are the Muggabears". I can't help it. Seriously, I'm sorry, but I often get this weird association disorder that happens with band names. Sometimes I'll put off listening to a band just because of it. Well, yeah, that didn't happen here...for very long. Yes, The Muggabears made me think of the theme song for the Gummi Bears for some reason. Made me think [...]
