Tweet When a friend of mine, who was as ecstatic about music as me back in the day, recently pointed out that most new music was in fact old music dressed up in new clothes I couldn't but agree. It's either riding on the coattails of an electro prancer from the 802s or else shrouded in the mysterious allure of a dark clothed being from a little bit more recently. The net effect is toe tapping, yet altogether too familiar to create [...]

Hardly makes sense that a most charming pairing like Raissa Khan-Panni and Mark Horwood have surfaced so rarely in critical tomes. For the Mummers are deserving of more than a half-lit underground berth, their music is the stuff of universal appeal. Not that that means it is in any way diluted to attract the masses. Take a listen to their latest EP 'Milk Hollow Road' and hear intelligent pop music with huge orchestral flourishes combined with Khan-Panni's rich vocals. And one only has to see what the duo did with the Black Keys otherwise tuneless 'Everlasting Light' to recognise [...]

After seeing this pop up on the interwebs (i.e. Some Kind of Awesome , I Guess I'm Floating , Listen Before You Buy ,) I have finally gotten around to posting the amazing remix of The Black Keys ' single "Everlasting Light" by The Mummers . What was originally a straightforward bluesy, garage rock jam has now been transformed into an orchestral pop piece that for some reason reminds me of the circus. This post is a "QuickPick". QuickPicks are my attempt at getting all of the music that's sent to me that I like (or just music I like but have no words for because it's so awesome), out into the dubya dots. Any time I get sent music that I like I "star" it in Gmail and then go back and listen to it a day later. If it's still as good as it was a day before then it goes up on the site, but sometimes I get backlogged and can't get through writing [...]

Sitting here fairly bored and perusing the interwebs for lack of something better to do. I just hit one of my favorite blogs, I Guess I'm Floating , and I'm in full agreement with Connor that this remix of The Black Keys' track, "Everlasting Light" is the cat's ass. I love this track in general. This whole spin on it blossoms this out in a whole new light. Since we pretty much have a requirement as a Cleveland blog to represent all things Keys, we share this with you. Enjoy! [...]

I just stumbled upon this fantastic remix of The Black Keys' "Everlasting Light" by The Mummers , who've taken the song's straightforward rockin' nature and built a tower of orchestral pop over its foundation. It's one of the best remixes I've heard in a long, long time. [MP3] The Black Keys - Everlasting Light (The Mummers Remix) I challenge every single one of you to be unswayed by this track. It's absolutely impossible not to like. Like Homer Simpon's kalkalash . [...]
..is really not that far. But it’s far from what’s mainstream these days. Pop, rock, hip hop, folk and now also new wave are genres that dominate the charts right now. But some of the artists in this article are artists that most likely will be more exposed than they already are in the near [...]

The Mummers have announce details of a special one-off London live date in June.

M ojo, one of the only music magazines worth buying anymore has a good issue currently out now. What's great about Mojo is that always include a cd full of interesting covers. This issue is part 2 of their story on the Wall. I've included two tracks from the cd below. Be sure to pick up the issue. You won't be disappointed. 'Wonderland' is a whimsical ditty from experimental popsters The Mummers . It features horns, bells, and beautiful vocals from singer Raissa. Overall, it's an inspiring indie jaunt. Listen to 'Wonderland' below:

As the summertime folds in we get a couple of sublime indie acts visiting Brighton through September. Both are guaranteed to shine, with their excellent live shows and dedicated teen followers. As a footnote to our attendance to said gigs, can you please read our question at the bottom of this post... PASSION PIT This Massachusetts five-piece are well known to The Recommender having played our town before. Widely recognised as a pioneering band of the College indie sound that's flowed out [...]
Hip Hop is a genre we rarely post about here on The Recommender. Mainly because of all the genres we ramble on about it is the one we confess we have little expertise on. Don't get us wrong, compared to some genres, like Thrash Metal, we're veritable experts, so Hip Hop ain't that much of a stranger. We just like to know what we are talking about is all. Enjoy a couple of exciting Hipsters that deserve hopping (sorry!) onto todays Recommender post ... AZEALIA BANKS Americans do Hip [...]
"Wonderland" - the Mummers A waltzing, carnivalesque intro segues into some smooth, orchestral retro-pop that owes a bit to Burt Bacharach, a bit to Kurt Weill, and a bit to our century's relentless urge to mix and mash sounds into ear-catching concoctions. To me, "Wonderland" separates itself from a lot of the more disposable contrivances crowding the internet in our music-happy day and age via its rare combination of sweetness and sturdiness. The melodies are expansive and velvety, the arrangements unexpectedly thoughtful, even articulate. The bright-toned singer and multi-cultural multi-instrumentalist Raissa Khan-Panni, who [...]

This weekend I'm going to be checking out loads of acts taking part at one of the largest music festivals in the world: Glastonbury. The good news is that I won't have to worry about getting caught in the rain, paying for over-priced food and beverages, and lugging a tent and sleeping bag around for the weekend. Thanks to the BBC , I'll be able to watch highlights and full performances from the comfort of my own living room. Thank you very much, the BBC! The only downside is that I'm going to have to listen to [...]

Over a month ago, I was watching the first episode of the current series of Later...With Jools Holland , and my ears perked up at the sounds coming from Brighton-based band, The Mummers. Vocalist/songwriter, Raissa Khan-Panni, exuded playfulness with her melodica at her lips, as the miniature orchestra produced a ramshackle rhapsody behind her. Quirky, offbeat and magical are often overused terms for artists like this (I, myself, have probably overused them), and it becomes difficult not to make comparisons to female singer-songwriters like Kate Bush and Bjork, two artists who often make you feel like you fell down [...]
