Let's get the crap out of the way first, shall we. At its worst, this album is merely bland - a pastiche of work that Bjork did almost ten years ago. That, just occasionally, is the territory which The Mummers flirt with on Tell to Tale. That sounds horrible, but if you don't get into this album then that is what you will probably hear, I would have thought. Personally, though, I think it's just a bit brilliant. Nicole Atkins has already test-driven the drama queen off broadway on drugs in a dive bar aesthetic this [...]
The comparisons to Bjork may be inevitable as much for the lush production as Raissa Khan-Panni's faultlessly dispatched vocals. There is purity a here, Raissa sings without the hint of a struggle, those high notes are pitched as easily as the rest of us hum along to a great chorus. So her vocal talent is not in doubt but the best news of all is that she can pen great tunes too as 'March Of The
The Mummers "March of the Dawn" - There are some people who live their lives as if it were a story, and their obsession with their personal narrative more often than not gives them permission to behave selfishly, reinforces the very worst aspects of their character, and they gradually degrade into toxic narcissists. There are others who invest their life with the spirit of fiction, and that's what we have in "March of the Dawn": A woman embracing the possibility of romance, whimsy, and adventure rather than demanding drama or expecting another hum-drum day of [...]

Wow, it's been a crazy busy week! It really only feels like a couple of days since I was last posting a mixtape. I wasn't going to get all wrapped up in the Olympics, but I've been up until early morning every day watching whatever the latest gold-medal competition was, leaving me to face the busy work morning still sleepy. I've listened to each of these tracks once, maybe twice this week, so this mixtape is as new to me as it is to you. With such a busy week behind me now, I fully plan to take [...]

Raissa from The Mummers on Steve Lamacq Today saw the long-awaited Mummers mini-album arrive on my doorstep. I have been a longtime advocate of this wonderful Brighton-based collective. Indeed, they were one of the first bands I ever blogged for Rock Sellout. The album is entitled Tale To Tell (part one) and it's available now. All I can say is please buy it!! The video explains the making of the album and the track I have included is no longer available on Myspace so enjoy. As a [...]
The Mummers hail from Brighton and are composed of Raissa Khan-Panni (vocals), Mark Horwood (music) and Paul Sandrone (production). It may be a lazy comparison and - if they make it big - it's one that they will probably become overly familar with, but they do sound rather like Bjork. Lead singer Raissa has the same sort of idiosyncratic but impressive vocal style and she does sound worringly like her at times. Even down to the way she phases the pronounciation of certain ways. The music is much akin to Bjork's more whimisical and 'pop' work, [...]
