Date Monday, Sept. 19th Location Mohawk Doors 900p Tickets $12 @ the Door It's slightly unfortunate that this show follows the hangover from ACL, as Two Gallants are definitely a great live act, worthy of a measley $12. But, on the plus side, if you're looking for some Americana-influenced post-rock, then you might be able to witness a great act [...]
"Who's Bon Iver?" someone shouted during Two Gallants' set. It was the beginning of vague references throughout the night to Justin Vernon's sold-out show at the Orpheum Theater, which may have contributed to the surprisingly sparse attendance at First Avenue's stellar lineup: Fruit Bats , Vetiver , and Two Gallants . Oakland quartet The Mumlers opened, warming up the audience with old-school Motown, jazz standards ("Don't Throw Me Away" sounded suspiciously like "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"), and almost jungle rhythmic arrangements. "Thank you for being at this [...]
To those who watched tickets for Two Gallants ' shows at Bottom of the Hill last spring sell out like they were Sigur Rós concerts, don't be bummed. The duo announced two new shows at The Independent, September 23-24 ( tickets on sale now ) as part of a North American tour. Neither San Francisco show is sold out yet, and while the entire tour includes The Mumlers , the September 24 show does not currently have a supporting act listed. We'll publish details for the [...]
Tweet This is thee Will Sprott of San Jose's The Mumlers . Solo, but with many special guests including back-up vocals, cabasa (that African percussion thingy with loops of steel ball chain wrapped around a wide cylinder) and a guy just swaying with a beer. To a small, dedicated audience, he brought the goods: soulful guitar work, great songwriting and humor. He brings The Mumlers this Friday, April 15 to Cal's Sproul Plaza at noon, and also SF MOMA on Friday, May 20th. [...]
Happy New Year to all! I know it's very belated and the blog sort of disappeared for the past month. This isn't the first time that has happened and it might not be in the last, being that I'm going to Thailand for a month in mid-March. I'll be honest and say the chances of this blog having daily updates from this point on are sort of slim. Let's just say that more pressing tasks in my life have been demanding a lot more of my time recently. Ultimately, I've gotta pay the bills and keep focusing on my education [...]

ED NOTE: Re-posting an old one, back from 2009. In my run up to 2010's incredible year of music, I dig up an earlier post of superlative 2009 tracks. What's that you say? Lame and campy? There aren't many suitable locales for a music festival in San Francisco, but Another Planet Entertainment has them covered pretty well. APE runs the shaky but largely successful Outside Lands in the very green and very beautiful Golden Gate Park (also home to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass ) every year, and along with Noise Pop has made use out of an otherwise useless, tiny, artificial island in the Bay. Treasure Island sits next to the Bay Bridge between Oakland and San Francisco. It was built out of landfill in the 1930s specifically to celebrate the completion [...]

In the spirit of the upcoming Treasure Island Music Festival October 16-17, The Bay Bridged had a chat with Will Sprott, frontman of The Mumlers . The San Jose-based band is one of the festival's handful of local acts, and will open the festival Sunday. Stay tuned for more interviews from this year's artists leading up to the festival. There was something about The Band that made its dissolution in 1976 a melancholy moment. I loved the twangy, country blues-based, Cajun-infused music. It was a traveling circus. When the Band disbanded it became hard to find music with the same mixture of country, folk, rock, jazz and Americana. One of my favorite musicians who was able to continue the sound (or who may have helped create it) is Leon Russell . The man has transcended genres. He has had a stellar solo career and has played with [...]
Thanks to Anna for pointing out this little known festival in San Jose! The crowd was really small but San Jose's The Mumlers wowed 'em with a sweet Memphis soul sound. What is Yo La Tengo doing here? Excellent versions of "Autumn Sweater" and part of "Little Eyes". Darondo killed it with a Screamin' Jay Hawkins meets Al Green smash. Don't miss him at Stern Grove on August 15th. Gimme [...]
