No doubt more than a fair few of you are already familiar with Heavy Metal In Baghdad , the superb documentary by Vice Films, which tracks the existence of Acrassicauda, Baghdad's only active metal band during, and in the immediate aftermath of, the invasion of Iraq and ousting of Saddam Hussein. If you're one of the poor souls who hasn't yet checked out this vital documentary, Vice are now showing the entire documentary in serialised format over on their website. We'll even save you the thirty [...]

Weatherbox announced the The Rattle Of The Afghan Guitar EP last week and are premiering a new song from it today. It's nice to see the band return to their studious rock roots with "Secret Muslim" , which reckons an off-kilter glimpse into the drug-addled mind of frontman Brian Warren in assured fashion. A Conversation with Deaf Muslim Filmmaker Sabina England about punk attitudes, Deaf identities, and Muslim treatment in post 9-11 America. Sabina England has quickly become a Do-it-Yourself l'enfant terrible of the art world. As a Deaf Muslim punk rocker turned cultural critic and filmmaker, she has created work based on mime comedies, 8-bit experimental video, and Indian wedding night rituals. Her provocative writing has explored sex taboos and the Islamic culture center planned near Ground Zero, while her protest videos have even criticized punk legend Jello Biafra's (Dead Kennedys) July concert in Israel. Combining the...
On Black Up , Shabazz Palaces take hip hop deep into the left field with odd beats and surreal effects. It's definitely an indulgent LP that requires a little bit of effort from the listener, but repeating these songs until they completely unfold is worth the wait. Part of me is sure this album is going to warrant a lot of comments like, " I don't usually listen to hip hop, but this is great!" But that shouldn't discourage people who listen to the genre more regularly to check it out. Though this album sounds like it [...]
Does this surprise anybody ? Last month, the Department of Homeland Security officially discontinued its Special Registration program, which "required thousands of Arab and Muslim men to register with the authorities, in an effort to uncover terror links and immigration violations," Sam Dolnick at The New York Times explains . The program was founded after 9/11 but only "11 of the more than 85,000 men who came forward in the first year were found to have ties to terrorism." Clearly ineffective at increasing security, the program did more for catching undocumented immigrants, [...]

While the songs point out differences between our cultures, the love a parent feels for a child isn't unique to any one people.
So last week, Christian pastors Terry Jones and Wayne Sapp of the Dove World Outreach Center burned the Quran, the Muslim holy book, in Florida. The result has been outrage, protests and condemnation in the Muslim world. In Afghanistan, protestors stormed the UN compound in Mazar-i-Sharif and killed at least 12 people, beheading 2. So far, the death toll is up to 20 people. This event and its aftermath is illustrative of the problems of conflicting religions in free societies. As such, it'll be interesting to see how this situation resolves itself. [...]
And another really good one from Jasiri X .... " With Rep. Peter King holding hearings on "Muslim Radicalization" , and American Muslims being screamed at and harassed while attending a fundraiser for battered women , can Muslims safely live and pray in the United States of America? Our new video "Wandering Strangers" raise questions about who's a terrorist, and why people seem to forget freedom of religion is a constitutional right. Wandering Strangers was produced by Kreid and directed by Paradise Gray ." [...]
فضيحة اموال العرب بين الدعارة والطرب والتبذير.... لكم الله يا شعب غزة etc etc etc. Ear To The East again.

The indie music world is a fickle, fickle place. One moment beard-rock is the flavor of choice, a second later bloggers are latching on to every electro-pop gem they can get their cyber-hands on. The chase for the next buzzband, the next remix, the next album leak can be exhausting. Since I never had the chance at crafting a year-end best albums list, I spent my time not ranking but contemplating, analyzing the inpenetrably vast number of lists already out there on the inter-webs. One thing rang clear, the indie blogosphere has a special affinity for ethereal, dreamy [...]
There's not much information on the people behind Ear To The East, but fingers crossed that it's some rich, internet-savvy Saudi playboys who love rap and joking around.
Christmas is arguably the only major religious holiday where non-Christians have developed yearly traditions. So whether you plan to spend the holiday with family, volunteering with an organization or, like us, at a Chinese restaurant with the Jewish homies, you'll be in good company. Face it, you could be getting barked at by the staff of the Maury Povich show, receiving a pet rat as a gift or being torn between which family to spend the day with. Cheers! Phew, busy today! Gwine to try to crank out a few posts on the quick here... I was listening to some old Muslims aka Soft Pack songs on the way to work and it struck me how they make light work of a song in a way few bands can; it all sounds effortless in their hands. The Soft Pack - Right and Wrong
In 2002, when zine writer Michael Muhammad Knight first self-published his novel "The Taqwacores", his intention was primarily in conveying his disillusionment in his adopted faith. Yet the postive feedback was overwhelming, and the story took on a life of its own. The novel introduces us to the fictional inhabitants of a Buffalo-based Muslim punk house as they live out lives that adhere to a less than traditional version of Islam. The book enjoyed proper distribution and publishing through Alternative Tentacles & Autonomedia, and it inspired countless Muslim youths across the country who found great resonance in the variety of personalities depicted in the book. The story of [...]
